It must have been a conifer of some sort, I think. About 8 inches down I could see the branches preserved in the trunk from when the tree was young, complete with bark. From a distance this seemed to be a big busy colony taking lots of pollen in to a double brood. Closer examination showed the colony was not in the hive but under it. We couldn't examine them further as the comb will be built hanging from the underneath of the floor and to do so would seriously disrupt the bees. I popped him over in some damp earth beneath some trees.
