Last Notes npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Short answer for me is yes to all of the above. Heartburn, GERD, a chest-gripping sensation like a heart attack, lower abdominal pain, distended stomach, diarrhea, weakness... and the eventual emergence of other auto-immune disorders (psoriasis and lactose intolerance). I developed my fully-expressed celiac disease at age 49, after a 3 week business trip to India. Three bouts of food poisoning triggered it. (There's a genetic predisposition... both my sisters, probably my parents.) It took a few years of major denial to finally admit what I had. 2 days after going gluten-free, I started to feel good... and within a week, great. And I stayed great for 15 years... until 6 weeks of radiation treatment for cancer stirred up a new set of GI problems. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Yeah it was hot in San Francisco today, upper 80s. Low 80s inside the house (no air conditioning here). And we're looking at temperatures in the mid-90s Wednesday for the western half of San Francisco (which will make it our highest temp in 2 years). The beaches will be 15 degrees cooler. By Thursday things should settle down. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Thanks, sun whisperer. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz This morning, 6:46 a.m. #photography https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/168/900/561/057/968/original/e142fa3b4ad08cd7.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Everything about this is 👍 It takes a lot of mental trickery to look at the things that are wrong and not have them drag you down. That's especially true for health and financial problems. But it's also true for things that need fixing. For the last 12 years I've been looking at (okay avoiding looking at) blistering paint in the kitchen - a dozen places on the wall where the paint bubbled up and cracked. I know it needed fixing but I didn't have the energy or patience to do it, so I procrastinated. Yesterday I started tackling it. I'm halfway done... and god it feels good. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz A mile! Yes! npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz 💔 She will always, fondly, be the cheerleader. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz This update is 👍 npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz You didn't need this extra work and worry... that's pretty much a given. And friday can't come soon enough. In the meantime, we are all sending our best to you three. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Just one puff of wind up the ass and suddenly she started strutting around like Marilyn Monroe 🙄 Geeky side note here: Yesterday I had a few minutes to play with a 100-400mm lens. I've always noticed how birders with super-zooms get lovey, shallow depth of field even when shooting with narrow apertures. While that shallowness puts a premium on accurate focus, it gives the birds nice separation from the bokeh'd environment around them. This was the first time I experienced that myself. The pigeon, 45 feet away, was shot with a focal length of 400mm at f/8. My depth of field calculator says the DOF was only one foot deep. That's pretty narrow. I'm used to thinking of f/8 as a landscape setting. For example: on a 50mm lens focusing on a church 400 ft from our house, f/8 leaves everything from 50 feet to infinity in focus. Anyway, consider my sotted mind blown. #photography #bird https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/117/083/736/828/105/367/original/be3766b2445d5880.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz I shall call you Dahlia, the flower whisperer. Did you know Dahlia has been among the top 1,000 names given to newborn girls in the United States since 2006 and among the top 300 since 2022? Hey, speaking of influencers, a couple of weeks ago Chris and I were desperate for something new to stream and we watched two episodes of Kim Kardashian's All's Fair. It made me stabby, so we switched to something else and I'm better now. Anyway, you've been forewarned. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Ooooh. I just discovered there are three programmable settings on my camera. So - purely for science and absolutely, definitely not because it would make me more popular - I have set them to cats, flowers, and birds. Stand back, world: a new Bob is born! Cal was amazing - cute, bright, funny, and sarcastic. Unfortunately, he lost his battle with Alzheimer's last 8 months ago, after an intense, all-too-short battle. The first picture is Cal, in bed, drinking my coffee in 1979. This is the Cal I first met in a disco, went home with, and dated until we decided to move in together as roommates and best friends. The second picture is Cal 30 years later, when he came to San Francisco and teamed up with my then-partner to tease me mercilessly. Cal and I spent a week together, romping around the Bay Area together, exploring outdoorsy places. He wore Gore-Tex so we had to go outdoors a lot. Anyway, I wrote a letter to Cal after he died - and sent it to a mutual friend. She approved and wrote a similar letter too. My letter is in the alt-text of the first photo. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/705/396/294/165/471/original/978e6f0bdef26275.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/705/396/495/201/866/original/cee7c2c117d36532.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz 🦵🦵 npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz This is also how I greet people who come to our front door 😁 Haight Street Tuesday, May 12th, 2026, 4:15 p.m. #FensterFreitag #WindowFriday #photography https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/116/579/239/732/496/995/original/b3fb4e84d97d44d3.