If you want to know more about #FediHood, check my recent detailed posts :)
In short, it is #Fediverse software that gives you a local timeline based on your city, and you can set the radius around it. The instance does not even know your exact position. It supports everything the fediverse allows and offers a Mastodon-like API.
Each post has a topic that you can mute. Moderators are promoted naturally in their area through good actions.

2026-08-09 19:08:53 GMT

#FediHood and #HolosSocial, two separate #Fediverse projects (that I maintain), can now send each other #E2EE DMs, fully over #ActivityPub.

The rework on #UntrackMe is almost over. When set as default, it will act as a proxy and strip any tracking parameters before delegating the action to another app.
If it detects a supported front end (for YouTube, X links etc.), it will automatically redirect you to the alternative front-end of your choice.
If it detects a shortened or hidden URL (like t.co, etc.), you will be warned with full details before proceeding.
Only on #FDroid: https://f-droid.org/packages/app.fedilab.nitterizeme/

Did you know that crash reports sent to #Fedilab through emails have been significantly reduced for the last few updates? Thank you for sending them, they are really useful and they have contributed to fixes in the repo.
Don't hesitate to contribute by enabling crash reports in Settings > Interface > Enable crash reports.

Something important to understand with #Fedilab and remote timelines, conversations and threads. This feature uses the public API of remote instances, that means there is no direct interaction between your account (token) and the remote instances when messages or accounts are displayed.
This is only when you decide to interact that the app will apply the appropriate actions in the background.
That's why it is impossible to apply your moderation rules (muted/blocked accounts remain visible).

The next release of #CastLab will support the #FCast protocol https://fcast.org/

#HolosDiscover 1.1.0 has been released.
The trending algorithm now uses time decay so recent content gets more weight. Older posts don't dominate the results anymore.
A privacy page has been added: https://discover.holos.social/privacy
There's also an API documentation page with interactive testing: https://discover.holos.social/api-docs
API keys are only needed for server-side apps (same IP for all requests). Mobile and desktop apps don't need one, rate limits are per user IP.

2026-02-25 21:15:33 GMT

We received several requests to enhance #CastLab, an open source app to cast your photos, videos, and audio to DLNA/UPnP devices like your TV or Kodi.
That will be done. More about this project: https://f-droid.org/packages/app.fedilab.castlab

As the main developer of Fedilab, I've never used Open Collective funds for personal needs like buying a phone or paying repairs (yes, plugging/unplugging daily has consequences). I feel uncomfortable about how to use those funds. In April I'll need to pay for server hosting. I also need a more powerful computer. Are those kinds of expenses ok for you? Like repairing my phone due to a worn-out USB connector?

To #Fedilab beta testers, you have already identified some bugs. Be sure you won't have to wait long to see them fixed. We will also work on enhancements. Thank you for contributing to a stable release.

2026-01-23 21:40:09 GMT

To #Fedilab beta testers, we're about to integrate the final changes. The beta APK will be available on our beta FDroid repo and the Google Play beta channel for testing. We'll compile the release APK once you give us the green light. Thanks for your patience!

2026-01-23 20:36:12 GMT

We made so many improvements with #HolosSocial, an ActivityPub server running on your phone. Big thanks to our beta testers who help us identify issues and suggest enhancements.
For tech folks: imagine pointing your domain with a CNAME to a relay and having your own ActivityPub identity with keys and data on your phone. The relay becomes just infrastructure, and you're free to move to another relay whenever you want.
That's the crazy bet we're working on!
More are at @nprofile…7j4l

2026-01-23 20:11:21 GMT

With #HolosSocial, we introduced the same feature that is on #Fedilab to discover videos from the Fediverse thanks to #SepiaSearch (https://sepiasearch.org).
#PeerTube devs offered this option, which is really helpful for discovering new content on their platform.
We might introduce peer-to-peer streaming soon when watching PeerTube videos, with an option to disable this behavior.
Their API is used to display the content, then actions work through ActivityPub.

2026-01-20 21:50:01 GMT

#Holos differs fundamentally from #Fedilab. As the server runs on your phone, using Holos across multiple devices is currently not possible. The relay caches pending activities and clears them once retrieved (multi-device sync not yet implemented). Traditional apps rely on a server API and are limited to what that server knows. Holos fetches data directly via ActivityPub, giving you access to the full Fediverse.
We've started a FAQ based on your feedback: https://holos.social/faq

2026-01-10 21:31:19 GMT

Still in beta but open for testing!
Interesting features:
- Custom emojis (upload to your embedded server or import from other instances)
- Custom domain for portable identity (independent from relay)
- Offline actions (boost, like, compose, delete) synced later
- One-tap timeline view modes (classic, media, video, etc.)
For bug reports or enhancements, open an issue at https://codeberg.org/tom79/Holos-App/issues

2026-01-03 22:12:06 GMT

#Holos now supports custom domains! Use your own domain (@[email protected]) with any relay. Just point a CNAME to the relay and you're done. Your ActivityPub server runs on your phone, your private keys never leave it, and now your identity is truly yours. Switch relays anytime by updating your DNS. No migration needed, no lost followers. Full sovereignty in a mobile app. We're bringing true identity portability to everyone. Learn more by following @nprofile…7j4l

Happy New Year 🎊
We wish you health and success in your projects for the year ahead.
#Fedilab keeps our full attention for 2026. We know we've been heavily focused on #Holos development lately, but both are independent projects and each has its place. Fedilab remains our flagship client. Holos explores data sovereignty with on-device servers.
Thank you for your continued support.

