After skipping very quickly through the technical section during the talk because of time constraints, afterwards Kris gave an interactive session on the technicalities for a handful of interested people. Lovely! Also: food for thought.

Yeah, although I'm very glad LilyPond uses Guile for its musical objects and you can use it in the input even, I'm wondering how nice it could become if the input was re-imagined as a Guile DSL.

Had a most lovely---almost 2h---video chat session with @nprofile…ygzq and Timothy Sample (GNU Mes contributor and author of Germ) on the workings of Ekaitz' rewrite of Mes from a Scheme interpreter to a compiler.
AIUI, Guile Scheme has some interesting characteristics that prevent the Mes compiler from using some simple and low hanging fruit performance improvements. Sorry for being vague, Ekaitz can elaborate.
Wondering if these are also "slowing down" Guile so much---and if not, why not?---and if anything could be done about that.

Age verification has nothing to do with "using one's own computer", it's about running the software on a [your] computer (for any purpose; freedom 0).
Just to note that these kind of things have been predicted and warned for since 1983: If you don't [choose to] run free software, you don't own your "computer", the "computer" owns you.

I really don't get the whole idea of the cookie popups on websites.
I mean, everyone always chooses for: essential cookies only? I do, anyway.
Some sites even say: "Don't you want a functional site?", to which I always silently reply: "Knowing that everyone disables all optional cookies anyway, don't you want (to build) to have a functional site?"
I don't care all that much if your site is broken, it's your site, your choice.

Germ0 replaces all of stage0, including m2-planet at the cost of, currently, only supporting x86_64-linux.
Germ replaces the mes interpreter, with the same caveat. There's just been an Aarch64 port of Mes and MesCC getting contributed.
The work of @nprofile…ygzq making mes faster is more promising in the way of eventually replacing tcc.
So Germ will use Mes and the Mes C library but we may probably see even some more kind of merge between both projects, who knows? Exciting stuff!

Still hooked on BLUE. Hacked all day yesterday and today converting Dezyne's (https://dezyne.org) build system. Opened six issues, and two pull requests, one already merged.
It's not perfect *just* yet, in fact, some issues are show-stoppers for BLUE to replace Autotools for Dezyne, which has a pretty "interesting" build system.
I would very much recommend to anyone who has a soft-spot for build-systems and/or Guile to take a look.
However, the experience of hacking a build system in Guile is amazing! And I'm certain the show-stoppers will be resolved some time soon.

And although @nprofile…lh76 is really still carrying and championing the Hurd effort, plenty of attribution to the work of others, mentioning Guix at least three times!

Well, only if you have been living under a rock since 1983. Some of us have been foreseeing this, been writing about this, and have been taken action since the early eighties. Most every year there is such an incident.
And it has very little if anything to do with Microsoft or with the US. If you're running proprietary software, you are being controlled and all bets are off.
The only way to be in control of your computing is to use free software. And as an aside: using free software from the US is fine.

For one, it's a good guess that you're human and they are notoriously bad at behaving rational and logical. YOLO, FOMO, etc.
For example, the far majority will say they love animals, yet support and sustain the industrialized torture and murdering of animals, even though it is also bad for their health and destroys our planet.

I'm always wary about using environmental (or health) arguments in favor of going #vegan, mostly because veganism is about animal rights, not about benefits for us and thus you can only go plant-based for those reasons, not vegan, though for some veganism may follow more easily after having abstained from the use of animals.

The catering for dinner at the Weeffabriek die the #tdose event were kind of confused/taken by surprise when I asked for the #vegan options.
There was fries, rice, and salad (and a choice of animal cruelty "of course"). One of them tried to convince me that the foe yong hai (a Dutch/Chinese egg recipe) was vegan and another remembered they had a separate #vegan dish prepared somewhere.
Anyway, after I took some fries, rice and salad, one of them came over to me and offered to make #vegan spring rolls. Lovely!
Still, kinda confused about the percentage of carnivores at this free software (open source?) event. We all work hard for a better, freer world, no? What about the poor animals?
In contrast, at the #Guix days, the catering is fully vegan by default.

I've been "playing" with emacs-fj / fj.el for #guix a bit today and with the kind help of @nprofile…33hd got it to work.
TIL:
* use latest git, the v0.6 shipped in guix is b0Rked
* in .git/config, use: url = [email protected]:guix/guix.git
* (setq fj-host "https://codeberg.org"), (setq fj-user "janneke")
* although no documentation is shipped in guix, (info or otherwise), the website does have a README: https://codeberg.org/martianh/fj.el
Yes, that's right, the URL in .git/config must be just right and the "host" variable needs to be an URL.
To get started, try
* M-x fj-list-issues, or
* M-x fj-list-pulls
Then, in .git/config, add
[remote "pulls"]
url = [email protected]:guix/guix.git
fetch = +refs/pull/*/head:refs/remotes/pulls/pr/*
and do: git fetch pulls. You need to manually relate the issue or pull-request number with origin/pulls/XX branch.

Carnists (that includes vegetarians) are weird. At least to someone who is #vegan. To a carnist it may even seem that vegans don't care all that much about one baby wombat and its mother experiencing stress for a minute.
Massive global outage about an influencer separating a baby wombat from their mother for about a minute. The Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese makes a statement how this must have caused stress for mother and baby calling it an outrage. He even suggests the influencer to engage in suicidal acts to see how that goes.
Yet, he together with over 95% of the people being "outraged" pay every day for something similar but far worse being done for their taste pleasure or even convenience.
Thank you for your outrage and please #goVegan.

@nprofile…6m2n in '94 I used (sun's) db and a friend asked me why I didn't use gdb. It was such an amazingly different experience, the gdb ui seemed to be designed with care---dare I say love?---for an actual human (me!) using it.
I went to read all of gnu.org, the philosophy (empowering the user instead of keeping them ignorant), the coding standards (info instead of elitist manual pages, no arbitrary limits, etc ...) and decided I wanted to be part of this.
The reason some of us prefer to say GNU/Linux is rooted in the idea that even people that have been using "Linux" for decades, may not have heard about GNU.
