Last Notes npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse I have quit and restarted a few times. I'm guessing different things have different properties, like I would not casually start drinking again, that scares me more than smoking. Anyways, I noticed that when i started smoking again the first couple were amazing, and then it was instantly back to boring dependency. Knowing that helps me stay quitted. My "one trick" to quit smoking was that I would only roll them myself, and i'd also use filters in the roll. But honestly all that did was make me really expedient at rolling them :P Good luck! I'm a fan of sharing ones inner issues like this. I used to work on the MODIS satellites which is kinda the predecessor of VIIRS and I'm guessing has lots of the same scientists working on it at Goddard. I keep meaning to brush off my notes, because NASA makes all their data available, it's just a matter of like pulling out the right bands if like you wanna make an image. I'm dissapointed at the lack of pushback. I like OpenBSD but not that much. #uncool #openbsd https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-ports&m=178286673648679&w=2 I guess it's just ports so it's all optional, but i still don't have to like it. Also these are not "development" tools. npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse Librarians: actual not artificial intelligence. ? (maybe not if it comes across as ableist) npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse nice bike, especially the lack of disk brakes, and the multiple rear facing red lights. :) npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse I switch back and forth between vi and emacs. Vi is nice if you are into "Unix IS the IDE". It starts instantly. You use the shell for shell things. Emacs is nice to do EVERYTHING in. When I use emacs I leave it running for days. It's especially nice for programming any kind of lisp. Emacs is definitely more of an ideal for using as a pure programming editor, but i have become more and more unix pilled so I tend to use vi more lately. An example is auto formatting. Emacs is great at this IN the editor. Press tab and emacs will do the correct thing indent wise. In vi I have to find an external program that formats (like gofmt or indent) and pipe the buffer contents out to that program and back. This is made easier by using map commands to map keys to do the indenting. But shows how emacs and vi differ basically. npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse I have this urge to put up a palestinian flag because I am so bothered by the US flags and the isreali flag on the "liberal" part of my street. Vermont has these older liberals that are really conservative, but like the nicer ones. (not a compliment) I won't put up a flag for two reasons: 1. I recognize that I am being reactionary. I don't believe in flags more than I want to rebutt the neighbors flags. IOW I would be doing the same thing they're doing, and probably be counter-productive. 2. I live alone and don't have much of a community so I am afraid of vandalism. I'm pretty sure the local cops would see the palestinian flag and just assume i was a terrorist. I would like to think I was above this fear, but i am not. npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse I don't comment on the really bad famous people because i think they should hang to begin to repair society and i know that upsets ppl npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse This isn't me being biased against ppl in wheelchairs. It is me being biased against the act of people choosing to need a wheelchair when they otherwise wouldn't. (I chose an analogy on porpoise there) npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse And then they connect this AI now (LLMs) to future "AI" that is robots doing things. THOSE TWO TECHNOLOGIES ARE DISTINCT. distinct means "not the same". npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse NPR radio saying "AI is sometimes biased" ... AI IS ALWAYS BIASED THAT IS HOW THE TECH WORKS. People are not rational anymore. Like normal people are not rational. I blame smart phones. And AI is just a sympton of what happens when you willingly give over your cognitive agency to a think outside of yourself. (unless it is like you family elders or something) I guess at the minimun do not give your cognitive agency to institutions where they will want to use it for control (including politics by way of media which is their voice) #AI #LLM #IRRATIONAL npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse Yes 100%. I am probably a Luddite in the real meaning of that word also. Like I don't fly in planes anymore. I also don't buy new computers. I think that people expecting to have a computer in their pocket at all times is totally wrong. (from that utility POV you mention) But it's like being a vegan, I don't say it all the time in mixed company. Like most of the people reading this are on a "pocket computer". That is not the medium to tell them I don't think people should have pocket computers. (again because of utility in a difference sense ... i know the message will be counter productive. Like vegans learn to not talk about veganism, because it tends to make people dig into eating meat.) I am prepared to not use computers anymore. I am also someone that can use computers as ethically as possible. (like by not buying new systems.) (Also I am flawed and like i really want a MNT reform pocket which would be a new systems. But even that is on the right side of a lot of things because it is not a mult death corporation.) I mean I did put my money