Asking a question of my fellow humans:
Does anyone know of any interesting research or even anecdata with regard to the idea that releasing new software features too quickly is a form of bad UX?
I was thinking about the notion of "agentic" dev resulting in features shipping much faster and *why* that is even assumed to be a good thing. What if it's a bad thing—particularly for established apps with a solid userbase? Do we "want" rapid-fire feature development in that way?

Hero worship—especially in the field of programming—is so weird.
Like, someone on the Platform Which Shall Not Be Named mentioned Linus Torvalds “vibe coding” some kind of audio visualizer tool in Python and this is used as evidence that “it's all over.”
Huh?
I have immense respect for everything Torvalds has accomplished.
I also don't care one iota what he does in his spare time. How does that invalidate my beliefs?
So weird!
Stop worshiping people.
*You shouldn’t even care what I do.* 😉

I’m so angry with what’s in today’s news here in America I am having trouble stringing complete sentences together.
All I can do is say I #StandWithMinnesota and Governor Walz, with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, with all of the legitimate authorities on the ground protecting locals and investigating this horrific murder. I stand with the brave protesters there and around the country in this grim, grim moment.
The U.S. is truly at a crossroads. We haven’t seen such schism since the Civil War.

2026-01-07 17:03:43 GMT

OK so I've been talking about The End of UX for a while now.
I want to shoutout the @nprofile…26hz account for *not* ending UX. They are engaging with some pretty heated feedback regarding LLM-related UI and having a genuine dialogue. I may be pretty much on the side of the heated feedback, but I also want to give credit where credit is due.
The End of UX would be to say "we'll design this however we want and you'll just love it” rather than engage. FF isn't doing that, which is commendable!

2026-01-06 22:01:54 GMT

Lots to love about #Codeberg right now.
#Zig moved to it. LibreWolf is using it. Many #Fediverse projects use it including the FEP process. #Fedora set up their own Forgejo instance (the underlying software for Codeberg).
Now #Gentoo is switching from GitHub to Codeberg!
I've migrated most of my projects there as well.
Every one of these stories is a win for #OpenSource and a middle finger to #Microslop, which is a win-win all around. 😊

Please write your docs yourself, using your own human brain! Thank you. 😊

@nprofile…tnyw Far too many people look at “Prohibition” and use that as an excuse for not prohibiting things, when that's literally what making laws is (or is supposed to be). Prohibiting behavior that society has deemed to be anti-social and detrimental to the common good.
If society deems genAI-all-the-things to be sufficiently detrimental, we can prohibit it. We should. And we will.

(It is also bizarre for DHH to be quoting an LLM in this matter, but I digress)
Tech communities are *already* fractured. There is no "big tent". Instead, what happens is a slow brain drain. Troll-friendly spaces built on top of offensive edgelord culture inherently degrade over time…a shrinking pool of expertise as those with diverse perspectives & backgrounds go silent.
DHH is king of a noisy yet dying world. And ultimately the ecosystem always suffers.

“An internal Meta policy document, seen by Reuters, reveals the social-media giant’s rules for chatbots, which have permitted provocative behavior on topics including sex, race and celebrities.“
My psyche feels utterly coated with grime after reading this.
Not am I stupefied by the sorts of interactions deemed “acceptable” here, but the very notion that billions of people are simply allowing a handful of dudes to make these sorts of decisions makes my brain melt.

Here it is.
I'm laying it on the line. Because I really do believe that the future of the Internet is a bifurcated one.
We are barreling towards a network completely centralized and mediated by automated "thinking machines" and the powerful elites who control them. We MUST resist. And we have the power to do so.
Solutions won't come easy, but every step in the right direction matters.
Please consider these words carefully and share with a friend. ✌️

For a long time after the aquisition GitHub operated almost like a subsidiary. And it had a CEO because that's what CEOs do, run companies.
Now it's clear Microsoft wants this to become Microsoft CodeHub and the "GitHub" of it all is merely a brand name. I suppose such a shift has been in the works for a while now, but I still find it shocking.

