I don't think it will ever be obvious enough that the dollar is unbacked. I know it's a statist argument, but it's somewhat true that it's backed by the US economy and their ability to collect taxes in the USD - that will always drive (fiat) demand for the USD, even if it's now partly backed by BTC. They just don't need to solve the entire debt problem in one go, just get it down a bit or change the trajectory. Ultimately this still involves inflation and more Bitcoin adoption, and maybe in the much longer term the dollar succumbs to Bitcoin.

I think that's a flavour of a very realistic scenario.
I don't think the US would go straight to fully backing the currency, and they probably wouldn't 100% confiscate either.
Much of bitcoin's value is that it's widely owned as emergent money, so it would be self defeating to take all of the ETFs. Better to impose some kind of limited "one time currency swap" at a nominal profit for ETF holders, plus give a future date so that self custodial holders get tempted to buy the ETF too and fall under closer control of the USG.
Then they just need to keep it at the treasury as one of the assets counter-balancing the national debt. They don't need to balance/remove all the debt, just enough to buy a few more years of credibility. They still have their future USD (now inflated) tax cash flows to set against the rest of the (not inflated) debt.

Main criticism of MicroStrategy DID thing is that their use case should be easily replicable by enterprise email providers like Google and Microsoft.
Strangely it doesn't seem to be a current feature of those providers, but it seems trivial for them to just add an icon with "this person is in your organisation" (or the inverse).
It's also odd that they didn't use the Web 5 stack, but designed their own "inefficient" (thanks @npub1t0n…jgqv for pointing this out) implementation.
I honestly really want to see some kind of user-controlled alternative to today's current digital ID schemes, but I think best case scenario is that Orange becomes a helpful failure case study.

I'm not a fan of Saylor's influence on Bitcoin, but to be fair to this product launch:
- Focuses on an actual end user application which I haven't seen much from the DID space before
- Can be adopted one organisation at a time, so they're not relying on wider spec agreement to get started
- MicroStrategy actually has a sales org and is motivated, which could make a difference to see more use in practice. Won't be the thing that sets the world ablaze with DID interest, but could be a useful case study.
I read your Nostr article (it's great, thanks!), but I think DIDs (linked to Bitcoin) must have some role in a future where we want to establish identities for people that cannot be revoked. All the current digital ID schemes being pushed have this as a major risk, and we've already seen governments like India fuck people over. Obviously Saylor doesn't care about THAT issue, but maybe some small progress on the MS use cases could still move things forward.

I've been a real fiat maxi the last few days.
Because of the UK's convoluted tax system I've needed to put extra money into a pension.
Sold some Bitcoin, transferred the cash into a pension (and the government tops it up by 25%), and bought MSTR.
I don't feel good about buying MSTR because I don't fully understand Saylor's financial engineering, but it's literally the only way to get Bitcoin price exposure in a UK pension. We're not allowed to buy US ETFs, and even when we get our own in ~May it won't be accessible to retail like me for "investor protection". Instead I have to buy some levered stock run by a guy who thinks Bitcoin is real estate.
Theoretically this is a very tax efficient thing to do, and it also gives me more cash flow (due to UK childcare funding) to buy more real Bitcoin. But it hurts adding all these extra trust layers. Right now I can't access the pension till I'm 57, but that can go up and the government can change all the tax advantages. All I can do is 🤞

Took an Uber in a Tesla Model 3. Driver absolutely hates it.
He's been forced to buy an electric car by Transport for London. His previous vehicle was > 8 yrs old (lol, buying new cars for the environment 🙃)

Not sure I've seen this analogy anywhere, but I've got a good explanation to friends of why it's so hard to copy or change Bitcoin:
Bitcoin is like how modern society thinks of 24hr time 🕰️ (@npub1dergggklka99wwrs92yz8wdjs952h2ux2ha2ed598ngwu9w7a6fsh9xzpc alludes to this in "Bitcoin is time"):
- We all agree on the protocal of 24 hours, minutes, seconds etc.
- International Atomic Time is the main reference point that can be independently verified.
- It's relatively easy to check whether other clocks are cheating because we all run our own time nodes (quartz or the sun, or even Bitcoin).
- To change this protocal or shift it in some way would be so massively difficult, that it just doesn't happen. It's only possible if the vast majority of people who control devices agree.
- Yes you can try and claim your own time standard as the real one, but really there is no second best.

On one hand it's just a small percent of articles that are biased, so wikifreedia maybe not be needed for the vast majority.
But there are still a lot of "facts" on Wikipedia as a helpful starting point, even on articles with a lot of bias. It may actually help the final result be a bit more balanced/holistic.
I'm not sure it works exactly the same, but have you seen Rationalwiki and Conservapedia? I think both start fresh with a very politically bias POV, and they're both garbage (although good that they exist).

Bitcoin bull markets are very important for decentralisation - so no need to virtue signal that you don't care about price or purchasing power:
- More distribution of ownership as OGs sell
- More incentive for new miner manufacturers
- More incentives for mining operations in areas and jurisdictions with more expensive energy
- More Bitcoin businesses and products, some of which are good and will survive
- Wealthier Bitcoiners who can support efforts to lobby & sue governments to create friendlier regulations
- Casual holders scared about how much wealth they now have getting their shit together and storing their sats properly
- More people being forced to engage with debates related to Bitcoin, and a % of those understanding and not being able to unsee the truth about money
- More money donated to developers, and previous donated sats being worth more - should mean more developers
- New constituencies with incentives to support friendlier attitudes to Bitcoin
- Random businesses accepting Bitcoin as a marketing stunt, but continuing support and helping improve merchant products

This is one of the main reasons I expect deflation to happen unless there's QE and low rates again here in the UK. Natural gas prices were the biggest system shock in 2022 driving the "cost of living crisis" and sending UK energy companies into bankruptcy. It literally went up 1000%.
But now we're heading towards historic lows - both a sign that production costs of goods will come down, but also partly shows that demand for energy is decreasing (although bigger driver seems to be a supply glut despite Ukraine war).

I've noticed a recent trend of disingenuous thinkboi FUD on SN in general, not just ecash or LN.
The super-purest position is clever too, since it comes with baked in responses like "oh you don't think self custody is important?".

what are these miners getting in exchange? what's incentivising them not to switch?
There are 2016 blocks every 2 weeks, surely income stability can't be a factor especially if you're a public miner and report quarterly earnings - even if you're a 1% hashrate pool that's about 262 blocks in a Q with reasonable certainty and even a chance of being lucky and getting more.

Regardless of the issue here (I agree with the stance) it's egregious that UK newspapers openly advertise that they campaign for anything.
You think they don't also do this for other political or financial positions?
