Me: "Did you know that if you're in the vacuum of space, your lungs continue to do gas exchange, but because there's no air they just strip all the oxygen out of your blood? You've got something like 12 seconds before you're unconscious from hypoxia."

End-stage capitalism is *really good* at breaking apart communities.
It dismantles the commons and replaces it with venues where one is expected to make a purchase.
It moves people more online where they can be exposed to advertising and selective information, rather than in-person gatherings.
It takes all the socially isolating aspects from an individualic society and makes them profitably worse.
I don't follow an organised religion, but I'm seeing more and more people returning to them because many of them appear to provide resistant communities.
I can't say if organised religion is presently good or bad, but I get the hunch that ritual, shared beliefs, and common culture are all important for enduring communities. However I'm not sure I fully grasp the role that organised faith plays in community bonds, I simply don't have the experience there.
If you have experiences in faith intersecting with community, I would genuinely love to hear them.

Holy smokes, I've found the *only* good thing to have come out of the NFT bubble.
Zoë Roth, better known as "disaster girl", sold an NFT of her famous meme image for almost half a million dollars, which she used to pay off her student loans.
The best part is she and her family retained copyright over the image, I presume because NFTs don't actually mean anything.

On the 4th October, 1936, the British Union of Fascists had planned a march to the East End of London.
Despite the petition of East Londoners, with 100,000 signatures over two days, the Home Office declined to ban the march. Authorities refused to allow a counter-march by the Ex-Servicemen's Movement Against Fascism, because the fascists had organised their march first.
On the day, around 3,000 fascists turned up for the march, protected by more than double that number in police.
The fascists and police were resisted by over ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND anti-fascists who erected barricades, chanting "They Shall Not Pass". Police attempted to dismantle the barricades and clear a path for the fascists, and were pelted with rotten vegetables, and the contents of chamber-pots thrown from upstairs residents.
There's a damn good reason why fascism had a hard time establishing itself in the UK; I'm pretty sure it wasn't the government nor the police.

Hey friends, especially #Naarm #Melbourne friends:
After years of sorting through what feels like an endless amount of possessions and grief, I'm almost at the stage where I can put dad's western suburbs house on the market.
The gotcha is, I've no experience with real estate sales at all. There are a million real estate agents out there, and while they all seem nice, I've no idea how to sort the good from the bad. There's lots of advice out there, but it all seems to be written by the agents themselves.
Any advice (including recommendations) on picking an agent is appreciated.

I didn't think my kids cared about my radio projects, but the last time we went camping I caught one of them explaining to a new friend how all the nodes talked to each other and passed on messages, how we could use them to make sure we don't get lost, and how we could even make them beep if we needed someone's attention. The talk finished with a tour of the solar powered BirdBox.

Today I fixed a television out of spite.
One of the most common faults with modern TVs is a backlight failing. These are cheap to replace, and the tools to test them are cheap to obtain.
But the effort to get to the backlights? Oh my!
A TV that was made to be repaired would have a separate pane for backlights you could slide out, or some other access mechanism.
But today's consumer TVs require you to disassemble practically everything to get to the backlights. That means getting to them is a huge investment in time (for self-repair) or money (if you go to a repair shop and pay for labour). TV companies know that most people will just buy a whole new TV.
So today I fixed the TV out of spite. Not because it was rewarding, or for environmental or financial concerns (although all of these are valid). I fixed it because the company that made it did not want it to be easily fixed.

The last two days have been mostly overcast, and my $8 solar panel is only able to catch the sun for a fraction of the day, but everything on my #Meshtastic trash node seems to be holding up fine.
Of course, it's on CLIENT_MUTE, so it's not exactly transmitting very often, but this bodes extremely well for when it gets promoted to full mesh participant when we go camping.
I'm going to install a little 5V DC-DC converter and a USB socket on it as well, so we can slow charge devices off the battery when its got juice to spare.

Hey folks, the collapse of western civilisation isn't necessarily bad; we've plenty of evidence that civilisational collapse ultimately improves the health and lifestyle for the vast majority of people. But the thing we really need to survive that transition are strong, solid communities.
Western civilisation goes to extraordinarily lengths to isolate us. Isolation makes us easier to control. Makes it easier to extract our labour. Makes us more dependent on the state, and less able to imagine a world in which we help each other.
Get to know your neighbours. Find ways to share tools and skills and knowledge. Encourage hobbies with enduring value: growing your own food, fishing, foraging, repairing. Make sure your neighbours know how to find you if they need help, and vice versa. Not all your neighbours will be on board at first, and that's okay. Just let them know you're there.
Collapse takes time, you don't have to have it all figured out now. Just start planting the seeds, yeah? ❤️