Currently, our #Holos relay server is hosted on our main server alongside all our other projects. With the #FDroid launch underway, we're considering running a fundraiser to cover the costs of a dedicated server for this flagship project. We want to find the right balance: neither oversizing the infrastructure nor underestimating our needs. This would be our first fundraiser dedicated to a specific project, and we welcome all your feedback. Thank you

2025-12-24 18:21:40 GMT

We wish you all a wonderful holiday season filled with joy, warmth, and time with loved ones!

2025-12-22 18:38:03 GMT

Regarding the #Holos app, we'll focus on the #FDroid build and are confident about a quick release. We've already started the work. As for Google Play, we'll try submitting there, but if they reject us or demand feature removal, we won't proceed.

2025-12-19 21:33:38 GMT

For those wondering how #Holos works - running an ActivityPub server directly on your device - here's an explanation:
https://holos.social/how-it-works
Keep in mind: the relay never knows your private key that signs your activities. Your data stays on your phone, you keep control. Even if the relay goes down or blocks you, you can migrate with your identity and followers to another relay.

2025-12-13 20:06:35 GMT

We need your help with the #Holos project. Could you interact with the account @nprofile…e7jh? The goal is to catch all interactions on a fresh app installation with a new account. Thank you for your help!

2025-12-02 21:43:04 GMT

The #Holos relay server code is now public. It may not be perfect but we believe in opening it early to get feedback and improve together. Self-hosters can run their own relay, documentation included.
https://codeberg.org/tom79/Holos-Relay-Server
Mobile app code will follow in the coming weeks. Follow @nprofile…ftz7 for updates, we used the Fedilab account to give this some visibility. Thanks for your support.

2025-11-28 19:38:35 GMT

Every day we get closer to releasing an app that runs your own decentralized social network on your phone. Your data stays yours, and feature requests won't depend on any third-party software or API. We created a dedicated account @nprofile…ftz7 for project updates, feel free to follow. The first federated post has been sent from the app.

@nprofile…d3ed
No, the app and server run in the same process and communicate via bridge. C2S isn't needed here. The server uses S2S for federation with other instances.

2025-11-18 21:18:52 GMT

We're building something for the Fediverse. #Holos
ActivityPub running on your phone. Your own server, your data stored locally. A relay handles your stable identity when you're offline.
One account, all formats. Short text, long articles, photos, videos. The UI adapts to your mood. Switch between text mode, photo grid, video feed, article editor based on what you feel like sharing.
Same network, same followers.
Early stages, but the foundation is solid. We wanted to share the progress.

This message can seem weird, until you tap on the sigma symbol at the bottom #Fedilab

2025-11-07 18:04:10 GMT

Now that #Mastodon supports quotes, there are three important points to know with #Fedilab
- You can change the default privacy for quoting your messages in Settings>Profile (default anyone can quote you)
- You can customize this privacy for each message (when composing)
- If you don't see the merged Boost/Quote button, make sure that you didn't disable it in Settings > Timelines

2025-10-14 18:07:28 GMT

We are really happy that #CastLab reached the official #FDroid repo. This was not so easy for us, but thanks to the help of two volunteers, they made it possible. So a big thank you to them.
https://f-droid.org/packages/app.fedilab.castlab
Concerning #Fedilab, we keep working on fixes and enhancements thanks to your feedback. We already fixed several of them.

2025-10-10 18:59:00 GMT

#CastLab should be available on #Fdroid in coming days 🎉
This app allows to cast media (pictures, videos and audios) from your galleries to devices supporting UPnP protocol (such TV or softwares like Kodi).
You can get more details about this project here (full description and screenshots): https://codeberg.org/tom79/CastLab
We created a project on #Weblate to translate strings at https://hosted.weblate.org/engage/castlab/
Currently, you can download the app through our custom FDroid repo to test it.

2025-09-30 18:00:34 GMT

#Fedilab 3.35.1 is available on #Fdroid. This version fixes the annoying crash when editing a message.

2025-09-26 18:33:02 GMT

If you have a lot of filters, the last release of #Fedilab (3.35.1) might have slowed down the app when fetching messages (cache or not).
Filters are applied locally and we extended them to quoted messages.
We will work on a fix to improve this process.

