That is easy to say, and obviously my frustration. But people are free to make their own choices and whether or not someone chooses to take that extra (I agree, not necessarily difficult) effort is not reason enough to either say you love them or you are cutting yourselves off from each other's lives.
I use your service happily and enthusiastically but this is an unhelpful comment.

I am pretty pissed that just because Google has captured the SMS/MMS messaging market with its proprietary RCS standard, I might have to switch from a microG-based Android OS to something with actual Google integration just to even receive text messages from loved ones.

I would be more likely to believe that remote work is somehow responsible for more job loss than AI if companies doing RTO mandates weren't also doing mass layoffs. Also would be interested to know if using RTO mandates as backdoor layoffs is accounted for- arguably the goal is the layoff, not the RTO, so a bit of a cheat to attribute a causal connection.
I haven't ready that study to see if this is accounted for but some obvious questions that came to mind.

Alright Mastodon, I need help.
I might be forced to hire an "automation engineer" (which I'm not opposed to), and am doing my damnedest not to hire an "ai engineer" (which I am very much opposed to).
What questions should I ask in an interview to make sure someone knows what they're doing and won't just vibecode? I am not that kind of engineer, but will be hiring and supervising this role.
And if you might be interested in this, DM me! If it goes forward I can share.

What do people here think about Ente for photo backup and organization? Yay or nay?
Does it work well? Trustworthy? Does the company have secret terrible deeds or opinions?

I finally did it. My Duolingo renewal was coming up so I canceled it. Could not give them more money after they went all in on AI and replacing human workers.
Been using it for 9 years, happily paying for it for most of that time, and gradually it replaced all games I used to keep on my phone. I will miss it, the habit of low-key working on languages, and pour one out for my streak of 4+ years.
Anyone know of any language learning apps (paid is great) that are good and not AI?

Y'all, I find myself suddenly and unexpectedly pushing back within my company on a suddenly bad parental leave policy. There is popular pushback and appetite for something better, including all the way up at leadership levels.
So I would really like to know what your org offers to get ideas to bring!
US-based companies please, especially in the renewable energy industry or engineering.
I don't ask often, but please boost for reach!

#bookstodon #bookchallenge: Choose 20 women authors whose work you admire. One author per day for 20 days, in no particular order.
8. Deb Chachra for her amazing HOW INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS.
This book is just so, so good. A poetic, even lyrical biography of the hidden world of technological infrastructure, and how we and it shape each other in turn. Fantastic and also a must-read for engineers or others who in any way work on these systems. Also she is here in the Fediverse!

I hear there are some folks migrating here from corporate social media, so updating my introduction!
I'm an engineer working on grid-scale energy storage. I'm all about renewables, electrification, sustainability, and circular economies. Past life in physics and hope one day to return there, but now focused on our great task.
I also like helping people find ways to get involved in climate work. Always happy to chat!
I toot about other stuff too, frequent topics in my bio.

This is a long shot, but a family member is trying to get the word out:
The union leadership of the Dakota County United Educators union of teachers and staff in school district 196 in the Twin Cities is doing some shady stuff with the new contract, and the vote is on Monday August 25.
If you or anyone you know is in the DCUE, vote against the new contract and spread the word!
Here is the quick site with info about it:

This is one of the most dystopian things I've ever heard, and the tech industry is beyond satire at this point.
No longer can "tech megacorp fires employees then tells them to use its own genAI tool that has displaced their jobs for emotional support and jobseeking" be used for your satirical story hook.

Saw this go around, and made me even happier for putting in the effort to get comfortable with RSS as a news feed. It has been well worth it.
(Personally been enjoying Capy Reader from F-Droid; tried a few online-based ones for portability, but success came when I eventually realized I like the simplicity and anonymity of a local-only reader, and I really only look at it on my phone anyway.)
As always, @npub1fdr…lvhs is a must-read (though good luck keeping up).

I am unfortunately far too long out of school so this may be either wrong or oversimplified, but I think it is because the spin of each proton or neutron in the pair will either add or cancel. If each has spin magnitude of 1, it could be +1 +1 = +2 or +1 -2 = 0.

I did just this and put Bodhi on my 8 year old but just fine laptop. Worked so well that I put Manjaro on my 1 year old laptop because Windows 11 just sucks.

Anyone have any recommendations for Bookwyrm instance(s) oriented around climate change and climate action? (But happy with a well-run generic instance too!)
Looking to join one to start tracking and recommending reads on those topics, including climate justice, sustainability, solarpunk, economics, and circular economies, but also overlapping a bit with technology, history, democracy, politics, finance, and potentially other tangentially related topics.
