He seems to like creating futurist settings with genetic engineering. The first book of his I read was Mickey 7 set in the far future on a new colony on an icy planet. It's set in the near future and custom genetic engineering packages are common but are also causing a lot of problems in society. There are some differences that seem mostly to be to explain what Murderbot is and why it's so weird.