Figured out why my laptop wasn't suspending!
My old laptop had an nvidia card, and while the packages associated with that were removed, some files were left in `/etc/systemd/system/systemd-suspend.service.requires/` for nvidia-resume and nvidia-suspend services.
Since these no longer existed, and they were marked as 'required', systemd wouldn't actually run the suspend.
Removing the dangling symlinks and running `systemctl daemon-reload` solved it! 🎉

Update: Suspend works if I run `pm-suspend` from the cmdline. It also resumes fine when I press the power button to wake it up.
So the laptop is fine, the kernel is fine, the BIOS is probably fine. I don't know why it's being difficult, but that's enough progress for now that I'm going to try and do something fun before bedtime.

Oops, spoke too soon. Not everything is working perfectly; it no longer suspends (but it did before the Ubuntu upgrade).
My spider sense tells me it's WiFi related, because when it was suspending the WiFi didn't work, and because the new Ubuntu 24.04 WiFi system makes a big deal in syslog about how it's getting ready to suspend, which feels like it's guilty and trying to manufacture an alibi.

I've been trying to take a more active interest in the cultures of my ancestors. Not just my parents' and grandparents' generations, but going back to traditional practices of centuries ago. In my ancestry, that means Northumbria and the Danelaw, what it now Northern England and a bit of Southern Scotland.
One thing in particular which seems to have been lost is a *lot* of dishes, especially peasant dishes, which had to be cheap and nutritious, and often cooked in bulk.

White culture honestly feels like it's just been "capitalism culture" for a long, long time now. White festivals (eg Christmas, Valentine's Day) are often heavily focused on consumption, and some emerging white festivals (eg "Black Friday") seem to be *solely* about consumption.
A lot of our culture and heritage has been pushed aside because it's not profitable. I've no doubt that leaving people feeling empty is *great* for selling them things as well.

Okay, my tiny little Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) board arrived. I'm assuming my discount solar panel doesn't do MPPT by itself because while it will top-up a battery fine, it won't charge a depleted one.
This makes sense. A depleted battery is charged with a constant current, and if the charger tries to pull too much current it dips the voltage on the panel and nothing happens.
With MPPT the panel should just provide as much current as it can without a dip.

I've been trying to understand how antennas work, and it's all deep eldritch shit. Make sure your antenna is an exact fraction of the length of the silent whispers you wish to hear from the void. Make sure the antenna has a solid plane to bounce the whispers off, but somehow you can get away with just a couple of wires that suggests where a solid plane would go. Make sure your cable isn't a cursed length, which attracts unwanted attention.
RF engineers are heckin' magicians.

Aha, looks like I need Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) doodad for charging off a solar cell, and I doubt my $10 panel already has one integrated.
If I understand correctly, an MPPT doodad lowers the current draw from the panel to maintain enough voltage to charge; otherwise the battery charger can try to draw too much, which drops the voltage, and one gets nowhere.
A random blog post recommends a CN3791, which are only a few dollars, so I shall continue investigating

Today I learned that East German chemists created almost unbreakable consumer glassware in the 1970s. They produced hundreds of millions of drinking glasses, expecting significant exports to the west because the product was just so much better than regular glass.
Those exports did not happen. If you're a western marketer of glassware, you *want* your products to break so you can sell new ones.
Outstanding job, capitalism. This is why we can't have nice things.

Hello! I watch a lot of YouTube of the format "person with a special interest talks enthusiastically about their special interest".
I've channels for civil engineering, blade sharpening, mortality, fire ignition, knot tying, urban planning, neolithic tech, and more.
However, most of these channels are hosted by men. I would like to fix this!
Have you a favourite YouTube channel that focuses on knowledge transfer, that's not hosted by a man? Please leave a link in the comments below. Thanks!

Oopsies! Mozilla just removed the "does Firefox sell your data?" question from their FAQ, along with their promise not to.

Almond seems to have settled in nicely as a shared community animal friend. I know of at least three households (including my own) who have been making sure he has food, water, cuddles, and companionship.
He's much less anxious now, comes running over to see me wherever he's around, and purrs with delight at getting cheek rubs and head kisses. More importantly he follows me less now, because he's feeling much more comfortable about his domain and his homes.
I love him.

It also means that you shouldn't trust "the law" to keep the state in check if those in power can ignore it.
Almost every dictator knows that to stay in power, they need the support of those who enact state violence. If your own military and police wants you gone, they're going to look the other way when the rebels storm the gates, or will set themselves up to be the next dictator.
I really, really wish everything in state politics didn't come down to violence, but ultimately it does.

