Some hot takes from my end based on a first reading of the Fifth Circuit ruling deeming the #TornadoCash sanctions unlawful. That is, sanction on the autonomous parts of it.
As the summary says, they are a nobody's "property" - whereas the district court emphatically found that pretty much everything can be "property". That's good news for users. It remains to be seen if it matters in the criminal cases.
I'll start with a nit:

Not all cryptocurrencies are decentralized. Anyway, this doesn't matter until such time as the government argues that lack of decentralization makes it "property". They didn't make that case. Yet. Probably not anytime soon, because such an argument would get bogged down in endless experts arguing. There's plenty of lower hanging fruit.
> An externally owned account is a wallet that can be controlled by anyone with the address and corresponding private key. [...]
> The second type of account, a smart contract, is a software or computer program that is uploaded onto the blockchain network. These accounts do not require validators.
That last sentence is wrong. Validators also check what the smart contracts are doing. I guess what they are tying to get at is that smart contracts are autonomous, in the sense that humans may have designed them and may trigger them to perform an action, but the specific action is not at the discretion of validators.
Hopefully that's not a material mistake in the context of this ruling (because it would risk getting overturned).
The rest of their primer is fine. I always assume judges just copy-paste convincing explanations from either party or their intranet. Whether they really understand the material can only be determined by reading the meat and potatoes of the ruling, not from the boilerplate. But it's still nice to see it make sense.
Then there's a little random what-the-fuck:

That claim is not substantiated in the footnote, and seems to be based on rumors spread by analytics company Kharon back in 2022. They only showed that he worked for a company that did work for the FSB. It did not explain what his role was, which clients he worked for, etc.. The ruling seems to cite from that company's press release, without linking to it:
> Digital Security OOO is a Russian entity designated by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2018 for providing material and technological support to the FSB, Russia’s primary security agency.
It should also be noted that the standard procedure for FSB assets after they're captured is to return to Russia (to avoid talking too much). They will even leave their wife and family behind. Alexy did not do that, even though he had plenty of opportunity while he was on ankle bracelet.
Anyway...
Note that the district judge made three claims, but the appeal only deals with the second claim - because it doesn't need to do more.
> The district court granted the Department’s motion for summary judgment and denied that of the Tornado Cash users, concluding: (1) Tornado Cash is an “entity that may be properly designated as a person under IEEPA,” (2) that smart contracts constitute “property,” (3) and that the DAO, which runs Tornado Cash, has an “interest” in its smart contracts because it derives profits from its crypto mixing and relaying services that run on smart contracts.
And further down:
> Accordingly, we need not address whether Tornado Cash qualifies as an “entity” or whether it has an “interest” in the immutable smart contracts.
That's unfortunate, because the question whether the Tornado Cash contract itself is an "entity" is extremely relevant in the Dutch criminal case. Because the Dutch judge answered that question with "yes" and claims that it is that "entity" that's doing the money laundering.
Ditto for the question of "interest", as the prosecutor made a fairly elaborate case for that based on tokenomics - which the judge ignored, but didn't dismiss either.
(setting aside the fact that Dutch judges can and do ignore what American judges say, especially in the context of a completely different area of law)

Which IIUC means that, as of recently, the judge can interpret what "property" means:

Interesting analysis. Two shitcoiner shenanigans in particular:
1. Attack ads against candidates that don't mention crypto at all (and obfuscating the crypto connection by how they named the PACs). This wasn't some broader cultural push either, they would support radically opposed candidates.
2. Mostly supporting candidates that were likely to win anyway
Molly assesses that this was done to impress / intimidate politicians to pay attention to their demands moving forward, even if it's against the interests of their constituents.
A big goal of the industry is to get rid of SEC enforcement against them. Regardless of your opinion about the SEC, I think it's fair to say they're mostly a problem for "crypto", not for Bitcoin. The ETFs are there, that's pretty much all the Bitcoin subset of the crypto industry needs, afaik.
A more relevant goal of the lobby is to deal with unbanking of the industry. But Molly is worried that they want to go beyond that and make the government bail them out next time things implode. Which is also something I expect to happen. Though there's no concrete evidence for this yet.