where my mouth is. I quit my high paying programming job at NTT because i couldn't keep working with LLMs and agentic crap. I will eventually run out of money and lose my house etc. (I mean i will get a low paying job before that. I am pretty good at working all kinds of jobs. I just really like programming.) About your last point. I think all of that is not real. You could pay humans to do everything you said instead of doing that. It would be better on all fronts. Also like I was saying in another post, using LLMs in that sense is usually "beauracry management". Like filling out forms, and knowing which forms to fill out. That whole systems needs to go away, and catering to that by providing LLMs to underpriviledged people is making my brain hurt. Also that is idealist and in the short term if using an LLM helps an underpriviledged person I would never tell _them_ to stop. But in the big picture I won't pretend it's useful. Utility starts with food water and shelter and well being from having a good quality of life. Like it's good to remember those first principles. LLMs as a solution to any of that again devolves into bearucracy mitifgation, which first principles would say fight the beauacracy not prop up the mitigation. npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse LLM is a brute force machine. I think that's part of the disconnect between the pro and anti people (i am clearly an anti person). Any dialog is focusing on different things. The pro people are focusing on utility ... valid. The anti people are focusing on the infrastructure ... valid. The deeper point is which of these has more impact or strength of argument ? The infrastructure does. Because if it doesn't then the argument devolves into "it's OK to do something bad if it brings utility" I think that is the point that people like me are seeing implicitly and the pro-AI ppl are like weirdly NOT seeing. #butlerianjihad npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse
Date: Sat, 21 Mar 2026 11:59:02 -0600
From: Theo de Raadt <[email protected] >
To: Renaud Allard <[email protected] >
cc: [email protected]
Subject: Re: [patch] ext4fs rw
In-reply-to: <[email protected] >

Renaud Allard <[email protected] > wrote:

> Maybe it should be made clear on the website that OpenBSD will only
> allow new code made by a human. Now I'm into #chicken and #c . This is pretty normal for me I will oscillate between a few of these things at any given time, I def. haven't given up on zig. Let I find this a great way to learn, meaning jumping between pretty pretty different approaches to similar things. npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse i guess all hot takes are naive ? npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse This is bad for the individuals, but yes please give different groups in the US rank and file more reasons to have soldidarity. (edit: maybe I am missing some nuance and this is a naive hot take) npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse I am bigoted against LLMs. I know it and it is how I deal with the hype. Meaning I can't constantly be reasonable and figure out what is meant and the context of LLMs and what people think about them. It drains my brain power from other things. And I have continually found nothing compelling. Worse, I have typically found very frustrating examples of people using very strong but implied assumptions and using logic that depends utterly on using blinders and ignoring reason. Until the hype dies, I am not interested in them. I am still interested in the old AI stuff like for example path finding, NNs, and markov chains. #butlerianjihad #LLM #hype npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse Why aren't we all playing bzflag? npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse single letter unix server names ...runs away... npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse I just did a quick dive into Z3950 and SRU/SRW, do you know if this data is exposed anywhere for a normie like me? I'm waking up to the abolition concept in the US. It used to surprise me that abolition (which I think of as slavery related) is mostly incarceration related. Now it starts to make sense. It's similar to how people think police protect them, but that was never the main intention. Prisons are to scare you into complying to the demands of the state, even and especially when it isn't logical. (Like many homeless have nowhere to go.) But just because I had no conception of my society and that I was a part of it for better or for worse. Now as an older edgy radical type I WANT TO PAY taxes that go to social and civil services. Please can these recovering drug addicts have fantastic counseling and a nice single room apartment with no responsibilities so they can figure their shit out. That seems like heaven to me. A society that gives you a minimum to live and be comfortable. And I mean the minimum in both senses. Even many liberals don't really want that when pressed. They want people to have more suffering than that. What else does "you mean not work at all?" mean? I feel like lots of adults around me are like me when i was younger. It's annoying but I sorta internalized that notion that it's fine for kids to learn at whatever pace. To drastically extrapolate, it seems like we just have a lot of adults that haven't learned yet. maybe that's OK with these long life spanner wrenches we have. npub1sfpxywkluvx0cpmet0cylsydvhtudz2d4a8rt7zux0a7zf0h2saqmlf0ge Paul SomeoneElse I went from two soekris models (48** -> 5**) to the APU which has been been just chugging away for years as my router.