Breaking laws without consequences happens a *lot*. Privileged people get let off for things that would send the oppressed to jail.
We rightly see people pushing back against that, and usually the state opposes that pushback, sometimes more violently than others. The state protects those in power.
Where all this is going is that when things get bad, you'll have to think about how you're going to deal with state violence, because the law means nothing if your state is corrupt or doing a coup.

The legal system tries to codify when and how the state is willing to use violence against its own people. That's not an exaggeration, the monopoly on "legitimate" violence is ultimately what makes something a state¹.
If someone is so powerful they have no consequences for their actions when those actions are "illegal", they are de facto above the law.

I wish I didn't have to remind you of this, but the ultimate test of whether a law is upheld is whether the state will use violence to enforce it.
If I don't pay a parking fine, will that money be taken from me by force? If I'm able to resist that, will I find myself injured, incarcerated, or hurt in some other way?
If not, if I can just ignore the consequences, the "law" means nothing.
Conversely if the police beat me illegally, but suffer no consequences, that illegality also means nothing

Got to explain to Mr 10 that one of reasons why higher education used to be (almost) free, and now isn't, is because charging for education overwhelmingly favours the rich.
Free education runs the "danger of producing an educated proletariat", which is trouble if you're trying to run a country that doesn't favour the masses.

: I used to laugh at asthma cigarettes, until I discovered they had radically different ingredients to regular cigarettes.
In particular, plants high in anticholinergic alkaloids such as stramonium and belladonna would be used. Inhaled anticholinergic drugs continue to be used today in the treatment of asthma, although not as a first-line treatment.
Having said that, one of my recipes includes adding arsenic salts to the cigarette, which seem of questionable benefit.

People keep asking me how long it takes to make the things I make, and I usually have no idea. I create string and baskets as a fidget activity, usually while travelling or doing something else.
Anyway, I actually timed and measured a piece of string last night. This was green, unprocessed New Zealand flax, done entirely by feel in the dark. Eight cubits in two hours, or about two metres per hour.

This is Almond. He might have other names, but he's Almond to me.
On sunny days, Almond is found in his front yard, which I frequently walk past. He's very friendly and loves pats.
Yesterday I had errands to run. As I walked past Almond's house, he loudly proclaimed that he saw me, and I apologised I had to keep moving.
Afterwards I came back, and he came up to me and very loudly complained that my behaviour was unacceptable. He did not let me pat him.
Cats are awesome.

I had to deal with a freshly unboxed Android phone, and the flipping *clock* app, that was installed by default, came with a privacy policy.
I discovered this because the clock started crying that it couldn't work properly without Google Play Services.
I don't care what the privacy policy was for. I am tired. A clock app does not be into a position to have any privacy policy more involved than "we collect and report no data".
The clock is now disabled.
I am so tired of this.

Living in a society where everyone is constantly trying to scam you if exhausting.
Sure, there's the regular scammers we think of. The ones who call or email you and pretend to be your bank, your telco, your long lost family with an inheritance for you.
But then there's all the legal scamming. Phones that come with built-in advertising IDs. Pop-ups with tiny close buttons. Anything where you have to "opt-out". Wherever bullshit Adobe has thought up this week.
It's exhausting.

Hey friends, just a reminder that if you're reading online foraging guides, then go for the ones published before 2020, or whenever it was that Large Language Models became popular.
You can also use "before: 2020" in many search engines to improve results in general.
AI slop is annoying at the best of times, but you *really* don't want to accidentally consume it when it comes to things that may impact your health.

Today I learnt that two little dots over a vowel in English are used to indicate that vowel is pronounced separately, and not merged into the previous vowel.
Examples include words like naïve and Noël, and names like Zoë and Chloë.
This use is considered archaic now¹, but given how hard English spelling is, I'd be pretty happy if it were to reënter daily use.

Today at the Repair Cafe one person brought in their laptop that was running slowly, and the repair was literally removing all the shit bloatware that Dell had bundled onto it.

At the end of the 19th century, economists were arguing that poverty was caused by there being too many people for the surrounding land to support. Evidence for this was that one saw almost no poverty in frontier towns, and plenty of poverty in large cities. Limited resources could only be stretched so thin.
Henry George, in his book "Progress and Poverty", called BS on this. Due to specialisation of labour, he argued each additional person meant there'd be *more* to go around, not less.

Here's my most time-consuming coil #basket. Made from yucca fibre, with one continuous piece of two-ply twist string. It's extremely tough and hardy.
Added the handle later (yucca string and a small piece of bone), with some help from my #BasketWeaving assistant.