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Been busy this week but all's good here. Wrapped up more tasks for my late friend Bill. The estate sale went well: after 4 days nearly everything was sold. Bill's house is now empty, ready for minor repairs, an appraisal, and hopefully a successful sale in the next few months. And today we have rain. Beneficial rain. Yay! The lizard looks up and says to the monkey "hey, what are you doing?" The monkey says "smoking a joint, come up and join me." So the lizard climbs up, sits next to the monkey, and they have another joint. After a while the lizard says his mouth is dry and he's going to get a drink from the river. At the riverbank, the lizard is so stoned that he leans too far over and falls in. A crocodile sees this and swims over to the stoned lizard, helping him to the side. Then croc asks "what's the matter with you?" The lizard explains he was sitting in a tree, smoking a joint with a monkey, his mouth got dry and he was so wasted that when he went to get a drink from the river he fell in! The croc says he has to check this out. He walks into the jungle, finds the tree where the monkey is finishing a joint, looks up and says "Hey MONKEY!" The monkey looks down and says "FUUUUUCK, DUDE....... how much water did you drink?" https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/917/701/283/959/035/original/20b227b162d78abf.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz #SilentSunday #photography https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/917/365/463/884/863/original/b5f4d53c3b627b44.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Jazz. The GT, with a 6 cylinder and 140 HP, was much faster. Opinions vary widely. I saw this online: "The Pontiac Fiero... is one of the 100 worst cars ever built, one of the ten cars that should be avoided by tall people, one of the worst ever Indy 500 Pace Cars and, because of its poor sales, one of the 10 greatest automotive financial disasters of all time. Other lists, however, rate the little two-seater as one of the best sports cars of the 1980s, call it one of the ten unexpectedly best cars for tall people and even rank it as one of the best choices for future collectability." With plastic body panels and sloppy construction, the Fiero suffered from early reliability issues, underpowered engines, and a reputation for engine fires (mostly in 1984). But by 1988, with a new suspension, Pontiac got it right. And then they killed it off. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Harrison Street Thursday January 8th, 2026, 4:58 p.m. #photography #StreetPhotography https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/883/787/399/807/174/original/ce60b404273d88ce.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Happy anniversary to both of you ❤️❤️❤️ npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz 🙄 npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz 25th and Harrison Thursday, January 8th, 2026, 4:46 p.m. #photography https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/866/093/101/890/556/original/41e95d0ecc9eae6e.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz A crane. December 4th 2025, 3:28 p.m. So one month ago, Chris and I went downtown to take some pictures at the soon-to-be-shuttered San Francisco Centre. This was the only shot I got. Heck no. Here is my final post of the year. It's the same view as the previous one (St. Paul's Catholic Church), but photographed on a rainy day, through a water-filled condom. Hey, I am doing my best here. Bear with me. (Note: the first time I posted this picture, nearly 3 years ago, my husband said I was going to lose followers because of it. That might also be true now. It was a hard 2 weeks but Bill's final days were peaceful. Bill was 95 years old. He started in New York, served in the Navy and taught aviation during the Truman presidency, moved to Philadelphia, drove an MG convertible, hated the snow, and packed up for San Francisco sometime around 1960. He met his partner sometime around 1966 and they lived together for 10 years or so, until Gordon died. Around 1990 Bill became head of HP’s corporate library and he retired I think in 1996. I'm a bit hazy on the dates but that sounds about right. I do remember him joining a gym around then and I remember laughing at the thought of him lifting weights. He was more of a Christmas present wrapper and bon vivant than a jock. In any case, Bill was a good man. And had a good run. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz My friend Bill, on a good day in 2011, four years after his dementia diagnosis. It's awful to start a post with a mention of illness, but that was Bill's story for the last 18 years. Bill was a kind, sweet, and truly gentle man. A veteran. A librarian. An art lover. And the central figure in an oddball gaggle of gay and straight men and women. Bill and I became friends 47 years ago, when we both worked for HP. We commuted together, vacationed together, celebrated holidays together, went to the symphony together, and mourned the loss of mutual friends together. He came to my wedding. I went to the funeral of his lover. In 2007, I became Bill's trustee, power of attorney, medical agent, caregiver, and worrier-in-chief. I was also Alexander - the name he eventually called everybody who cared for him and kept him safe, in his home, for all these years. On Christmas Eve, at 10:28 p.m., Bill died. Today, two friends and I have phone calls to make. So begins the long process of wrapping up. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/787/062/639/003/991/original/2925c6543dc7bc2f.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Better watch out. With ultrawides in general, when people are placed near the edge of the frame, you get a taffy effect. With fisheyes, it's not just the edge: the center of the frame is also a problem. You know how they say a camera adds 10 pounds to a person? A fisheye adds 150. Portraiture requires consent. