I think that Ky Decker’s blog post about “AI” and burnout (https://ky.fyi/posts/ai-burnout ) is worth reading. I am experiencing a bunch of similar feelings, and the paragraph starting with, “I encountered each of these scenarios over the past few years”, is a description of a living nightmare.
I am thankful to work with skilled and thoughtful people who are grappling with these things, and luckily, my passion for helping people is, so far, catapulting me through the moral injury of “Claude said this” and “Claude did that”.
Funny enough, today also marks my 14th year of working at Apple, adjusted for when I started my internship. Despite the broader industry getting more morally perilous, more full of shit, and less fun, I’m far from done trying to make authentication technologies more usable, delightful, and secure. Onward.

I am unexpectedly finding myself in New Delhi, India a week from yesterday. There for a few days, then to Mumbai.
This is my first time visiting India. What should I do in these places? What things should I do to prepare for my visit?

Exciting news! The Authentication Experience team at Apple, which brings you the Passwords app, passkeys, AutoFill of codes from Messages and such, and a lot more, is hiring a software engineer!
This is the team that I founded, grew, and managed for years. Its members (including me!) are passionate, empathetic, and skilled. And we’re cooking up some awesome stuff.
If you are interested, please apply through the website. People of all backgrounds who know either Swift or Objective-C are encouraged to apply. The role is in Cupertino, California.
Roles on this team are rarely available. Please share! https://jobs.apple.com/en-us/details/200659750-0836/software-engineer-authentication-experience

Did you know that you can export your saved data (including passkeys!) from Apple Passwords to another app on your iPhone or iPad? Top level of the app, ... menu, “Export Data to Another App”.
And you can export your saved data (including passkeys) from 1Password to another app on your iPhone or iPad, too! Top level of the app, user avatar, Settings, Advanced, Start Export.
Folks from 1Password, Dashlane, Bitwarden, NordPass, Apple, and Google collaborated on a data interoperability standard to make this possible. Building on top of that, iOS has first-class support for migrating that standardized data between apps.
Not all apps will support all of the data that’s possible to be transferred, but this really might help you switch from one app to another. There’s no need for a desktop computer and a CSV file, and those CSV files never supported migrating passkeys. The OS support for this exists on Mac, but third-party apps have been slower to adopt it.
Everything I’ve said here is public information and available to use on your i{Phone,Pad}OS 26 devices today.

This post is wrong on a key detail: WebKit. WebKit has an influence on the direction of the web platform. To say it’s only Firefox that exerts influence here is fiction, betraying a lack of understanding of how web standards work in 2025.
“Full control over web standards” has little to do with the Blink/WebKit shared lineage and a lot more to do with an engine’s market share and the values of the contributors to that engine.
Gecko is important, but don’t kid yourself into thinking things that aren’t true.

I read something that @nprofile…cjng wrote a few weeks or months ago about how he’s observed that more and more people online reply to posts by seemingly giving their opinions about nouns contained in the post, rather than reading the post word for word, understanding its meaning, and replying to the meaning of the post.
I now cannot stop noticing this happening. It’s not people engaging in bad faith. It’s people failing to engage properly at all.

2025-12-16 15:08:45 GMT

“I think I know how to use passwords securely, so passkeys are annoying and nobody should use them.” is tech-speak for, “I don’t care about the online account security of other people.”, or more succinctly, “I don’t care about other people.”
People overestimate their competence and underestimate the cost of phishing and credential stuffing. Individuals having to learn to use password management software and be vigilant against phishing is an industry failure, not a personal success.

I gave an opening keynote at the FIDO Alliance’s “Authenticate” conference a few weeks ago! Although it featured timely strategies and tips for professionals deploying passkeys, my primary goal was to explain, as clearly as I can, why passkeys are important and how we should use them to reduce the harm that passwords cause.
YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otObbUSxcqs
I’m really proud of this talk and I hope you’ll watch it and share it with others. I put care in to making it approachable while still delivering my perspective and insights to security professionals. If you don't get the “why” behind passkeys, this talk will help fill that gap.

2025-10-31 22:59:17 GMT

You may have heard that “X”, “the everything app”, is making users re-enroll their passkeys so they have passkeys that are saved for x.com instead of twitter.com.
Something that all of y’all should know is that, although passkeys are bound to an origin, passkeys *are* usable across origins (specific limitations apply). By adopting [Related Origin Requests](https://web.dev/articles/webauthn-related-origin-requests), the X app and website could make use of twitter.com passkeys. (Adopters of Related Origin Requests in production include Amazon, Microsoft, and Ticketmaster.)
Forcing users to re-enroll their credentials is categorically technically unnecessary, unless their goal was to ensure users never see “twitter.com” in password manager UI. Hypothetically, if I had to execute on *that* goal, I wouldn’t set a deadline by which I’d stop accepting twitter.com passkeys, because that’s an inconvenience for users that can turn into a self-inflicted downgrade attack of sorts.

