I just saw the price of adding 32GB of DD5 RAM to a Framework Laptop and it was more than the total price of this refurbished ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 that I just bought ... with 32GB of soldered LPDDR4x RAM 😑

"Zoos are not sanctuaries. They are places where animals are confined, deprived of autonomy, and denied the complex environments and social lives they would have in the wild. Like all macaques, Punch should be growing up in a tight-knit family group, learning vital social skills and exploring a rich, natural habitat — not seeking solace from a toy in a concrete pit." https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03-01/punch-monkey-japan-soft-spaces/106393016

Is there an actual legitimate reason everything in the airport has to be so much more expensive than out in the real world or do they just jack the price up on things simply because they can and people will still pay it?

2026-01-31 20:43:41 GMT

OK I am at the airport. Gonna take a gamble that my good mate in Melbourne is not reading this (he hates social media) as I'm heading down to surprise him for his 40th today. Anyway, see ya soon Melbourne friends. And until tomorrow Brisbane. 👋

This article is a few years old but I feel like it pretty accurately captures some kinda way I've been feeling lately. 2026 might very well be the year of small yet steady transcendence. Absolutely wild that I'm still seeing ABC articles with X post embeds in them like they're literally linking straight to a child sexual abuse website and everyone seems to be OK with that. Cancelled our Netflix after finishing up Stranger Things the other week. Assumed they'd email us with some kind of deal trying to win us back. But nothing yet. They don't even offer a free trial any more that we could try to email hop like the old days. Oh well. Guess I'll keep waiting.

Anyone else notice the annoying trend on algorithm-based social media where a clip from an older movie is posted where it's not immediately obvious what the movie is, but it's very familiar, with the text something like "I will never forget this scene after all this time" and you have to click through to the replies and find the one person saying "what's the movie???" then click those replies to find the person who knows the movie and is kind enough to post the title. So then the algorithm boosts the post thinking users really want to see what people are saying about it but they're just looking for the title. It's kind of like engagement bait but not quite. It's like nostalgia targeted information bait. I dunno. Anyone? Just me? Anyway that's why I like it here better. You never see that here.

2025-12-12 21:32:06 GMT

If someone today is earning $75k a year and had their grandparents' purchasing power, they would be looking at houses worth over $2 million, on a single income, instead of being priced out of the median by investors and landlords. That's not progress. That's the generational wealth gap, and we're living it.

If someone today is earning $75k a year. To match their grandparents' home-buying power, they'd need to earn $214k, a 185% pay rise. Think about that next time your boss offers you 3.5% and calls it generous.

So #UpBank is going to start doing the sneaky thing a few other banks do (which should be illegal) where they steal the interest from your savings for that month if you (god forbid) need to use some of your own money during the calendar month, while marketing the theft as "helping you save". I switched from ING to Up Bank because ING started doing this a while ago. Anyway, looks like I'm in the market for a new bank. I'll probably go with Ubank, but happy to take recommendations.
Edit: Ubank are doing the same in October 🙃 (thanks @nprofile…w58a)

So I was getting a bit bored of my locally hosted #GoToSocial account, not really knowing what to do with it, so I'm experimenting with an old idea I had of seeing if I can run a single-user fedi instance for $0 per month using free-tier cloud software and a free domain.
Last time I tried this was with a #Mastodon install on an Oracle cloud VPS until they suspended my entire cloud account after about a year or so with no notice and no way to appeal or anything.
I realised that Google's free-tier offering wouldn't be enough to run a full Mastodon instance, but it would be more than enough to run GoToSocial.
Anyway I just did the migration for my 44 followers and it seemed to work. Follow along if you wanna come along for the ride.
Here's the account: @nprofile…4h3m
And the profile link: https://slo.pp.ua/@phocks
And let me know if you'd like some help setting up your own free instance. I plan to write up a bit of a blog post about it if all goes well.

