Sometimes I do, yes. I occasionally have to. It depends on which ideas come to me first, or how the process is going at the moment. However, I will add this as well: it depends on the WIP. Every project is different, so there's no proper way for me to decide how the arrangement will go, how things will be written, etc. It's different every time.

I would *never* tell them who I was, but yes, I'd love to meet Eleanor and Alistair. He's a kind man, in every sense of the phrase, and he embodies humanity. That's rather ironic, really, considering he's not even human (AKA a mortal). He's imperfect but he cares for others, and he always tries to do right by his friends, servants, and the locals in Moray. He's made mistakes in his past, but he never lets them hold him back or define him. As for Eleanor, she's the sort of woman I'd love to have as a friend. She's strong, the motherly type, and won't take any shite from the scary vampires in her life. We all need an Eleanor in our life.

My country is at war, things on the homefront are just as bad, and everything feels wrong, but there's nothing I can do about it, so I'm gonna sit my arse down, watching some Doctor Who, drink that cup of tea with a bit of sugar that I usually deny myself because of the calories, and relax for a while. I might even read or write. It's snowing outside, so it's not like I can even go for a mind-cleansing walk. That's all. Because self-care in the immediate future will help bolster you for the long-term. Little things matter just as much as the big ones.
My neighbor was talking about his run-in with the frozen water Gestapo, and I proceeded to tell him about what happened to me last week or whenever it was, because time has zero meaning to me anymore, and that was a whole bunch of trauma and terror coming back again. Let's forget about that for a while, shall we?
Yeah, I'm gonna make that sweet cup of tea, read or write, maybe watch some Doctor Who, and quiet my mind for a while. Give me some peace.

I've had two texts/calls today about people I know going into hospice. One of them is my great-aunt who I'm VERY close with, and things have been very tough for her lately. It's been a horrific day. And on top of that, one of my nana's best friends since childhood passed away as well. She got the call from his daughter early this morning. It's been a shit day and I'm ready for it to be over.

The year is 1890. Oil lamps were common in homes, often made of brass or glass, and were used for functional lighting. Gas lighting was also prevalent, with the introduction of gas lamps in homes, marking a significant shift from candlelight to gas.
The transition to electric lighting was still in its early stages, with only a few homes equipped with electric lights. (Also of note, of course, Alistair's castle doesn't have electricity.)
Overall, though, the lighting was a mix of traditional and emerging technologies, with gas and oil lamps being the most common sources of light. It's pretty easy.

#WritersCoffeeClub 2.21 — Share an unexpected critique you’ve received. Why did it surprise you?
This is a *really* good prompt, but I can't think of anything in particular to write in response. I will say that I've had so much help from friends here on Mastodon in our writing community. Every little bit helps. However, I can't think of anything super surprising or unexpected. Whenever I've received a bit of help with that kind of thing, whenever I've gotten some critiques, it's because I've asked for it.
Edit: Something finally came to mind. Someone told me that I should change the way I write, but she didn't understand that the POV I use is actually a thing. She was very critical and confused. It actually almost had me changing the way I write. This happened years ago but it still kind of sticks with me, sometimes.
I enjoy writing either of these:
Third Person Omniscient POV: The narrator has full knowledge of all characters' thoughts, feelings, and the story's past and future, enabling a god-like perspective. While less common in modern novels, it is used in classic literature and genres requiring a broad narrative scope.
Multiple POVs: Involves shifting between different characters' perspectives, often across chapters or scenes. This approach allows for a broader story scope and deeper character development but requires careful structuring to avoid “head-hopping” and maintain reader clarity.

Fantastic question. Let me list a few of the tropes.
• Second-Chance Romance: Two former lovers reconnect after a long separation and have another chance at love. Here Fenella and Alistair have a chance to try again.
• Lovers to Friends to Lovers: This goes along with the above trope, of course.
• Fake Dating/Relationship: Our two characters pretend to be in a relationship for convenience, only to fall in love (or back in love again). Fenella and Alistair have to pretend to be back together for her sake.
• First Love: They're vampires, older than you could ever know, and he's never loved anyone else, only Fenella.
• Grumpy Old Men: This one is self-explanatory, and it perfectly describes our dear Alistair.

Alistair (in my mind, anyway) has a very specific face-claim. It's #PeterCapaldi. I'll need to mention his features and stuff, then I'll get to the eyes.
Alistair's face: I see hawkish features, laugh lines and wrinkles, kind eyes, soft expressions, and curls that are graying yet still brown at the nape of his neck. When he's in a dark mood, on the rare occasion, his expressions are pure stone and even harder to read. The eyes will match.
Alistair's eyes: His eyes are interesting. All vampires have varying shades of color depending on their mood.
When relaxed, when they're a soft, pale green. Here: "His irises were a washed green, as if the color had been stirred with smoke and sunlight." Or this one: "His eyes were green pools, edged with shadows that made you wonder what he’d seen."
When angry, they're a thunderous, crackling silver or gray. Here: "His gaze was smoke, soft but dangerous, curling into every space you left unguarded." Or even this one: "He blinked, and it was thunder held back, a promise of something breaking open."