2025-09-09 19:28:18 GMT

We are somehow waiting for the next Mastodon release before publishing our release.
We don't want to create frustrations with a feature that is not yet available.
That said, we take this time to fix issues and make some enhancements thanks to your feedback and suggestions. #Fedilab

Not only this harms your freedom to install any app you want on your own Android phone, but also this is harmful for privacy/anonymity of Android developers who do not wish to give their personal information to Google.

A "certified Android device" means a normal Android phone. If you haven't flashed a custom ROM or a different operating system like postmarketOS to your phone, you probably have a "certified Android device".
So, if you have a normal Android phone, you will not be able to install apps from developers who are not approved by Google. This gives Google power to block developers and apps it does not like.
This also applies to apps you might acquire outside Google Play, like from F-Droid.³

#Google is making it necessary for #Android app developers to disclose their personal information to Google. This includes legal name, address, email, and phone number.¹
Here is the timeline given by Google.²
1. October 2025
Start as invite-only
2. March 2026
All developers can disclose their identity to Google
3. September 2026
"Regional enforcement begins" in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand
4. 2027 and beyond
"Global enforcement"
We will explain more in next posts.

Could be interesting to have the chart (in a private message) to see if the app failed to record messages or if this is a pagination issue with cached messages. We got similar reports without finding a way to catch it.

2025-08-26 20:03:48 GMT

You might have an active Home timeline, unfortunately, #Mastodon instances won't keep all messages. So you might lose/miss some of them.
#Fedilab introduced the ability to cache your Home timeline in the background. This is also useful if you have a weak connection, the app will read them later from cache. #FedilabTips

We merged the quote and boost actions in the same button for #Fedilab. Taping on the boost button will offer two choices boost or quote.
It is possible that the quote action is disabled due to OP policy with quotes (followers only or no one).

- Register an account on Mastodon (as they don't want to understand that the app doesn't collect emails).
- Filter some search results with #Peertube to exclude "YouTube Downloader" videos
To Google users, keep in mind you can easily switch to FDroid, we would be happy to help if you have questions

You can't quote messages when composing with Mastodon.
Mastodon, currently only allows to see quoted messages.

2025-08-16 21:07:06 GMT

#Fedilab supports the quoting mechanism for long with some softwares that introduced it.
This option is currently hidden in "Extra features" from Settings.
We opened it to #Mastodon in timelines (ie: messages containing quotes), but it is not yet possible to post quoted messages with Mastodon.
Also Mastodon seems to have introduced a degree of privacy. The API returns if the OP accepted to be quoted.
Fedilab already supports this privacy parameter by displaying only accepted quotes.

With #Fedilab, you can customize how timelines are displayed in the app.
For that just open "Main menu > Manage timelines".
You will be able to reorder your timelines by moving items. Hide a timeline by tapping on the eye icon. All timelines can be removed excepted default ones that can only be hidden.
Also, by tapping on the "+" button at the top right, you will be able to follow remote instances (and also Twitter accounts through #Nitter). #FedilabTips

A new app icon will be available in the next release of #Fedilab

Thanks for the tip. I think a good alternative would be to allow the app to maintain the list with updates through our server to keep it up-to-date without any app updates.

Maybe an old unknown feature of #Fedilab. In settings > Privacy you can enable an option to remove UTM parameters in URLs.
It will work for new messages but you can still clear the cache from the app.

Just a reminder that you can long press tabs, especially the Home tab to enable some filters by unchecking some items. #FedilabTips

Did you try in settings > languages > reset languages? Maybe you have to restart the app. It should use your system language.

You might have enabled extra features recently. You can hide it in manage timelines from the main menu.

Our next goal is to make #Fedilab fully compatible with the API 35 of Android. After August 31, Google will refuse updates that don't target this API version.

2025-07-29 17:05:43 GMT

Recently we got several feedback concerning Hashtag and Nitter pinned timelines.
You can perfectly make them work as lists by adding more hashtags or more Nitter accounts on a single timeline.
For that, just long press the tab of pinned timelines.
You will also be able to rename tabs. #fedilabTips

@nprofile…tddc F-Droid can take few days to build and publish new versions
There is also our own F-Droid repo, where we usually publish updates quickly after each release.

(To switch to our repo, you'll have first to uninstall the Fedilab app you installed from official F-Droid repo and then install from our repo. You can use Export and Import options in Fedilab's settings to avoid having to setup everything from the begining :))

You mean the autocomplete feature with hashtags when composing? Currently, we were not aware of that bug.

2025-07-27 18:31:47 GMT

Tomorrow, we should be able to release #Fedilab 3.34.0 in production.
This release comes with the fix of two old annoying bugs:
- Selection of the text that stops working when composing
- Crashes when the fit preview image feature is enabled.
It will also fix a recent crash with conversations.
It will add the quoting support for Mastodon and also improve the experience with highlighted hashtags.
Three dots button menu will now be displayed for remote messages.
