Sharkey breaks something and your solution is that Mastodon must fix something.

It is not a Mastodon bug, because this was also tested against Misskey, too.
This is an incompatibility with Sharkey.

2026-07-23 14:14:36 GMT

⚠️ Sharkey is no longer compatible with Mastodon and Misskey.⚠️
As a fork of Misskey, Sharkey hasn't been keeping up with recent updates to either Misskey or Mastodon. Because of this, people using newer versions of Mastodon and Misskey can no longer vote in polls hosted on Sharkey sites.
The current version of Mastodon is 4.6.3 and the current version of Misskey is 2026.7.0-beta.4
If your Fedi site is running an older version of Mastodon or Misskey, you may still be able to interact with Sharkey. However, that’s only because your instance is also behind on the current codebase.

If you are running a version of either Misskey or Mastodon that is more than a year old, I strongly urge you to reconsider your reasons for not upgrading.
This low-effort exploit (see screenshot) can be executed on Mastodon 4.0.x through 4.3.x. If you are still running Mastodon 2.x or 3.x, the situation is significantly worse.
⚠️ This isn't just a Mastodon issue; it affects Misskey too. If you are using a version of Misskey older than 2025, you have simply been lucky so far.
For context, the current version of Mastodon is 4.5.11 (with 4.6 beta 1 available), and the current version of Misskey is 2026.5.4 (with 2026.6.0 available). There is no better time to upgrade than right now. ⏳
In my opinion, the Fediverse has been incredibly lucky. Most of you have only had to deal with the occasional bot or script kiddie trying to spam your site. However, leaving your software unpatched exposes you to much more severe threats.
Frankly, as someone who used to manage online forum communities, I don’t understand the reluctance to upgrade. You aren't just leaving yourself vulnerable — you are risking the security of the hundreds or thousands of users who have placed their trust in your ability to manage the platform safely.

🚨 Upgrade to Mastodon 4.5.11 🚨
This version not only includes an important security update, but also a patch to prevent a Denial of Service (DoS) attack.
⚠️ Regarding the DoS exploit:
A malicious actor may not fully commit to a complete DoS attack, but instead slowly drain resources from your site, increasing your server costs over time. 💸 💰 😈
If you're not running 4.5.11 (or newer), you're at risk. ⚠️

A quick follow-up with additional details:
Mageia Linux is a stable, slow-release distribution. Version 10, which I recommend, is currently at RC1 (see URL). It also offers a testing rolling release called Cauldron.

Mageia Linux (v10).
It uses simple RPM packages, just like Fedora, but it is not based on Fedora, Red Hat, or even openSUSE. It is a completely independent Linux distribution, forked from the old Mandrake Linux project decades ago. It is very user-friendly, has no A.I., and its digital sovereignty is based in France, Europe, rather than the United States.

2026-06-01 04:26:09 GMT

🚨 Upgrade or be hacked. 🚨
There is a "hacker" group (script kiddies) targeting Mastodon sites that are not yet running Mastodon 4.5.10.
Version 4.5.10 fixes several security vulnerabilities that are relatively easy to exploit and were discovered in earlier versions of Mastodon.
If you're not running 4.5.10 (or newer), you are at risk. ⚠️
If you're using a nightly build of Mastodon, make sure you're running one that was released after the release date of 4.5.10. And yes, I said release date, not version number — earlier 4.6 nightly builds do not include the security patch. ⚠️
If you're delaying the update because you're running a modified version of Mastodon, consider whether maintaining those modifications is worth the security risk. ⚠️

Seeing the larger picture and not just a small fragment of the pie is fundamental. If you only look at the one gear that’s turning, you’ll never understand why the entire machine is broken. We are living in a world of specialists who know everything about their "fragment" and nothing about the reality it belongs to.

2026-04-27 22:17:11 GMT

I've never had a problem with admitting that I am wrong, because I see it as an opportunity to grow, learn, and change. I wish more people shared that mindset — instead, we have these people who, when given factual information, will double down and triple down, insisting their "logic" is undeniable.
For example, six years after the COVID-19 pandemic, we still have people claiming it was and remains a hoax. It is the same mindset that argues we've never been to the moon, the world is flat, and human society is 2,000 years old or less, despite all the facts that disprove their delusions.
You'd think the Internet, this wonderful tool granting people virtually unlimited information and knowledge, would uplift society.
And yet, it has largely become a hall of mirrors. Instead of using it to find the truth, people use it to find the one other person on the planet who agrees with their specific brand of delusion, effectively insulating themselves from reality. It has proven that the bottleneck for human progress isn't a lack of information — it’s the ego. We haven’t used the internet to sharpen our minds, instead we’ve used it to weaponize our biases.
The Internet has mostly served to prove that you can lead a person to data, but you can't make them think.

Corporations when they have the financial resources play the long game.
You think people actually like the complicated and costly policies of Adobe? Of course they do not.
But many schools, including universities are given free and discounted Adobe access. Those people then go to work where business originally were also given special access years ago.
Now you have all these people hooked on Adobe, no matter how costly or annoying it becomes. Fearful that switching will mean they'll be excluded somehow.
These types of corporations play the long game. And what seems insane today, is standard tomorrow.

