I was such a ride to get there, but the "colored lights" revamp is now working pretty great: it can mix various lights of different colors, and the whole thing is blended correctly so far!
Can finally consider working on other aspects like level design now 😭

This end of year recap comes with an update of the engine: Ceramic 2.1, and it’s new cross-platform shader language.

This week, I have been trying to add colors to the custom lighting system of my game. Not gonna lie: it's not an easy task, and I'm far from done yet, but it's looking promising ✨

Got some feedback (which I agreed with), suggesting not being able to trigger the impulsion while jumping was frustrating, so changed it. That change alone is going to affect level design a lot, but it's probably for the best!

For those curious about this "running a framework/engine inside Unity" thing, I wrote an article a while ago about it and how it was done:

Next version of Ceramic (haxe 2d framework) will support exporting to Unity 6 using latest Universal Render Pipeline + Render Graph, which will make sure that target stays well supported in the foreseeable future

Why using ANGLE?
On Apple devices, it addresses the deprecation of OpenGL. Metal is the way to go, and ANGLE allows just that without having to change existing rendering code that is GLES-compatible!
On windows, it also allows to run your GLES code on D3D11, which often work better than GL too

2025-05-01 17:52:11 GMT

I've set up a Github repository to build Google ANGLE binaries for Mac (Metal), iOS (Metal) and Windows (D3D11) automatically.
These are going to be used with my engine Ceramic (using GLES3 for rendering), but other engine or game developers might be interested too ⬇️

Moving around different screens is now working. Needed time to get it right: no reloading between screens, avoided simple fade-in/fade-out transitions in favor of properly timed scroll to maintain spatial awareness, even when level sections don't perfectly fit the screen.

Separated player light data from main lighting to prevent artifacts on the wall. These were caused by vertex shader interpolation. By isolating player data from the rest, no interpolation occurs between systems, eliminating those artifacts for good :)

can’t speak for the rest, but as far as Ceramic is concerned, it’s open to anyone and it is not aligned to rightwing ideology as suggested here, quite the opposite. The haxe discord ban is unfortunate (and not my decision as I don’t own that server) but I’m sure it could be undone if you wish to return. Take care

Low resolution pixel art games are a bit like books, in a sense that they give a lot of space to imagination, compared to ultra-realistic games and movies. One of the many reasons both of these mediums are still relevant nowadays #books #pixelart #games
