Nuclear energy is "hyped" because it's just that efficient. France was able to minimize fossil fuel electricity generation since the 80s thanks to nuclear, there was no fallout to clean and they even recycle some of the waste. npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…re2d no matter what they're hyping up, it's still throwing slop at the problem, the economics of which are ridiculous. the negative integer meme they've found in OpenBSD would've cost an end user like 20 grand in tokens apparently! it's kinda like a new kind of fuzzing except it's bonkers expensive (and they're so heavily subsidizing it right now to make everyone think it's essential and The Future) and the findings so far don't even seem to be as many/large as the ones that happened when coverage-guided fuzzers became big?? 🤔 keep investing in fundamentals. better compartmentalization, attack surface reduction, eliminating entire classes of bugs through languages/compilers/hardware. that's the only way that gets you out of the "check every part of the gorillion lines of code" race npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…gr74 tfw loongarch pc is square, does not even have a loong side npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…h3yf cool cool cool! nsresourced and socket activation support is very nice to see. Spoiler alert: while UnifiedPush may be a relevant service for some apps, it's not where platform dev focus should be. We want a future full of p2p apps that reject permanently-addressable "servers" entirely, after all! And centralization is not where the bulk of the power-saving magic is anyway. The "magic" is in the fact that the SoC can be in deep sleep and the modem will still wake it up with an interrupt when data arrives on an open connection. It should be fine to have apps' own service processes listen for notifications! My rough sketch of a to-do list would be: making sure wakeups don't turn the display on xD research into what's needed to set up filtering on the modem for which sockets can wake the SoC up (but initially, fine to just rely on "nothing else has open sockets anyway, only the background services waiting for pushes" maybe?) support for robust background services: unlike what the Background portal offers now, let #Flatpak apps install systemd-user services, which would have metadata connecting them to the .desktop entry, making them introspectable and accountable via settings GUIs (not via control center popups! they shouldn't show up as "annoying left-over in-process thing possibly eating battery"! they're a different thing, expected to run permanently!) actually getting apps to separate push notification listeners into background services #postmarketOS #linuxmobile #freedesktop npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…50mt "you can't ban LLMs in CTFs" is like "you can't ban Stockfish in chess" and "you can't ban aimbot in Counter-Strike" and "you can't ban splicing and subtle covert mods/tools in speedrunning". It's always gonna be an arms race of cheating vs detection, but if you don't do anything you just make it worse. One measure I can think of is requiring progress screenshots/screencasts to validate. npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 I guess #Servo is now the only serious browser engine taking a stand against slop, even mentioning ethical issues? (Despite one bronze sponsor listed on the homepage being "somethingsomething AI" heh) We really need to get servo-gtk to a more serious state where epiphany could use it… npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…y3hg nice to hear it's not dead (?) the last commit in the repo was 6 months ago, I was wondering what happened there… npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…50mt why is that an "at least"? That a very serious codebase is currently available and no one can take it away is immensely valuable. Owners being able to also use it under any license always seemed like the expectation to me, and seemed reasonable. I've literally spent over a decade in FOSS before even understanding that e.g. GPL-without-CLA was forbidding that! npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…wkx5 oh that exists? oop.. ohh it's sdm636 (basically 660)! cool cool cool. dang don't give me ideas or i'll be drowning in old motos, i already ordered a different one xD npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…8d0p @nprofile…309j @nprofile…lqwx why did you think I was talking about Pixels when I replied specifically to the toot about Qualcomm? npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…8d0p @nprofile…309j @nprofile…lqwx maybe how specifically responding to those requests works is not widely known… but at least it's very much known that GNSS is part of the modem. Support for talking to it has been implemented in FOSS projects like ModemManager. https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/GPS At least in normal operation the OS has to specifically enable GNSS on the modem (and can load assistance data for AGPS). Now the interesting question is whether the firmware would forcibly enable GNSS at the network's request for "emergency reasons"… We don't have proof, but it's definitely not impossible either. npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…0f5x these are some characters xD https://cache.treehouse.systems/media_attachments/files/115/982/625/069/971/438/original/e6c718a199637db0.png npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 PRESENT YOU: "Hey did you know, in the future we have real actual Adobe Photoshop in the freaking browser?" 2005 YOU: "Wow!! So far just the basics (eMMC, SD, WiFi, BT, display, touch, GPU, USB-C), almost modem, no audio or camera yet, and battery charger is missing for the platform for now. Coming soon to qcom-msm8953! It's definitely more usable than nora (msm8917/2GB), at least I can actually scroll mastodon for a long time and read linked articles, but it's still reeeeeally slow UI wise. Somehow I expected more from the SDM632 —hey, it has perf cores, A73-based can't be that bad— but no, those suck too. Geekbench 6 single-core score is ~300, like the Pi 4, massively worse than the sc7180 (7c) and Pi 5 which score ~850. Verified boot is "stronger" in some sense though, as it would hopefully prevent booting into a fake password prompt :) and importantly it also allows for not using FDE! In a ParticleOS style setup, the OS images are only signed (dm-verity set up by the initrd which was verified by UEFI as part of the UKI) but not encrypted. Encrypting only the home partition means that home key can be erased from RAM when the session is locked (finally!!!!) and there is ongoing work to teach gdm+homed to do that. npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…nrqy aw you didn't learn about it all those years ago when "On The Turing Completeness of PowerPoint" exploded? :D npub1srmxkfvqza04w7577w0kv8hxs6uf2qlku2zqaw09ytyrhalcmfmsse2vuv Val Packett 🧉 @nprofile…5f2h @nprofile…czj3 this is not a "smart" issue, it's entirely reproducible in strict mode. xdg-activation is used, in exactly the same way in both cases, but it triggers protection with an existing window as opposed to a new one.
