To the „we are running small(er) local model“ folks: All relevant open-weight models are based (in more than one way) on continuous work from the mega GenAI corps. As soon as those „local small models“ will threaten their market or power they will stop publishing open-weight models. Because, why shouldn’t they? We know that the people who own and control GenAI tech are the worst. Open-weight is nothing but a fig leaf, ready to be discarded when no longer useful. Same goes for the Chinese ones.

Since I don’t (voluntarily) interact with LLMs and similar „agents“ I’m more susceptible to their output than others who see it a lot. I’m often not sure if some stuff is generated; my pattern detection has not developed as much.

Just listened to one of the luminaries of software development say (paraphrased): „I sort of like pair programming but have been developing on my own for 20 years. Now I enjoy to pair up with Claude for programming. It’s making mistakes, but it’s _well-intended_ mistakes and we discuss them.“
When you’re at that stage of anthropomorphizing an automaton it will be hard to sympathise with the feelings and fallacies of real humans. You got rid of human friction and will probably never go back.

Maybe we non-AI coders are the coachmen of the 21st century. Frankly I don’t care. Humanity could and should have skipped the era of combustion-based individual traffic
and directly gone to battery-powered small vehicles.
So maybe we are not the coachmen but the bicycle riders who pave the road for
the ethical way of next generation software development.