Oooh, let's talk about #TheCityOfOpulence here, from the #DigitalDystopiaSeries. Every single thing about the setting where this series takes place surprised me, especially in the first story, which I eventually have to finish posting on AO3. Everything about it came as a shock. It developed as the story grew and blossomed. Things changed. Areas became bigger. Business came to be. Battlegrounds made themselves known. This entire setting came from a homebrew (original) #TTRPG I ran, something #cyberpunk and dystopian for my players, and that's also where my characters came from. They were NPCs that I created. As I began writing the story itself, attempting a novel that slowly became a series, things only grew all the bigger. I love love love this setting to death. Ethera is a beautiful, terrifying city. Citune is a gorgeous planet with tons of lore. This is my favorite setting I've *ever* created, hands down.

Good morning, by the way. My Aunt Laurie is in surgery now. Fingers crossed. Without going into detail, she had a full reconstruction surgery and there's a bit of scar tissue that needs to be fixed (yet again), but the team of nurses and her surgeon take very good care of her. She's close to them at this point.

@nprofile…a4x5 Thank you. This is kind of just how it is now, and I don't mind it. I tried the gel and the cortisone shots and nothing really seemed to help my knee much. KT helps so much, though. I can't recommend it enough. I've been using it for years.

Update: I'm home, and Esmeralda came home with me. The doctor ran tests, did an x-ray, and then did an ultrasound. She told us to bring her home and enjoy the last few days with her, and gave us some new meds to help her feel better.
Long story short, there's a medication that she's on that could cause fluid buildup. It was a one in a million chance, but it happened to my baby. She has fluid in her lungs and in her belly. We'll be bringing her into the vet tomorrow or Wednesday. Say some prayers for her, please.
It's so hard being a kitty mama, sometimes. I've spent the entire day, not even exaggerating, spending time with her. I've cried all day and I'm worn out.

I have a vet appointment for 4:00 today with Esmeralda. This is absolute hell. I feel sick to my stomach, and I can't stop crying my eyes out.

On another note, and I'll make this very brief because I've been an emotional mess, Monday morning is the time to call the vet. Esmeralda took a turn for the worse. She isn't doing okay. It's probably time to say goodbye. Labored breathing, pudgier tummy (could be cancer, if that's what she has), being uncomfortable and lethargic, not having an appetite, lungs sound weird, etc. I can't stand the sight of my little baby obviously in distress and pain, but my vet's office isn't open on the weekends. It's been hell.

I do, only because the story isn't about me, it's about the characters. Sometimes a story calls for something that I might strongly dislike. It isn't a perfect world, after all. As much as I love *reading* cozy fantasy, it isn't actually the genre that I'm writing within.

@nprofile…cjf6 Not really, but I could see why you'd say that. They're a realtor company, and they get rid of spirits from homes so that they can sell the homes for them as well, and at a good price. The main character is an exorcist. She puts ghosts into human vessels, men who work for her, just so that she can exorcise them and then send them off to the great beyond. It's a really interesting concept.

How about if he *joined* a business? In my mind, I can't imagine him starting a new business, but I *can* imagine him working for Caden's art business that he has. He would make paintings for him to sell, seeing as he's already an artist but it's only a hobby of his.

Sometimes it's the plot. More often than not, it's the characters. They'll come to me first. A lot of my characters were created for either the purpose of TTRPG stuff (tabletop roleplaying games) or roleplay stories (which is just collaborative writing that I do with friends or my girlfriend), so I've already written a plethora of stories with these characters. The plot comes to me later if I finally decide to knuckle down and write a long serial or just a novel with them. C'est la vie.

Stark features, seafoam green eyes, tall and lean. When he’s angry, his eyes will turn a stormy, steely gray (which is the way with vampires, their eyes changing color). His hair is curly and silver, his eyebrows are dangerous and expressive, and he looks every bit the gentle, charismatic, charming vampire that he is.
While he always tries to do his best, he might sometimes fail at it. He isn't perfect, and would never claim to be, and he hates whenever he gets things wrong. He's a writer, an artist, and can play piano, so his long-fingered hands are often moving about as he speaks. He's expressive in every way. He can be rather silly when he wants to be, incredibly loving and tactile, and yet rather ruthless when the moment calls for it as well.

I do. For instance, rain can certainly set the mood for a particular chapter or scene. Weather creates mood, develops characters, and drives plot by acting as a metaphor, antagonist, or reflection of internal states, and it's a tool that I absolutely *love* using within my stories. It plays a key part in Wings of Quiet Longing at some points.

Oof, okay, I can't answer this one. That's the first time that's ever happened. Not only does this story take place in 1890, but the majority of my cast are supernatural beings, either vampires or werewolves, and that means their families are loooooong dead, sorry to say. I will, however, say this: Duncan's mother would be so disappointed in him. Then again, she felt that very same way while she was alive and he was still a mortal as well, so let's keep that in mind.
