Last Notes npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve Pro Tip: If you kill someone, don't write a memoir about it. NYTimes: A jury convicted Duane Keith Davis, 63, in the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed Mr. Shakur, a rapper at the height of his popularity. Prosecutors cited portions of Mr. Davis’s disavowed memoir. npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve There are 3 separate things to consider along with their lags, interactions with each other, and various feedback loops: 1. Greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere 2. Heat in the planet's systems (air, land, water) 3. Climate impacts. As far as the atmosphere goes, the bulk of the human CO2 buildup is going to last for 300-1000yrs after we stop emitting without hacking the carbon cycle for active drawdown. That's one lag. As long as the excess greenhouse gasses remain, heat is being actively trapped/added to the planetary system. Much of that heat goes into the oceans. (as does much of the CO2) but with deleterious impact of it's own: acidification, ecosystem impacts, weather & climate impacts, etc. So stopping emissions doesn't stop global warming. That's another lag. And since the heat continues to build up - especially in the oceans (which will take a long time to be undone), climate impacts will continue to worsen. Another lag. Then there's the interactions between all of those. for example, far too many people are unaware of the hard temperature limits of photosynthesis - the principle means by which plants draw down CO2 from the atmosphere. The laws of physics and chemistry mean that photosynthesis stops working once the ambient cell temperature reaches 100-110F in many plants (including most food crops). And then there are the feedback loops. e.g. excessive heat evaporates water resulting in water vapor in the atmosphere. Water vapor is itself a very potent greenhouse gas resulting in more heat buildup in the terrestial system. Or rising global temperatures mean less snow and ice, so the albedo changes resulting in more heat absorbed by the planet, which is why arctic regions are warming 2.5x faster than equatorial regions. All of these then impact the climate and weather in ever increasing and unpredictable ways like the ocean currents and jet stream slowing causing ever more drastic impacts. While all this sounds dire, I do have hope and will now talk about things we can be doing that will have significant impacts on atmospheric CO2 levels which need to be reduced before anything can get better... npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve I'm not sure how Weight Watchers survived past the 70s with recipes like this... https://media2.ai6yr.org/media_attachments/files/116/140/112/083/745/065/original/eadd2004f3d53ca3.jpg npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve The judge released the petitioners. Fantastic work! npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve And the meat of the article to tie into the headline: The federal surge into Minneapolis reflects a series of mistaken MAGA assumptions. The first is the belief that diverse communities aren’t possible: “Social bonds form among people who have something in common,” Vance said in a speech last July. “If you stop importing millions of foreigners into the country, you allow social cohesion to form naturally.” Vance’s remarks are the antithesis to the neighborism of the Twin Cities, whose people do not share the narcissism of being capable of loving only those who are exactly like them. A second MAGA assumption is that the left is insincere in its values, and that principles of inclusion and unity are superficial forms of virtue signaling. White liberals might put a sign in their front yard saying IMMIGRANTS WELCOME, but they will abandon those immigrants at the first sensation of sustained pressure. And in Trump’s defense, this has turned out to be true of many liberals in positions of power—university administrators, attorneys at white-shoe law firms, political leaders. But it is not true of millions of ordinary Americans, who have poured into the streets in protest, spoken out against the administration, and, in Minnesota, resisted armed men in masks at the cost of their own life. The MAGA faith in liberal weakness has been paired with the conviction that real men—Trump’s men—are conversely strong. Consider Miller’s bizarre meltdown while addressing Memphis police in October. “The gangbangers that you deal with—they think that they’re ruthless? They have no idea how ruthless we are. They think they’re tough? They have no idea how tough we are,” Miller said. “They think they’re hard-core? We are so much more hard-core than they are.” Around this time, Miller moved his family onto a military base—for safety reasons. The federal agents sent to Minnesota wear body armor and masks, and bear long guns and sidearms. But their skittishness and brutality are qualities associated with fear, not resolve. It takes far more courage to stare down the barrel of a gun while you’re armed with only a whistle and a phone than it does to point a gun at an unarmed protester. Every social theory undergirding Trumpism has been broken on the steel of Minnesotan resolve. The multiracial community in Minneapolis was supposed to shatter. It did not. It held until Bovino was forced out of the Twin Cities with his long coat between his legs. The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they’re the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesive—because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about “Western civilization,” while armed brutes try to tear it down by force. npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve The Atlantic has had some good #Minnesota pieces recently. This is their latest. MINNESOTA PROVED MAGA WRONG The pushback against ICE exposed a series of mistaken assumptions. (gift article) https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/01/the-neighbors-defending-minnesota-from-ice/685769/?gift=6qi1zpVjfanikscENJ8rz00xy4yJQvyhvh6q6llygfc Instead, what they discovered in the frozen North was something different: a real resistance, broad and organized and overwhelmingly nonviolent, the kind of movement that emerges only under sustained attacks by an oppressive state. Tens of thousands of volunteers—at the very least—are risking their safety to defend their neighbors and their freedom. They