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Can't help you with wide-ange fisheye for landscapes and sky... but I've used an 11mm fisheye (16mm equivalent on a full frame) on a freeway shoulder. The reason: to bend what would otherwise be boring straight lines and make the result more interesting. The fisheye's swoopy effect was most obvious in the foreground and seemed to fade out as distance increased. So it was all about bending close objects. In your scenario, I imagine the coolness would apply similarly - say from bending nearby trees and buildings. Add: I enjoyed shooting with the fisheye most when I wasn't taking more obvious, symmetric, snout-on compositions. That's just me, I think. And yes, as you said, with all wide angles, objects in the distance are rendered even more distant. For an aurora, that's not so bad since it's sky-filling. But a distant mountain or structure... ooof. https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/767/622/674/654/590/original/49946518cb84726f.jpg https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/767/622/713/057/194/original/8a72e65da65906b7.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Just three more days. #photography #StreetPhotography https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/764/657/045/432/794/original/2dfa1cb956c9a189.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Alt text: stunning couple in formal attire wins life's lottery. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz This is stunning - homemade perfection! I've seen their break rooms. Academics 🙄 npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz You already have seen the first 20 or so responses... so I'll just reinforce them with mine. You are much loved around here and you have been anything but boring. You may think you have been repetitious but you know something: so is real life. None of us are endlessly fascinating. Not even the late, great David Bowie, in or out bed. Reading between the lines, you may find it a real chore to post multiple times throughout the day. Given life's other priorities, I'm guessing that's true. So be proactive: slow up and maybe check in once a day or less when things become overwhelming. Whatever you decide though, everyone will respect your decision. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Excellent news to wake up to. Stay warm and dry up there. We have a wet day... But the really damp stuff starts Friday and rain will be our norm through the end of the year. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Yep 👍 I have captured trails of sparks from sparklers before, but I didn't expect to see bubbles bursting. Fun! I have another shot I'll post later this week, with bubbles high in the air. No motion, just bubbles drifting above the buildings in Christmas tree in Union Square. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Well this was interesting... and totally unexpected! The camera caught what my eye did not see: streaks of soap bubbles flying out of a bubble machine, shimmering, sparkling, and popping like champagne bubbles (but you can't call them that because they're not from the province of Champagne). Cool, huh? 1/40th of a second. Notice there are no trees... which is a funny thing I discovered last night, confirmed by thumbing through the 1500 photos I've posted in the last 3 years (https://sfba.social/@BobHorowitz/media). Out of all those photos I've posted - all of them - only a dozen or so have significant trees in them. Sure, there's an odd branch or two. But there are no trees. Am I a monster? An orc? #photography #MUNI https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/724/972/507/400/849/original/18c896a0a91ed131.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz I never knew it was a thing. Happy Sunday to you. Currently very foggy here and it looks like we're heading into what may be 10 days of rain, starting Wednesday. I'm guessing you're in for the same, since the North Coast is usually a lot wetter than we are down here. December 8th, 2025, 3:58 p.m. This was a joint effort with my husband Chris (studiochris on Mastodon). After spending an afternoon in Half Moon Bay with Jeri Dansky, just before heading home we set my camera for a one second exposure at f/22... and, while I drove through the tunnel, Chris balanced the camera above the dashboard and kept the shutter firing, which actually makes Chris the photographer and me the guy in the chair who says Engage. After we got home, I tried several methods of merging the best 8 or 9 shots in post... but I ended up liking this single exposure best because it was sharper than any of the muddier merges. #Photography https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/701/885/619/556/134/original/d9e51a5405dc7bd2.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz The garbage recycling facility. A long time ago I learned that if you want to attract men on hookup sites, you have to offer a little something for every type of guy: a selfie in sports gear, a picture of your butt, some feet for the feet guys... something masculine, something feminine, something with leather, something furry, something sparkly, and maybe a picture of you with a whip. (I also learned you should never, ever, post a picture of yourself wearing navy blue because - like my friend Bill used to say with lint brush in hand - navy picks up everything except men. But that's another story.) Anyway, if you want to be a popular photographer, shoot a bit of everything. Sooner or later someone will see something they like, start a conversation, and follow you (home). Kidding :) Love you guys. #photography #StreetPortrait https://files.sfba.social/media_attachments/files/115/555/200/503/532/814/original/b86fcb8f4865ec39.jpg npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz Ha! ❤️ this. npub1qxf4uj73el7yjjqcee6d5xfp56fl996hfahxxllh9wrvnh38z7jsa9dmnr Bob Horowitz she has him wrapped around her little tail, literally.
