I must be in the minority, because I was born preferring old technology. I found some old computer mags when I was young, and I read through those things like they were a bible

2026-04-16 01:49:31 GMT

Wait, hold up, you can steal all of someone's money, from a locked iphone, in mere seconds, and have been able to for years and years and years,
And I'm supposed to believe that mobile OSs are more secure than desktop Linux or BSD?

Using modern software is not rocket science.
Not even rocket scientists can get it to work.

Seriously, how are people ok with this? Have we forgotten what art is all about??

It's essential that we all remember, laws don't actually have to be enforced.
There are lots of laws that aren't, and very little legal requirement for "law enforcement" to actually enforce laws.
So any time a law is enforced, it's either by choice, or out of stupidity.

I've been seeing more and more people say that, assuming software wasn't _mindbogglingly_ unoptimized, _most_ people would be _totally_ fine with a [486 through core 2 duo, depending who you ask] and everything newer is pretty much unnecessary for the _majority_ of tasks,
And let me just say, I'm all for this. Genuinely _love_ this trend. Agree 100%

2025-12-25 06:26:39 GMT

So, my parents got me a really awesome tool set, name brand and everything, so like, wow, jaw dropped, I was not prepared for this

Ah, so a bit like NAT routing?
A lot of people see it as a stopgap until IPv6 becomes ubiquitous, but it's actually insanely handy for security and network layout/separation. (I will die on this hill)

I've been reading up on, and it looks like DNS over HTTPS _does_, but then TLS actually provides it's own unencrypted path that can be snooped, although it looks like there have been efforts to encrypt that as well, although there appears to still be debate as to how well it's been done. And plus there are still IP addresses, though there's debate about how well the sites you visit can really be tracked through those these days, and I think I'm too deep plzhlp

2025-12-12 06:33:13 GMT

- reply

I'm not entirely sure how self hosting a DNS cache would really increase security and privacy, because my cache would still need to source it's info from the usual sources in the usual way

Everything from signed certificates to VPNs just shift the trust

2025-12-12 06:15:49 GMT

I don't really trust it, though. It's another step towards the death of the internet as a tool by the people. Assuming that dream isn't already dead completely

2025-12-12 06:07:29 GMT

- reply

Well, the biggest issue for the vast, vast majority of the internet is the URL. HTTPS does not fix DNS

2025-12-12 03:51:54 GMT

- reply

Because it adds absolutely no security to the majority of the internet. Only stuff like banking websites, shopping carts, and secure chat apps benefit at all from going over HTTPS instead of plain HTTP

2025-12-12 02:03:50 GMT

Hear me out...
I've been thinking about it, and the S in HTTPS is completely 100% superfluous on the vast, _vast_ majority of websites

2025-11-29 07:01:17 GMT

I want snuggles :(

2025-11-27 01:46:34 GMT

My main risk vector is from snooping family, with almost no risk what so ever from any kind of skilled attack. No encryption or strong passwords necessary. Having them not be able to look through my open windows, even just a tiny snippet, is my sole concern :P

2025-11-22 03:02:11 GMT

- reply

Right, except for two things. First of all, I think for home users, switching windows to hide stuff from someone looking over your shoulder is probably one of the single most important things for privacy. And second of all, it speaks to _woefully_ unprotected video RAM, which I would argue is genuinely very bad for security.

2025-11-22 01:42:19 GMT

Listen,
Until computers stop showing my desktop, task bar, and whatever I had open, for a second before showing the screen lock whenever I wake them up, and stop showing snippets of other windows for a second when I switch windows,
I absolutely refuse to take cybersecurity seriously.
Because this is an absolute bare faced _joke_
I simply will not trust obscure hypothetical fixes to hypothetical scenarios I can't see, when stuff I can see and actually matters to me is _blatantly broken_

2025-11-17 01:03:20 GMT

vpns are honestly mostly "useful" if you don't want the immediate network to see the url. Otherwise, they really don't do much imo

It's interesting seeing even Unix from the 90s, going to install software from retail CDs, "Missing dependencies"
Ahhh, the familiar pain

2025-11-10 01:56:35 GMT

I'm honestly getting really sick of the idea that everything in computing must be temporary and fleeting because "security"
I refuse to accept that I must accept crappy UI changes, the elimination of backwards compatibility, deprecation of hardware, and forcing all dev efforts to be perpetual or fade away, just because "oh, well, we just realized this attack is _technically_ possible, and we're gonna make that _your_ problem now"
I say _NO_ to temporary computing.

Changing the clocks twice a year:
Pros:
None.
Cons:
Literally death.

2025-10-10 18:00:58 GMT

Hear me out...
Motherboards, even in laptops, should always have as many RAM slots as physically possible.
Because a few years down the line, used low capacity RAM sticks are pennies on the dollar, where as used high capacity RAM sticks cost their weight in gold.
It's an _intensely_ frustrating experience trying to double my RAM and having to pay at least four times as much.

**Don't worry, I'm not gonna kill myself any time soon**
But, I really do want to kill myself. Like, as an aspirational goal. I _want_ to die, and _I_ want to be the one who kills me.
Maybe that's why I'm always sabotaging myself in everything else I want to do. Because having friends and having family and being known, all gets in the way of it. And I can't kill myself until all of that is gone.

Unfortunately for me, both sound editors and automatic volume control engineers are both so beyond incompetent it would be comical if it wasn't ruining media.

2025-09-29 17:57:33 GMT

Automatic volume control has always sounded like a great idea. Stop loud noises from blowing out your eardrums while keeping dialog audible. I never understood why everyone hates it.
Until I finally heard a common automatic volume control.
It still plays the loud noise just as loud, but then turns the volume of the following dialog down to inaudible levels.
...Right, I forgot, we're dealing with humans here. I don't know why I thought we could make something that actually works.

There does seem to be this strange divide in the tech world, between people who want computers to be easy to use, but block people from truly understanding them, and people who want everyone to _have_ to truly understand them to be _able_ to use them.
Surely the valley is also fertile?

It's crazy to see how much my opinions have changed since I was a child.
I hated touch screens. I even hated flat panel displays. I thought everything should be a CRT. I loved outdated computers and thought they were so much better. I was such a luddite.
These days, however, my opinions have changed completel- oh wait no, No, my opinions have changed shockingly little.

I've been wondering to myself recently, how can I possibly prefer proprietary mobile OS's over Android? Old OS's like BB10 and PalmOS were proprietary. Android is open source. What's wrong with me?
Well, I've decided, first of all, it's totally reasonable to prefer them over iOS, which I absolutely do.
Second, it's a sign I prefer Linux over Windows because it actually _works_, not just because "woo, freedom! Libre! I'm morally superior"

2025-08-17 01:22:45 GMT

The fact that children are made through a process that isn't child friendly is honestly really gross and kinda sad.
What's _really_ sad is that a desire to have sex and a desire to care for children _are not linked what so ever_ so the people most likely to have children are honestly kinda the people who most shouldn't. Lest the first sentence rear it's ugly head.
This is sure one disturbing planet we've got here.

Found a new thing I hate:
"Set of one" in online listings for things where multiple of the item are generally required.
Does that mean it's one full set? Or is it just _one_ item, and you'll need to buy multiple "sets of one" to have an _actual_ set?
If the former, screw you for making things more confusing than they need to be. If it's the latter, fuck you, you don't deserve nice language or full explanations you evil fuck, you know what you are and what you're doing.