aren’t looking for attention or likes on social media. Unless they are killed by federal agents, as Pretti and Renee Good were, other activists do not even necessarily know their names. Many use a handle or code name out of fear of government retaliation. Their concerns are justified: A number of people working as volunteers or observers told me that they had been trailed home by ICE agents, and some of their communications have already been infiltrated, screenshotted, and posted online, forcing them to use new text chains and code names. One urgent question among observers, as the videos of Pretti’s killing spread, was what his handle might have been. Trump-administration officials and MAGA influencers have repeatedly called these activists “violent” and said they are involved in “riots.” But the resistance in Minnesota is largely characterized by a conscious, strategic absence of physical confrontation. Activists have made the decision to emphasize protection, aid, and observation. When matters escalate, it is usually the choice of the federal agents. Of the three homicides in Minneapolis this year, two were committed by federal agents. “There’s been an incredible, incredible response from the community. I’ve seen our neighbors go straight from allies to family—more than family—checking in on each other, offering food and rides for kids and all kinds of support, alerting each other if there’s ICE or any kind of danger, npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve Omg. lol The Onion: ICE Agents Wait At Edge Of Delivery Table To Deport Newborn npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve trump saw something he didn’t like on the socials and flushed his phone down the toilet npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve NOAA: An S4 severe solar radiation storm is now in progress - this is the largest solar radiation storm in over 20 years. The problem is inverter size vs system voltage. People are running 3500W and even higher wattage inverters on a 12V battery bank. That's 300A of current!! Not only do the wires need to be massive, expensive, and hard to negotiate around curves, but at those current levels you'd need to constantly monitor the torque on the connections and any heat build up in the wires. Every connection is going to have some resistance. The higher the current the greater the voltage drop/heat build up through that resistance. This then causes thermal expansion/contraction which will loosen those connections resulting in even higher resistance and heat. Note the positive feedback loop. There's very little room for error at such high current levels. the same process can happen with a poor crimp. 12V is fine up to 2kW. 24V to 4kW. Jones was staying in Room 428 at the Residence Inn by Marriott in North Portland and had called down to the front desk to report a malfunctioning toilet. Christopher Frison, a chief maintenance engineer at the hotel, arrived at Jones’ room about 5 p.m. on July 27, 2020, and knocked several times. Frison also called out “maintenance,” gave his name and waited, holding a plunger, he testified in court. That’s when “Jones opened the door ready to defend himself and his room,” according to U.S. District Judge Adrienne Nelson’s 22-page opinion. According to Frison, Jones was wearing a sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head when he “swung” the hotel door open, reached with his right hand behind his back and suddenly pointed a handgun at Frison’s chest. He said Jones held his gun in two hands, both arms outstretched. “What the hell are you doing? What is going on?” Frison said he screamed. “All I could see was the white of his eyes. I could see the anger in his face. I wasn’t there as a threat. I was there as a maintenance worker.” Frison testified that Jones pointed the gun at him for four to five seconds before uttering twice that he “f----- up.” The judge found that Frison’s lawyers didn’t need to prove that Jones intended to shoot Frison or cause him physical injury. It didn’t matter if the gun was loaded or not, according to her opinion. It was clear Jones “intended” to place Frison in fear of imminent harm, she ruled. “Simply put, that Jones opened the door quickly and pointed a gun at plaintiff is sufficient to establish defendant’s liability for civil assault,” Nelson wrote. npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve It's a weird parallel command structure. Amid a deepening ecological crisis and acute water shortage, Tehran can no longer remain the capital of #Iran, the country’s president has said. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/irans-capital-has-run-out-of-water-forcing-it-to-move/ The situation in Tehran is the result of “a perfect storm of climate change and corruption,” says Michael Rubin, a political analyst at the American Enterprise Institute. “We no longer have a choice,” said Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian during a speech on Thursday. Instead Iranian officials are considering moving the capital to the country’s southern coast. But experts say the proposal does not change the reality for the nearly 10 million people who live in Tehran and are now suffering the consequences of a decades-long decline in water supply. Since at least 2008, scientists have warned that unchecked groundwater pumping for the city and for agriculture was rapidly draining the country’s aquifers. The overuse did not just deplete underground reserves—it destroyed them, as the land compressed and sank irreversibly. One recent study found that Iran’s central plateau, where most of the country’s aquifers are located, is sinking by more than 35 centimeters each year. As a result, the aquifers lose about 1.7 billion cubic meters of water annually as the ground is permanently crushed, leaving no space for underground water storage to recover. #ClimateEmergency npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve Say it neighn't so. npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve A celebrity horse?!? 