So Microsoft's #recall apparently stores screenshots of *everything* you do on your pc (web surfing, online banking, porn) as well as text extracted from them completely unencrypted on the harddrive.
This isn't production ready software. Not even alpha. This feels like a quickly cobbled together proof of concept that should never leave the lab and make it to an end customer's machine.

We just had a lightning strike VERY close by, probably less than 100m away, because thunder and lightning came at the same time. And boy was it loud!
Immediately afterwards, my DSL router was dead. Even after I disconnected the phone line it seemed to be stuck in a boot loop and wasn't even reachable via Ethernet. Totally dead.
Then, after about half an hour of this it suddenly came back, and now that the phone line is plugged in again it works as if nothing happened. I don't get it. I thought for sure something inside was fried, but apparently not...

Does anyone have experience with the #retroflag gpi case? This one right here:

I got it the other day and installed recalbox on it. It works perfectly, except the safe shutdown... when I turn the power switch to off, the system starts to power down but the power is cut before the system is fully shut down, which isn't ideal.
So I'm thinking I need a way to tell it to stay powered on for a few seconds longer before it turns off, but I haven't found anything about it online so far. Can anyone help me out here?

No, not the miyoo. But it was 65€ including the Pi, and the seller even left the batteries in, so it was a really good deal.

Has anyone ever tried replacing the lithium cells in a 20 year old laptop battery?
I think replacing the cells should be possible (they are standard 18650), but I'm worried that the BMS controller needs some kind of calibration to work correctly...
Anyone have any experience with this?

Is anyone maintaining a web presence in more than one language (English and their native language probably)?
If so, how do you manage this? How do you decide what to post in which language?
I tried setting up my website in both languages and translate every post to keep them in sync, but that's a ton of work... looking for inspiration on how people do this.

On April 13th and 14th the "Retro Computer Festival 2024" takes place at the Heinz Nixdorf Forum (museum for information technology) in Paderborn.
I went there two years ago and was very impressed both by the retro exhibitions and by the museum in general, it's very well curated and presented.

I generate my website with hugo, and every time I want to change something on the site I realize I've completely forgotten how hugo works and have to relearn it... maybe I should switch to a simpler framework 🙄

I live in Germany and I get more and more sad and upset in recent years when I travel through the country, because there is virtually no untouched nature anymore. Everything is altered by man in some way, rivers are canalized, forests are monocultures of just one kind of tree, there's roads, highways, railroad lines everywhere... and we're still building more!
I just checked and only 0,6% of Germany is considered wilderness. It's depressing.

Turning our cities into "car-friendly" hellscapes in the 50s and 60s required a huge undertaking with bulldozers and heavy machinery, but now turning them back into places friendly towards humans would require something even more daunting: courage.
And unfortunately, there isn't much to be found it seems 🙄

I recently got an old iMac G4 without a logic board, and I'm thinking about putting a mini PC inside to make it working again...
Has anyone attempted this before? I know there are videos and tutorials about it, but does anyone have first hand experience with such a project?
I think the biggest hurdle will be to get the display working, if it even still works...

I think the pain will go away once the skin gets more used to it. I started wet shaving again recently after a couple of years without, and the first few times my skin was also really raw afterwards, then it got used to it.
A good after shave (without alcohol) does wonders ;)

On the latest firefox on Linux it loaded fine.
Out of curiosity I booted up Windows 2000 where I have Retrozilla installed, which is probably the most modern browser available (afaik), and unsurprisingly the images don't show up.
Then again, I don't think this is going to affect very many people ;)