Today’s update to macOS Tahoe (26.0.1) resolves an issue in apps where AutoFill for Mac apps could make apps slow down over time due to improper handling of event taps, causing them to accumulate over time. People particularly noticed this in Chromium-based web browsers and Electron apps. If your app or framework decided to work around this issue by using an internal AppKit defaults key to turn off AutoFill, I recommend you re-test on macOS 26.0.1, then limit that workaround only to macOS 26.0.0, and remove it for macOS 26.0.1 and above.
Performance should be better now, but if your Mac app will never, ever benefit from offering AutoFill of security codes received via Messages or Mail, the right way to do it is this supported Info.plist key: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/bundleresources/information-property-list/nsautofillrequirestextcontenttypeforonetimecodeonmac

2025-07-20 21:31:10 GMT

By listening to lots and lots of feedback, I’ve learned that if someone’s main experience with passkeys is with a password manager that doesn’t natively integrate into the OS it’s running on — instead, one that hijacks web browser API — they’re far, far more likely to think they’re not a great user experience.
Some browser extensions that replace the built-in OS experiences have done so much harm to how technologists view the technology.
I’m not saying that third-party, independent, cross-platform apps are bad. They’re fantastic! What I’m saying is that they should integrate into the native bindings to be a data source for all web browsers and apps on a platform. Nobody wants a credential that only works in web browsers and not other native apps.

iOS 26 (and OSes 26 in general) add an OS-facilitated way to securely migrate your passkeys, passwords, and other data saved in one password manager app to another. The details here are super interesting and are covered in the WWDC25 video “What's new in passkeys” (https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2025/279). The rest of this post includes a summary of part of that video and other publicly-available information. (I am not breaking any kind of news here.)
- Data is sent from one app to the other without exporting any kind of file to a filesystem. This means it can’t accidentally be accidentally uploaded to an attacker attempting to compromise one or all of your accounts.
- There’s an OS API that password manager apps call to export their data. Then, securely and out-of-process, users select which app to send the data to. They are reminded of the scope of the data, and authentication with local biometrics or their passcode to confirm sending the data.
- The destination app is not revealed to the source app.
- Remember that crappy unstandardized CSV format for migrating passwords between password managers? It’s going to be a thing of the past, because…
- The data sendable via the API is explicitly based on the “Credential Exchange Format” (https://fidoalliance.org/specifications-credential-exchange-specifications/) standard. This standard is being developed in the FIDO Alliance, the standards body working on passkeys, but the spec covers far more than passwords and passkeys. In fact, it was co-developed by 1Password, Dashlane, and others. There’s a collection of Swift structs in the SDK implementing the standard, with as few modifications as possible.
- The data format part of the API is versioned so it can evolve as the Credential Exchange Format does.
I know it’s taken some time for this to come to fruition, but I hope that delivering a phishing-resistant credential migration process based on open standards (with a credential format standardized for the first time!) makes up for the delay. As I have said since day 1, your passkey data is yours. Passkeys are not a form of “vendor lock-in”.

@nprofile…kgua One of the defining features of passkeys is that they are phishing-resistant. This in part means that a confused or misled human cannot “use” a passkey for one service in the context of another. So for an app to make use of a passkey, it must be strongly associated with a domain. In the context of federation, this is obviously untenable.
Fortunately, there is another layer of flexibility in the design. The solution here is to use the right web view (on iOS, ASWebAuthenticationSession, likely with prefersEphemeralWebBrowserSession set to true) to do the sign up and log in. During sign-in for existing accounts with passwords in particular, please do take a look at “automatic passkey creation”, sometimes called “conditional create”, to give people the smoothest transition to a passkey after signing in.
This may be a large change, and I am sorry about that, but please do know that it’s not a thoughtless limitation or a bug: it’s a part of the design.

