Thanks for the response. I’ve been playing with a node a bit, but I’m in a low-lying area with a lot of trees and I don’t get much range. I’m curious to hear what experiences others have.
Plus there was a nice little earthquake this morning to remind me.

I've seen some discussion about using #meshtastic #LoRA devices for communications in emergencies. Anyone know if someone has successfully used them in the LA fires (or other non-test situations)?

Speaking as someone arguably in the middle of that speedrun, this is compounded by the technical slant to many (most?) Fediverse communities.
I strongly suspect that, on the median admin team, there is a lot more expertise in, e.g., running Postgres than in small-organization governance. And that carries over to the types of guides that are written up and general advice.

We do take donations, but cost and overhead for a nonprofit are considerable.
The quotes I’ve received for incorporating and setting up a nonprofit structure from lawyers who do this (i.e., not me) are in the ballpark of our yearly budget, and the bulk of the advice seems to be that it doesn’t make sense unless you’re big enough to have paid staff or are looking for grants.
We previously had a fiscal host, so donations were tax-exempt, but it folded. We’ll likely try to find a new one.
If you have contrary nonprofit experience, I’d love to hear about it; it may just be that our referral network is too high end or something!

💯 If you browse through the top N instances on fediDB, you’ll see that almost none of them have any formal structure.
We (SFBA) have done some exploration looking at whether it would make sense ti be a US 501(c)(3), and it really looks like the costs/overhead don’t make sense.