Actually, it does make sense.
Apple Computer, was losing money rapidly, but gave schools free or discounted Apple PCs for decades. People said that doing so made no financial scenes.
Today, all those kids are grown and use Apple devices at home.
(Honestly, I didn't see a PC in a school until I was in high school.)
Microsoft is going to shove Microsoft 365 onto users, including OneDrive. Your kids will see this. You'll use this because your work will require it, and your kids will see you use it whenever you bring work home. And just like Apple, they're already trying to give this to schools too.
The same way Google saved Chromebooks during the pandemic, giving free and discounted Chromebooks to schools, and now a whole generation wants to use Chromebooks.

So Firefox isn’t even a privacy-focused browser anymore!

Because they always blamed everyone else — always.
It was always a browser extension’s fault, a hardware fault, or the user’s fault. Meanwhile, Chromium works — that’s it — it works.

Does anyone remember how they first said Windows 11 would not require TPM 2.0? Or how, when it was finally officially announced that TPM 2.0 was required, Windows Central tried to tell us how great this was for security?

Windows 12 is due to come out this year.
1) Your computer does not meet the system requirements. Again.
Why?
Your PC will need a dedicated NPU — a specialized processor designed to handle AI tasks. So, if you recently bought a new PC just to use Windows 11, Microsoft wants you to go shopping again.
2) It will finally, unfortunately, introduce a subscription model.
That's right — you read that correctly. They want you to pay and keep paying to use the computer you just bought. Technically, you won’t own your computer while Windows is installed.
NOW is the time to try Linux. Stop waiting. Don’t make excuses. Don’t even complain — we all knew this day was coming. Either try Linux, or admit you’re Microsoft’s little bitch.

I have seen a draft of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech.
It was only a draft, so it may not reflect the final message he delivers tomorrow.
But the draft implied that we might be leaving NATO, citing how NATO “wrongfully” threatened us when we demanded Greenland. It further suggests that Europe is not serious about global defense. The speech wraps up similarly to last year’s address, criticizing what our regime sees as Europe’s so-called “censorship” of free speech. 🤦

Vivaldi Social was one of the first sites to update to Mastodon 4.5.
My post is intended more as a general notice for anyone still using an older version of Mastodon. There are quite a few sites running very outdated versions of both Mastodon and Misskey. In fact, recently, a Fediverse site was hacked because it continued to use old software. I hope that with this release, more people will avoid the mistake of ignoring the update.

2025-11-06 15:29:16 GMT

Are you an administrator running Mastodon?
⚠️ Upgrade to version 4.5! ⚠️
Older versions of Mastodon contain known security vulnerabilities. In addition, outdated instances may not properly display or communicate certain types of content (such as quotes) introduced in the latest version.
To ensure the security, compatibility, and convenience of your users, you should upgrade your Mastodon instance to version 4.5 as soon as possible.

So, you’ve actually just supported an argument I made a while back — that the Fediverse needs AI. I first made this point during the major spam attack that hit the Fediverse last year.
Here’s why: if the goal is to grow the Fediverse, registration can’t be invitation-only. Right now, Fediverse software isn’t as user-friendly as mainstream platforms like Reddit, Twitter, or Facebook. Making it even more exclusive would only slow growth further, or even stop it internally.
I say this from experience. I remember how online forums tried to handle spam, bots, and trolls — by making registration harder. Some required manual review or moderator approval. That worked for a while, but it also made those communities less welcoming and more difficult to join. Over time, most forums faded away.
At the same time, keeping registration completely open invites bad actors, trolls, and spam. It’s a tough balance — too open, and the space gets toxic; too closed, and it stops growing. That’s exactly where AI could help: by automatically handling spam, filtering bad behavior, and letting real users in without creating unnecessary barriers.

I understand that many people want to help — what’s happening in Gaza is truly awful. But you'd be wiser to donate through trusted organizations like the Red Cross or, as someone else suggested, UNICEF, rather than responding to random direct messages.

In one photo, from Facebook (my job, where I work), we had a woman claiming to be a 36-year-old mother of two children, ages 4 and 7. She spaced out the URL in her post, hoping it wouldn’t get flagged by spam filters (it did). The very next day, someone on the Fediverse posted the exact same message, with the same URL. The only differences were that they used a different name, a different profile photo, and claimed to be a 19-year-old girl.

But issues also range from admins who should never have been admins. The type of admins who ran old community forums and who are drama queens and who freedom of speech is whatever they agree with (cannot say, for example, you dislike both Donald Trump and Joe Biden).
I like the software, Sharkey, but I do find the general use in practice to be discouraging.

A personal observation that I dislike is it seems many of the Sharkey instances experience issues.
It is a shame, because I do like Sharkey. But one of the reasons I kept hopping from one instance to another instance is I would join these so-called well-known instances, only for them to have some issues.
Mastodon is "OK". I dislike that you cannot move your post with Mastodon. I have a backup of all my content on my local PC which I can port into any Sharkey instance, but Mastodon moving means starting over.
