You know, honestly, more than monetary donations, if somebody worked at a company that had access to a lot of 18 terabyte and larger hard drives and could talk to us, that's where we are really suffering. The internet archive has no special priority in buying hard drives and those things are insane.

2026-08-23 19:39:48 GMT

There's a way for me to notice "hey, a lot of stuff just got uploaded to the Archive, in a place that doesn't usually see a lot of stuff uploaded". Sometimes it's spammers, sometimes it's other things.
This time, it turns out someone has been mirroring the entire open academic output of the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute (TARI). They're at nearly 10,000 papers and counting!

On one hand, the AI skeptic screaming is tiring.
On the other hand, I am glad we are having at least one overarching top-down technology getting an absolute blanket party out of the gate and either proving itself or it will be a punchline or refined to within a millimeter of perfect.
A lot of what we use in technology would be so much better if it had had to run this gauntlet.

It was brought to my attention that Real Hack History, a youtube channel, has been uploading documents, audio and video related to hacking history to the Internet Archive and they deserve a little collection. I'm making them for them now but you can look at their excellent uploads immediately.
Really good stuff. Really well sourced.

Oh, you got your emulator running with a few games to play? That's cute.
Andrew Warkentin has made a VM that has over 1,700 operating systems on it that you select from a launcher. One Thousand Seven Hundred Plus.
Aww, your emulator takes a couple gigs. His takes 174 of them.

Spammers run rampant against the archive, trying their best to post advertisements and tricky links outward to sketchy sites. They've been doing it for years, and there's mitigations I and others work to keep it contained and miminal. Recently, someone is trying to break out of containment and is posting literally thousands of items a day.

It's not about rhyme or reason or being careful - there are doubles, the contents may be different than the labels, and of course many scanned labels seem weird or dirty - likely they've seen the floors of offices for years.
But they exist now. Someone can download them, curate them, find the value. I hope they have a joy doing it. For me - it's about moving on through the next few thousand.

Next on the digitization death march are 3.5" floppies. I've been sent thousands of them over the years. I'm going to just image and scan them and pack them for perm storage.
May I present the first 847.
https://archive.org/details/2025_01_NOOKS_AND_CRANNIES
Floppies read by Applesauce, and the front of the floppies scanned in a flatbed at 600dpi.
I won't be stopping until all my donated floppies are online.

UMATIC (also known as 3/4" tape) is a professional format from the 1970s and 1980s. The tapes often need to be baked to get them back to functional. I've been doing thousands of these tapes and it wears down the machinery, needing repair. But the results are striking.

I just dropped $1,600 for a full servicing and repair for two UMATIC tape decks, money I don't really have to spend. I asked for people to help and some have, I just want to make the appeal more informative.

because 1. This is the backlog since the services were cut off from the network to do a security sweep and 2. There have been review spammers and I've been running custom scripts to deal with it while we fixed up solutions but I'm not able to do so currently.

The 86box emulator is mature enough that I hope someone steps in to consider making a WASM compile of it. If we can get that running, a whole host of Windows and other operating systems come to the Internet Archive's emulation system.

So, great news. BBSLIST.TEXTFILES.COM now has all 275 changes I'd not added from the "Suggested BBS Corrections" form I'd not checked, as well as me fixing one or two really annoying minor build bugs (nobody ever saw these but me) and also I've made a proper backup and stored it all away safely.
Next: I'm always sitting on old BBS lists that I need to reformat to add their changes into the list. It's a "when I get to it" project. But for now... 109,000 BBSes listed!!

2024-07-03 02:58:34 GMT

Oh, are you worried about procrastinating or not keeping up with projects?
I finally rediscovered the spreadsheet from bbslist.textfiles.com where people have been submitting updates and corrections.
I hadn't touched it for 5 years. 250 BBSes now going in.

2024-06-14 02:27:32 GMT

I have TEMPORARILY gotten through all the VHS tapes within easy reach. A great day. I suspect there are probably a few small piles in my storage I need to reveal and uncover. But it's pretty amazing.
The UMATIC decks are in rough shape. Next is repairing them to clear out the remaining UMATICS. I assume nobody is sitting on one.