I hate to be "that guy", but Spotify *is* evil, and it's been evil for years. Thank gawd their asinine attempt to destroy podcasting and replace it with a proprietary paywalled content silo failed utterly…but they continue to wreak havoc on the beleaguered indie music industry (the recent explosion of slop being yet another reason in a long list of reasons).

Anyone have any good HTML templates (or just visual examples) they can share for adding a CV to a personal website?
I'm thinking of making a slashpage (/cv) on my site so I can direct folks there who just need a quick summary of what I do. I don't want to gunk up my main About page.
TIA! ☺️

Welp, it's official.
I had to let go of a client today because they are *all-in* on the slop machines…Claude to be precise. They intend for it to be integral to all code going forward.
I told them I can't do it. I won't do it!
Which leaves me in a real bind because the one major client I have left simply isn't able to pay all of the bills. A real strain on my finances…yikes. 😕
Anyhoo…good news is I'm ready to contribute real senior Web Dev expertise to your next project! 😅 #FediHire

LLMs are now a culture war.
The rollout of these slop machines across enterprises is *not following the typical pattern* where individual users first adopt new innovative tech and then it eventually (reluctantly) becomes company policy.
This is the opposite!
Bosses love all the hype and want to go full steam ahead, while the workers are resisting and making clear the grave danger of doing so.

(I honestly never thought that sentence would be uttered by my lips ever again!)
The reason is there is a *massive* vibe shift going on on the platform. People are turning against genAI in droves. "Thought leaders" are getting pilloried in the comments. The "brand" has become toxic.

@nprofile…2r82 @nprofile…383v It's likely because this function is processed more like a data structure, so when the end value of `result` is calculated it already knows how to access the referenced variables.

The fact that so much of the MAGAsphere has been triggered (gosh, they're such snowflakes aren’t they) by the very existence of a successful socialist candidate like Zohran Mamdani is proof positive this is the *exact* kind of energy we've been desperately craving in the Democratic Party.

Hot take:
The best way to plan a trip is to do as little planning as you possibly can.
You can literally just exist in a place, feel the vibes, and let the winds of fate dictate where you happen to end up next.
That is the best way to #travel.
The vast majority of my favorite moments in life are directly the result of **not planning**.

@nprofile…240e While I wouldn't say that's a panacea, the thing I appreciate about the Free Software movement is that it does concern itself with (some of) the ethical implcations of how code is written, used, and distributed. OSS is apparently about practicalities only, and in fact you get swatted down if you dare to mention anything about ethical production or use.

It's not just in the AI space. I routinely see people make moral judgments that some technology is good merely because it is "open".
Nope.
I'll do you one better. I would rather use a proprietary code product that was developed ethically with ethical end user intentions, than use an open code product that was developed unethically with unethical end user intentions.
Open is not synonymous with good.

2025-06-27 14:41:59 GMT

Goofy propaganda like this is why I consider the "pop" open source movement to be bereft of a true moral center.
Ultimately, it doesn't really matter if the "code" is open if the training data is based on theft and the eventual use cases are unethical. 🤨
Imagine touting "open" weapons blueprints or "open" narcotics. Sure, the code/blueprint/recipe is open.
So????? Don't make it right.

🎞️ I really wanted to make sure I got a chance to see “Ballerina” before it left the theaters, and I’m glad I did.
I’d heard mixed early reactions to the film, so I wasn’t sure if I’d really enjoy it. In particular, some folks thought the first act of the film was slow and there was too much setup.
I have no idea what they’re talking about!
I *needed a reason* to care about Eve Macarro (played to perfection by Ana de Armas), and this film gave it to me in spades.

Just a reminder that AI doesn't eliminate jobs.
People do.
People make the decision to eliminate jobs. AI does not make those decisions, nor does its porported capabilities force anyone to lose their job.
Hold the *people* accountable for making the decisions to fire or not hire human workers.