We are still missing a few things, lost in the vortex of moving house earlier in the year. One of those things was this tarot card which I found behind a cupboard while packing, all set to reunite it with the rest of the deck already packed when we got into the new house.
Only then of course I completely forgot where I put it. I was only just thinking about this card a little while earlier, about how it's probably lost forever and the deck would be eternally incomplete, when my daughter pulls out the Mario Kart 8 Nintendo Switch game case and opens it up, and lo and behold, there it is!
The card is not a particularly good card, signifying hardships, financial, health, isolation, loneliness, but it can also represent resilience, so I'm going to take it in that spirit.
Resilience shows up, right when you think all hope is lost. That seems fitting.
Anyway, just wanted to share.

I've been meaning to ask this on here for a while so I can put a collection together. What is one thing that most people these days believe is true, that you either have a hunch, or are pretty sure, or are quite certain is not actually true? Like if you lived back when most people still believed the world was flat but you were convinced that wasn't the case. Anyway I was just curious. Boosts appreciated so I can get more answers. :BoostOK:

Enjoyed this interview with Margaret Atwood about myth-making and authoritarianism.
"A good rule of thumb is that whatever Margaret Atwood is worried about now, the rest of us will likely be worried about a decade from now. The rise of authoritarianism. A backlash against women’s social progress. Climate change leading to social unrest. Advertising permeating more and more of our lives."

We'll, after about a decade of riding and enough kms to just about circumnavigate the continent of Australia, it's finally time to say goodbye to my trusty old folding electric bike. I'm currently trialing a cargo bike with built-in kids seat for school runs from Lug+Carrie & will probably buy refurbished soon. So if anyone in #Brisbane / #Meanjin is looking for an #eBike on the cheap, this one still goes quite well for its age and with a bit of tender care (new seat etc.) could be done up to be pretty decent. Anyway, let me know and share with anyone who might be interested. (Can include kids trailer or not).

In the figure above, the radius of circle A is 1/3 the radius of circle B. Starting from the position shown in the figure, circle A rolls around circle B. At the end of how many revolutions of circle A will the center of circle first reach its starting point?

Spotted in the backyard. Nothing to see here. Just a branch. Definitely not a tawny frogmouth. Everyone move along. Go about your business.

The research contradicts the prevailing narrative that ancient human diets were primarily based on animal protein, as suggested by the popular “paleo” diet. Many of these diets are based on the interpretation of animal bones found in archaeological sites, with plant-based foods rarely preserved.
However, the discovery of starch grains on ancient tools provides new insight into the central role of plants, particularly starchy tubers, nuts, and roots, which are rich in carbohydrates vital for the energy demands of the human brain.

"Every young person seems to be mocking the sincerity and optimism of a generation – born roughly between 1981 and 1996 – who imbibed the spirit of the Obama era and seemed to believe that if they worked hard, their dreams would come true. Except they didn’t: instead came Brexit, Trump, Covid and AI-generated videos of Elon Musk doing the moonwalk." https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2025/apr/11/horatio-gould-millennial-culture-girls-eric-andre-submarine-alt-j

Sorry we've been a bit slow with the last few Mastodon patch version updates soooo I'm gonna do a database dump and then upgrade to 4.3.6 and then 4.3.7 ... should be zero downtime (unless something catastrophic happens). Fingers crossed. Thanks all! https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.3.7
Edit: OK that took longer than expected (plus I watched an Episode of Beverly Hills, 90210) but we are now running 4.3.7 on BNE Social!

In 1982, while most game developers were busy with space invaders and maze ghosts, Bill Williams created something far more profound: a game about swimming upstream against impossible odds. Salmon Run for the Atari 800 served as a powerful metaphor for life itself, one that resonates even more deeply when you learn about the creator's own struggles with cystic fibrosis. https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2025/04/how-a-1980s-atari-creator-with-cystic-fibrosis-crafted-a-story-of-salmon-survival/

@nprofile…j90y This is one thing I love about Brisbane. Hardly any horns on the road, besides the occasional small toot to let someone know a light is green or something. First time driving in Sydney and even Melbourne I was amazed by how many horns were going off all the time on the roads.

The Shovel continuing to be top tier.
"All of these hand-outs for families, and students and renters. Well what about the people who don't have a HECS debt? What about the people who don't have a mortgage? Who don't have to pay rent? Where's the handout for them?
"You wouldn't believe how hard it is right now. Try getting a builder to renovate a holiday house in Portsea - they're booked up until 2026! That's two years minimum without a second entertaining area over the summer months."
