Since I was invoked I’ll toss in my 2 sats 😉 y’all are both right. Most people will not gain enough zaps to make an income equivalent yet (like you can on TikTok) so trying to sell people on Nostr based on zaps alone is futile. HOWEVER people are really interested in being able to easily exchange value for value on social media, and it’s attractive to people that Nostr has zero barriers to entry to get monetized (unlike on TikTok where you have to have a thousand followers to start a shop and 10k followers to get paid per thousand views).
So yes, zaps are nifty and fun and certainly part of the overall Nostr value-add, and no, they aren’t the main reason people stay here. People stay here for the freedom and the community.
The two things in my mind that we need to work on to continue to attract users is: searchability and shareability. When content is easy to find and easy to share, it can go mega viral. Wherever there is viral potential, people will go there. That’s how TikTok became a billion user platform.

You know how farms have “pick your own” days for fruits and whatnot? Without the algorithm, JK Rowling’s tweets wouldn’t have even made it over to people who didn’t follow her. When celebs (in this case blue checks) are given priority / promoted, people who want attention will try to leverage the celeb posts more via replying, trolling, etc. It’s why verification status should only be used as a measure of trust, not a special treatment.

You know what absolutely cracks me up? The insane reactions to the Terrence Howard and Joe Rogan interview. 🤣 Like all the sudden folks with marketing majors are up on some intellectual high horse calling vibratory physics “word salad for people who skipped science class” - they’re truly offended, armchair diagnosing him as psychotic, etc. 🤣 some people have gone so far as to make whole videos trolling his ideas. I just need to know why are they so mad? Why do people feel legitimately offended/insulted by an idea that has been around for at least 100 years? 😔 We said goodbye to my angel Rocky today. He took a turn for the worse this morning and went on to be with his buddy Bella in the big dog park in the sky. 🐾

But is the liability trade off worth it to them?? Centralized control also equals centralized liability - just ask Discord who is being sued currently. Nostr puts accountability and liability back into the users hands - just like Gmail can’t be sued for someone sending nefarious emails through their client. Protocols-over-platforms is better for these tech giants in a lot of ways, but especially to avoid coercion and litigation.
