@nprofile…pfuj I agree that this is an important question - because yes, if he could just do his usual "fuck you, try to stop me!" thing, he would have, which implies that he doesn't have the power to resist this court order.

Google has no idea how they make money - they literally think it's magic.
It's pro'lly true they think they can serve more ads if they keep the user on their site, but that disregards the entire ad network. Moving around the web users are served literally hundreds of ads - there's simply no way to cram all of that into one Google page & they'd be worthless if there was.
- or rather more worthless; GGL has been diminishing the value of ad spending for years already.

I'd like to comment on the common "AI is just a tool" thing: I'm a woodworker by training & that means a lot of machines - but almost every craftsperson knows how to do their job with hand tools, or "lesser" machines.
Similarly, a writer can write without a text editor - just as well, only slower.
If loss of a tool = loss of your skill & knowledge, then that tool isn't an asset, it's a liability. You're signing over your ability to do business to whoever sells & maintains that tool.

OK, look, I love Hank Green & SciShow but this is fucking abysmal. First of all, the parroting of #AI marketing speak that computers are thinking & reasoning - no, they fucking aren't! Also, no, AI didn't happen in the last 3 years; they're building on decades of research & development.
Then, the Amodei quote that this is unprecedented in tech, ignoring that WE DON'T KNOW HOW THE FUCKING BICYCLE WORKS! We're still not entirely sure how planes generate lift! 🧵👇

So... Kyle Hill is a shill for nuclear now?
I've watched quite a few videos from this guy, he's actually a really good science communicator - but for the past few months it seems like half his output is praising the blessings of nuclear power 🤔
Far as I can tell he's still basically scientifically accurate, but about half his videos being either directly or obliquely about how great nuclear power is, that seems like a lot to me...

Well, as a testament that I am, in fact, making an effort, I just tried to create an account there, because it seems to be the only place to look for help for some of my #SwitchToLinux issues.
Yeah, that failed. Just can't create an account.
Because GitHub fucking sucks.

@nprofile…998y is exactly right - the opposite of fascism is solidarity. There's an incredibly important detail here, which you might spot if I say that the expression of solidarity is community, or even that the market alternative to capitalism is commerce.
These answers to the two-pronged problem of fascism/capitalism are not -isms.
Things like solidarity, community & commerce aren't belief systems, they're something we DO, WITH each other, not TO each other.

I keep getting pushback on this but I'm gonna to keep saying it: We're NEVER going to free people from the clutches of Big Tech until we realize & respect that most computer users by far aren't actually computer users.
They don't give a shit about computers. They don't want to see a single line of code, ever.
They don't care about customization, "distros" or versions. They don't care about GUIs or desktop environments.
They just want to get to what they're doing; work or play.

The complicity of the world press in the atrocities in Gaza - and, lest we forget, numerous other crimes of the same kind, i.e. ones where friends & allies of The West™️ target brown people - cannot be overstated.
We know that popular outrage changes policy. The idea that news is a privately operated entertainment & advertising commodity has cost more lives than open war over the past couple of decades.

So, supermarkets install self-checkout & fire all but one employee & now that one employee also has to support the self-checkout, which fails every 4-5 customers & now there's no reason to get in line at the self-checkout because the bottleneck is the same employee & they're going to service the regular checkout line first => Overall checkout time = slower = fewer sales.
Checkout bots aren't free to install or operate & I'm pretty sure that equation wasn't in the sales pitch.