Of course I'm happy for any support of analog freedom tech. But it makes the defense of Bitcoin complicated, as I tried to explain on a Bitcoin Amsterdam panel.
If you simply argue that physical cash is going away and people need an alternative, policy makers might agree with you and point out how they're mandating shops to take cash and how their CBDC vaporware is going to be amazingly good for privacy under €3000 (and magically compliant above that).
But that won't stop a ban on cash payments (to businesses) above €3000 like The Netherlands just passed. That means you must have a bank account for large payments, which you'll then use for small payments out of conceivable. And then everyone is stuck in the surveillance drag net that banks happily facilitate.

I agree with you that PR is unusually important in this war. For comparison, the Nazis exploited civilian casualties (in occupied territories) of allied bombing in their propaganda. But that didn't have much effect in the scheme of things. In this conflict you see it has an effect on arms deliveries, etc, though not as substantial as Iran might have hoped.
But even is preventing bad UN reports is a covert war goal, bombing UN facilities is predictably counterproductive - it draws more attention than the reports themselves. So I'm skeptical that the IDF would bother spending the (reconnaissance) resources.

This is where proportionality comes in. Military action has to be proportional to the goal.
Attacking a UN camera risks death and injury. Now consider two goals:
1. Prevent negative reports
2. Prevent the death of IDF soldiers from leaked operational information
(2) seems proportional, at least defendable. (1) absolutely not.
And that's where priors come in: if you believe the IDF is fundamentally unethical and just a tool for Netanyalu shenanigans, you might think (1) is the most plausible explanation. I don't think they are, so I find (2) more plausible. Until more information comes in.

The Unifill website says they mainly attacked their camera's. That suggests another possible motive, to prevent Unifill from sharing or leaking intel about IDF troop movements.

The IDF rarely comments on things, so that's really not evidence for your hypothesis that they attacked the UN deliberately to chase them away. My default assumption is that they're doing what say the war goal is, or at least trying to: get rid of Hezbollah. There's just no evidence showing otherwise here, yet.

Where things really get confusing is that nostr users are identified by pubkey, fediverse users by URL. When there's multiple bridges you get an infinite number of permutations, e.g. bridge1.com/npubabc, bridge2.com/npubabc are the same nostr user, and each fediverse user has one npub per bridge. And all can follow and interact:-)

Mostr is a piece of software that bridges between ActivityPub (e.g. Mastodon) and Nostr.
There's a public instance at mostr . pub, but it tends to get blocked by Mastodon admins. I run a private instance on my own domain too, but only my own replies on Nostr can cross that bridge.

There are multiple meanings of "deliberate". All this says is that they hit the building intentionally, that they aimed at it and it wasn't a stray. The relevant question is why they did that. I agree there can be all sorts of reasons for the attack, but I was responding to the claim / suggestion that it was a deliberate attack on the UN by Israel. That's not a reasonable default assumption. Bad intel or some other misunderstanding is a good default assumption, until evidence shows up to suggest otherwise.
As for IDF investigations: the Dutch air-force accidentally killed 70 civilians in Iraq in 2015. It took almost a decade for that to come out. And because of a whistleblower. It was hidden from Parliament too. Militaries around the world are not known for transparency. So we may indeed never know. But stuff leaks, and whisleblowes are out there.

Press coverage of this war between Israel and various Iran proxies is extremely high, e.g. compared to Saudi Arabia vs. Jemen (also Iran). The fact that a bunch of mortars fired at a UN compound even makes the news is absurd. These things happen in all wars (though usually there's no UN or journalist around to get shot in the first place).
Nobody is complaining that Mexican drug cartels don't allow enough journalists on the battlefield. Of course it's fair to hold a democratic county to the highest possible standard.
I'm sure there's both good and malicious reasons why journalists are not given free
and safe access to this war zone. From the other side I'm skeptical that Hamas and Hezbollah will protect every journalist no matter how critical their reporting.
This creates an asymmetry where anytime Israel allows a journalist in, they will only report on bad things done by Israel because otherwise they're killed. Or they get killed by accident by the IDF. There's no upside. But denying them access also looks bad, and isn't how democracies should behave. Embedded journalists in the IDF would be safe and might reveal bad behavior from the other side, but it would be seen as propaganda. Which it is, but so is Al Jazeera coverage. There's no winning strategy here.
And then of course Netanyahu and/or his zealot buddies will find a way to make things even worse. And because this is the middle east, it's always even more complicated.
From a news consumer point of view the best thing is to probably just wait.

