We're still pushing away at our goal of giving our entire team a raise in celebration of our 20th anniversary issue in October. Each subscription takes us one step closer.

There isn't a better way to thank them for their part in the last 20 and the next 20.

2026-07-14 17:13:07 GMT

We are about halfway towards our goal of picking up enough new subscriptions to give our staff, authors, translators, and artists a raise when we publish our 20th anniversary issue in October. Thanks to all who have signed up and/or boosted the signal.

The subscription drive (to increase staff and contributor pay) is running until the anniversary of the magazine. We're about halfway to the goal. Thank you to everyone that has subscribed so far!

Twenty years ago today, I was talked into starting a magazine. The anniversary of the first issue is October 1st, but this is when it began for me. Time flies.

RE: https://mastodon.online/@clarkesworld/116721717249999583
The annoying thing about doing a subscription drive is having to keep yelling about it. Doesn't work if I say nothing. Strange, eh?

Ultimately, we're hoping to add a few hundred new paid subscribers. That will let us complete the current cycle of pay increases, including a bump to 15 cents/word for fiction. Our target is October, but it is not the end. We'll be working on this until the pay rates are where they should be.

Why are we doing this? Almost everyone working in short fiction is underpaid for their work, particularly staff. It's an industry problem and we've been doing our part to clean up our own house. Celebrate our 20th anniversary by helping us do something for the team that made CW endure.

2026-06-09 19:07:42 GMT

Between now and October (our 20th anniversary issue), we're running a subscription drive and dedicating all new revenue toward improving pay for our staff, writers, artists, and contractors. Details on how to subscribe can be found here:

Went to the Locus Awards this past weekend and was pleasantly surprised to win these. Was also thrilled to see two of our stories win in best short story and best novelette. Congrats to Thomas Ha and Somto Ihezue on those! Thank you Locus voters! Links to all our award nominated and winning stories can be found here:

No one in short fiction is getting rich. Most (all here) are terribly underpaid. We're putting 100% of all new subscription income towards improved pay across the board. We love our jobs, but a job should help you pay your bills. So you're not just subscribing. You're helping us. Thanks!

If the subscription numbers can be kept up, we will be increasing our fiction pay rate to 14 cents/word by the end of the year. Would have happened sooner, if a certain bookseller hadn't screwed us. We're working to pay everyone here better. No one left behind.

I didn't plan on making these daily updates, but we crossed into the 200s over the holiday and that seems like a reason to celebrate. Only 286 subscriptions remain before we've erased all the losses caused by Amazon!

2024-07-02 18:29:44 GMT

We're 344 subscribers away from where we were before Amazon pulled the rug out from under their traditional subscription program. There is light at the end of the tunnel, but still much work to do.

We're still rebuilding subscriptions (since Amazon abandoned them) and pushing back against the generated submissions on a daily basis. We'd like to keep doing so. The path forward requires us to keep shouting from the rooftops, so...

I'm dying reading one of the more recent "make money with Clarkesworld" articles. Clearly generated, but maybe in another language and machine translated to English.
"While prior composing experiences can be valuable, it’s not in a general sense required to surrender to Clarkesworld Magazine."