😂 npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve I've only seen Mint in news results relatively recently. Nearly all the plant-based products CR tested had elevated lead levels, but some were particularly concerning. Two had so much lead that CR’s experts caution against using them at all. A single serving of these protein powders contained between 1,200 and 1,600 percent of CR’s level of concern for lead, which is 0.5 micrograms per day. Two others had between 400 and 600 percent of that level per daily serving. The lead levels in plant-based products were, on average, nine times the amount found in those made with dairy proteins like whey, and twice as great as beef-based ones. Dairy-based protein powders and shakes generally had the lowest amounts of lead, but half of the products we tested still had high enough levels of contamination that CR’s experts advise against daily use. npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve as an interesting aside, the first movie to have Lakota spoken with subtitles was Dances with Wolves. The half life of nuclear waste ranges from 10,000 years to 1 million years. The HALF life. It is deadly without active containment requiring human intervention. When climate change collapses our systems, who is going to maintain that active containment??? If humanity manages to survive, how are they to deal with it with far less resources? Will they even know what it is? The time scale of this ticking bomb is so staggering that the Department of Energy had to develop a task force to try and figure out how to warn future generations. There was no written language 5,000 years ago. 1 million years ago, Neanderthals walked the earth. If humanity and even other forms of life manage to survive the climate crisis, they will likely be wiped out by this ill-fated ineffectual attempt to mitigate it - currently every bit of nuclear energy that comes online immediately goes to new consumption by data centers hosting AI craziness. Sodium Carbonate is the 6th most abundant element on earth 2.6% of the earth's crust. It's a very low impact to mine or extract - even from seawater. And the batteries can be made without copper or other rare, expensive, or toxic materials. The lack of toxic materials means it's much cheaper & easier to recycle (although maybe the financial incentives won't be there - at least initially) Compare that to rare, environmentally costly to mine lithium which is only 0.0017% of the earth's crust. Battery-grade lithium carbonate costs range from $10,000 - $11,000 per metric ton vs. $600 - $650 per metric ton of battery grade sodium carbonate. But these are the best bets supposedly. https://brightside.me/articles/8-fruit-trees-you-can-grow-from-the-seeds-and-pits-of-your-own-fruit-498010/ https://www.bhg.com/gardening/vegetable/fruit/how-do-i-plant-seeds-from-grocery-store-apples/ A search will reveal many similar instructional articles for various fruits. npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve A number of cities nationwide should have free tree programs, and sometimes those include fruit trees. I'm only familiar with Los Angeles where we have: https://lacity.gov/highlights/get-free-trees-planted-your-home-or-business https://archive.is/oN9Eb (LA Times paywall busted sources for LA & Orange Counties) Last I looked into it, LA's program really limited the number of fruit trees though, which is rather sad. I think it was one per household. npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve Might I suggest the various crowdsourced fruit maps be shared when you address Guerilla Gardening. They're not it per se, but do tend to go hand in hand. A few hours later he announces a 90 day suspension of tariffs. The markets go way up from the significant low his tariffs brought them to. Late Wednesday White House communications adviser Margo Martin posts a video on X showing Trump receiving Charles Schwab, founder and co-chairman of Schwab asset management, in the Oval Office. "This is Charles Schwab," Trump said, introducing the 87-year-old billionaire to champion car racers. "He's not just a company, he's actually an individual! And he made $2.5 billion today," Then he points to a guy next to Schwab & says, "and he made $900 million." #InsiderTrading npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve A friend had told me 90% of Tesla parts were sourced in china and I had done a google search and seen a number of links confirming that. Those articles are talking about the Teslas that are made and sold in China. Teslas models made in North America range from 60-75% parts made in the US or Canada. This has a content breakdown for most car models: https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/2024-10/MY2025-AALA-Alphabetical-10.30.24.pdf npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve With good reason. 90% of the parts that go into Teslas that Trump hawked on the White House lawn a month ago are sourced from China. 104% tariffs would be a death knell for the company. npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve It’s ok to water some during the heatwave, but just a light watering early in the morning. This is less about giving water to the roots and more about evaporative cooling. Avocado trees will need more frequent watering because of their shallow roots. And maybe a sheet or shade cloth if they have lots of new growth to protect npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve This #socal #heatwave that is coming by Friday is way too early and as such will be really hard on some plants. Succulents will be fine, but any woody plant with new growth will lose a lot of water to transpiration. Heatwaves aren’t supposed to come until the new growth has barked over to keep water in. Give thes plants and trees a deep watering NLT Wednesday or Thursday. Like 5 gal each. Enough to sink deep and remain available as surface moisture evaporates. Mulch will help too. When the leaves start wilting it’s already too late. But if they’ve been prewatered they’ll recover. #landscaping npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve Doing spring cleanup at one property… cut out last year’s Mexican sage stalks. Trim any white sage gearing to throw bloom stalks into the walkway (and make sage wands out of the cuttings). Thin a lot of the succulents. Remove lower leaves from foxtail agave and candelabra aloe. Give it a deep watering ahead of the coming early heatwave. Oddly, there’s a lot of grass coming up. This property has been grass free since the first sheet mulching 5 years ago. Wonder what’s different this year. Too overgrown to sheet mulch again. Maybe I could add another 3-6” of mulch though. npub1s4es8sexjymkw03hmu5v4te09laefjv5te6vxumazjed6a03mmgshk6cym Hippy Steve The unintended consequences of this regime's actions are delightfully ironic.
