Isn't that just thanks to the LLM peddlers hyping everything as AI?
Seems a bit like a cause and effect switcharoo here.

I'm not sure how far I made it into the article (scrollbars these days) and my sarcasm-meter is overworked from all the shit that's been happening in the world, but: I could for the life of me not figure out if this article was a parody or not.
I recall this author wrote some good stuff in the past?

Yes, that's correct. Nothing has changed for you then.
But why would the Linux layer you're talking about work differently?

Since you mentioned a Linux Android layer: what are you opinions of Waydroid and Sailfish OS's Android layer?

With Google locking down Android are there any viable mobile OSs, not based on Android, usable as a daily driver besides #SailfishOS?
I haven't used any of the other mobile Linux OSs besides #Sxmo for a short while.
And "viable" is of course very subjective but minimally one should be able to make and receive calls without any issues, SMS, mobile data up to 5G and VoLTE, run a Signal client¹ and browser.

This ties in with a lot of [@bert_hubert](https://eupolicy.social/@bert_hubert )'s recent articles about Europe needing to become more independent from the US wrt technology.
https://berthub.eu/articles/
Also [@Mer__edith](https://mastodon.world/@Mer__edith ) after the talk I mentioned #SailfishOS to you. Which is, IMHO, the only viable alternative to iOS and Android at the moment.
I've been using it as a daily driver since 2013. It's made by ex-Nokia employees after Microsoft destroyed it.

Attended a great talk yesterday at @npub1nvr…mpj2 hosted by Nuria Ribas Costa with [@Mer__edith](https://mastodon.world/@Mer__edith ) and Evelyn Austin (@npub1vuw…gshh) about #Signal, AI and Europe's "Big Tech Initiatives" (amongst other things).
They had an interesting perspective on how Europe can catch up on the US with regards to Big Tech, "the cloud"¹, hyperscalers, etc.
Their perspective was: should we even want this? Should we want to copy the US's Big Tech template and perhaps end up like them?

I released the first alpha of my social media meta-client yesterday. So far only for #SailfishOS but Android's coming too after I've figured out all the Play Store stuff.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the EU should reserve some serious money, fork Mozilla and make regulations that governmental websites need to work on their fork (and Big Tech gatekeeper websites as well).
This is one of the items to stay independent from Google's, Apple's and the US's whims.
(The other item is a mobile OS like @npub1xrs…qupw's #SailfishOS.)

Somewhere in the back of my brain there's this sensation that something like this should exists / be possible.

In computer science exists there something like "reversible functions"? (I lack the vocabulary.)
What I mean is a function where if I put in A I get B and if I put in B I get A so that one has just one piece of code instead of two translators (for the A=>B case and for the B=>A case).
I can image for mathematical functions this would be 'easy' but I'm trying to apply it to translating to and from JSON 😅

How cool is this? Look at those copyright dates.
Embeddable #CommonLisp (ECL) is a CL implementation that can be made to run pretty much anywhere there is a C compiler and it has been doing that since 1984!
I had it running in a Quake console once.
Now I'm playing around with LQML to see if I can deliver an app on Android, #SailfishOS and iOS without too much platform-specific code.
Thanks to all the #ECL maintainers over the years!
