The entire op_return debacle was caused by Peter Todd in the first place. That and RBF, also his baby, are the main reasons for the out of band payments to miners. How can anyone possibly trust this guy? He is at war with Bitcoin, and very intentionally attempting to inflict maximum harm. Fixing his "mistakes" with more of his "solutions" is madness.

I think bitcoin has gone too far to accommodate spam. Yes, that's my subjective opinion of what spam is, which is the only definition that matters to me. This is the one lever I can pull to fight that as a node runner. Maybe you think that's naive. I do not care. I'm not giving it up. Even if you're right, and I'm convinced to turn off this option, I insist on having a way to go back, without downgrading, to what I'm doing now. I feel burned by unintended consequences in the past, so I will do whatever I can to avoid the same mistake. Maybe running knots is just a futile gesture, but if that's all I can do then so be it.

Gold's "intrinsic" value is severely overrated. Jewelry is basically wearable SoV, which made a lot of sense is ancient times when there were few other options for storing it. Electronics/industrial uses are mostly a very recent development so they don't explain anything about gold's value before a hundred years ago or so. Gold has always been pretty much useless for anything other than money which is why it was the best money available before bitcoin.

Quantum is fundamentally a very sophisticated way of stealing keys. We should not change Bitcoin to prevent stealing keys, or remediate after the fact. Just because it's high-tech, and hasn't happened yet, doesn't justify it. Once we start allowing changes based on righting perceived wrongs it's over. If there is any other way, such as adding a quantum-proof address scheme, then this is enough.