Presumably they have to reason to believe Hezbollah is using those locations. I don't know how accurate their intel is of course, but neither do most people who comment on this sort of stuff.
Perhaps a more important question is why on Earth the UN is still there. They never stopped Hezbollah. They can't stop Israel either. Seems they're just in the way? But maybe I'm too cynical.

#GDPR adventure of the day: mailinglist that I don't really remember signing up for - but maybe I was a nice mood - has an unsubscribe link at the bottom.
The page asks me to confirm my request to unsubscribe, but before I can click on OK, a cookie wall popup appears with the usual dark pattern that makes rejection of cookies almost impossible.
Once I figured that out it redirected to the main page, so I had to go back to my email and try to unsubscribe again. Which worked this time.

The sign above the platform doesn't say the next train to the central station will be there. Only the screen will trains lists it. Hidden between a million obscure stations.

It's stupid little details: the train to Berlin main station leaves from different platforms, so there can't be signs pointing people to the right platform. It also leaves from the wrong side of the platform so when you come down the elevator you have to run for several minutes ... to miss it. And then walk back up, go up the elevator, walk to a different platform, and try again.
Meanwhile the announcer rubs it in: "please make sure to be at the correct part of the platform", rather than just having the train do so.

Just watched the whole thing. It's great until it goes off the rails in the last fifteen minutes. I think it's Roger Ver and Amir Taaki that sent the documentary maker chasing a ghost. They made RBF seem important, even suspecting it to be a government sabotage effort. This glorifies @npub1ej4…ndrm's image in his head, which Peter then openly exploited - while being very honest about doing so.
The bigger meta mistake the documentary maker made was to seek out people who enjoy being on TV. If he'd contacted experts in a more systematic way they would have ruined the plot. But this is more fun for everyone. #note1w06…nkww

Thanks for the tip of printing the train ticket... hopefully Seattle to Vancouver is a bit better. I did it in the other direction ten years ago and as far as I remember that was just fine, and scenic.

Nuance lijkt me zeker een goed plan, maar een anti-Israel demonstratie op 7 oktober kan m.i. niet anders opgevat worden dan het vieren van die aanslag.
Als het gaat om het lot van de Palestijnen dan zou 28 oktober gepast zijn, de dag dat Israel de grondinvasie begon. Of 8 oktober, het moment van de oorlogsverklaring. Of een andere historisch relevante dag waar Israel de aggressor was.
De reactie van de VVD op de NS vind ik overigens dan weer gênant.

I think it's relying on https://podcastindex.org rather than polling RSS feeds directly.
That index might be adding some Podcasting 2.0 fields that you want, but the app should probably still poll RSS feeds directly to look for new episodes. Any missing 2.0 metadata can be added later.
Obviously not a trivial thing to implement.
An easier solution might be if we can zap the index to hurry up and refresh our favorite shows.

One very bullish development for @npub1v5u…n0v5 is that the Apple podcast app is increasingly broken. It's now just marking random episodes as played and deleting them.
It used to "merely" do that for Patreon RSS feeds, but it now does it for all shows.
That said, I've noticed episodes often appear many hours later in Fountain than on the Apple Podcast app, to the point where morning podcast show up in the afternoon.

Until exchanges are forced to remove lightning support because it went from a niche nerd thing to large scale privacy.
They'd delisted privacy coins for merely the *marketing* of them being used.
And then might go after lightning developers holding them responsible for for North Korea deposit with the exact same arguments used against tornado cash.

And it doesn't solve the problem of on and off ramps blocking transactions going to and from mixers. Until all NGO donors use Bitcoin and all their landlords and lawyers use Bitcoin, money has to move to and from fiat. This problem is 95% political, 5% technical. Unfortunately, because I prefer technical problems :-)