2025-05-01 15:46:09 GMT

Here are my quick reflections about today, “World Password Day”.
Passwords hurt many, many people. They’re incredibly user-hostile, putting burdens on people that computing devices should solve instead. I love my password manager because it helps me navigate the world, but there is a limit on who can be helped with software that layers on top of the broken password experience.
I can see that that pain is increasingly understood by the people who make and manage apps and websites, as evidenced by huge uptake of passkeys, as well as other “passwordless” strategies deployed by websites. I’m seeing a mix of passkeys, OTPs, and magic links these days.
A few months ago, I wrote about the flaws of email “magic links” and how passkeys can be integrated with magic links to provide a better user experience. I’m still proud of this piece, and I’d love for folks to read it. https://rmondello.com/2025/01/02/magic-links-and-passkeys/
Large websites and apps are seeing incredible results deploying passkeys as a core part of their user authentication strategies, with fewer failed sign-ins and faster sign-ins overall. And this is before we’ve seen large uptake of “Automatic Passkey Upgrades”, which will accelerate this trend.
Obviously, passkeys aren’t perfect, but they have compelling industry momentum and a group of stakeholders who care deeply about making them better. User experiences are being refined, powerful capabilities are being added, and yes, the ability to move passkeys between credential managers is coming.
I am thrilled by the progress passkeys have made in just a few short years and extremely optimistic about their future. Let’s keep it up. :)

An elderly relative of mine who is on Medicare was talked into purchasing a secondary health insurance plan ($350 a month) a year and a half ago. The plan was never set up properly so that if their primary insurance failed to cover something, it would be billed to the secondary insurance.
I intervened, and got the secondary insurance to admit the mistake. They said it would take 90 days to fix, and then they’d re-run all of the failed claims. After the 90 days, it wasn’t fixed, nor did they re-run the claims. They then said we could request every individual claim be re-run, in a time-consuming way.
My relative is out $4,000, having never benefitted at all from the insurance. They cancelled the plan and requested all of their money back. So far, they have been refunded one month of their premium.
Does anyone have any advice or ideas for escalating this? Again, they’re on Medicare, and have been scammed over $4,000. The scam insurance is through Anthem.

2025-03-19 20:03:02 GMT

I’m seeing some people misunderstand something that I think is important.
The bug in the Passwords app that led to sometimes fetching service icons over an insecure connection, which has since been fixed, could never have led to and never did lead to the phishing of password credentials due to an architecture that separates concerns.
Even when it didn’t mandate secure connections, which has been rectified, all fetches were made in a stateless fashion, with absolutely no attempt to fill or provide credentials. (You may be interested in knowing that all fetches of icons in the Passwords app are made over the privacy proxy infrastructure that powers iCloud Private Relay, even if you’re not a Private Relay user).
This was an unfortunate bug that could potentially lead to a threat actor splicing in web content fetched by the device, including icons, but phishing of passwords simply was not possible.

If your life was an RPG, what would the “repel” or "repellent” item keep away from you?

For me, in Ivory, all shared YouTube links look like this. Anyone know what this is about / is anyone else experiencing this?

What are folks doing for alt accounts these days? Like a more private social media account where they are spicier, whatever “spicy” means for them?

I just didn’t go and make things so complicated. They were complicated to begin with and I accurately described the complexity.

In the evening, my MacBook Pro is my phone, TV, and everything else. It’s the only device I use. Sometimes I want to turn the brightness down even further than the minimum level.
Today I found Lunar, a macOS app that enables exactly that. You press F1/brightness-down past the lowest setting, and rather than the screen turning off, it gets *even darker*. Super slick. I adore this app. https://lunar.fyi

Today in weird adventures cleaning up my mom's house: found a mattress for a baby in a crawlspace. Nobody in our family has any memory of putting it there. Must have been the previous owners. 🙃

@npub15ml…2w4s I guess what I’m trying to say is, “timeline is folly”.

My most cancelable opinion?
That games in The Legend of Zelda series don’t happen in any kind of coherent timeline. Instead, they’re just tweaked and mutated versions of the same rough outline of a legend.

I have been dealing with a health episode since just after Christmas. Involves COVID-19 and unexpected complications, plus changes to my health insurance leaving me uninsured during a medical emergency.
Anyway, if you haven’t heard from me recently, that’s why! lmao

(Help me! Please boost!)
I’m trying to get my old apartment rented out! (I have several months left on the lease that I’m on the hook for if my landlord can’t find someone else to rent it.)
It’s super spacious and in San Jose, on the border of Cupertino. The commute to any Cupertino-based Apple office is 🍰. It’s walking distance to a Safeway. Has AC and in-unit washer/dryer.
Please DM me any questions, and here is my landlord's listing: https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/apa/d/san-jose-luxurious-penthouse-condo-in/7699720128.html

I used the “Curb” taxi app for the first time the other day. It required an account and that account had to be password-based.
My password manager generated a strong password that wasn't accepted by Curb. Fortunately, I remembered that I could contribute to Apple’s “Password Manager Resources” open source project to ensure nobody ever has this problem ever again. https://github.com/apple/password-manager-resources/pull/724/files
So if you ever have a password format compatibility problem, remember that you can contribute, too!
