Even actual gaming hardware like the Dreamcast didn't die from piracy, at least not directly. If publishers knew (or at least acknowledged) that piracy doesn't kill sales, they would've still supported that hardware. The real problem was that if your console can easily run pirated software, then it can also easily run homebrew and publishers wouldn't have to pay licensing fees to publish their games on your system, and licensing fees are how console manufacturers make money as they sell their systems at a loss. Homebrew is the biggest threat to any console manufacturer (not including "open-source consoles like the Ouya or OpenPandora), not piracy.
>90% of people illegally copying the full version doesn't change that if you're outdoing Windows in install frequency.
And I bet most of those people who pirated the retail version of DOOM were either kids whose parents refused to buy that game for them or people living in countries where the game was outright banned.

Hashing seems like a terrible way to detect CP because all one needs to do in order to bypass it is to change one pixel value in a way that it isn't noticeable and then the resulting image would have a completely different hash.

I'm currently toying around with having gravity switches in the levels instead of having the player being able to flip the gravity at will. I feel like there are too many ways levels can be cheesed if the player can flip gravity when ever they want.
Gravity flipping is still going to be a core-mechanic, regardless.

I've noticed that prior to the Charlie Kirk shooting, the whole left/right divide was kind of on the decline (it still existed, but the mainstream left and right were finding common ground on some issues like Epstein, Palantir, and even the war in Gaza), but after the shooting it has went back in full force.
As for Roman Storm, people getting arrested for crypto related projects, even if they don't violate any laws doesn't surprise me.
There was one libertarian activist named Ian Freeman who was arrested for selling bitcoin without a license, even though there is no such license. He followed the law, but the feds were trying to get him arrested for the longest time (he was part of The Free State Project and there is a certain FBI agent that has been dedicated to stalking and cracking down on Free Staters) and they finally found an excuse to arrest him when an elderly couple got scammed and went to his ATM to buy bitcoin.
The worst part is that if he was just selling bitcoin and wasn't expressing libertarian sentiment, he would've probably gotten a lighter sentence or wouldn't have been sent to jail at all. It just shows that you can be punished more if you hold an ideology that the judge doesn't like.

I'm so out of touch with modern games that I don't know the full extent of what you are talking about, but as a hobbyist gamedev, I do agree that balancing difficulty is hard. Unless you pay close attention, it's easy to make your game extremely easy or extremely hard.
Story Difficulty Mode is just a result of games prioritizing story over gameplay and now you have a bunch of casual gamers who enjoy games for their unique story telling and nothing more.

I have this crazy idea that only makes sense in the 80s and 90s, but has never been done as far as I know.
You know how when you call a business or some other organization you get an automated phone menu? What if someone used an automated phone menu and made an adventure game or RPG with it? It could even be multiplayer.
It sounds like a cool concept. I could imagine an alternate timeline where those types of games enjoyed a niche back in the 80s or 90s, but I can't see that happening today.

Changed the lava tiles to make it look like it's bubbling, but it ended up looking weird. Judging from other games, lava tiles tend to have 4 frames of animation instead of three, but if I add an extra frame then I need to add an extra frame to the water tilesets.

Bosses now drop life capsules upon death (assuming your max HP isn't maxed out). During my test playthroughs, I noticed that I reach the end of the game with my max HP still in the single digits for whatever reason. I also want to make it possible to reach a max HP of 20.

So I logged on to Nostr again, and once again, the whole "nostr is dead" claims made by the fedi seem to be false. I don't see any bots, CP spam, or any of that stuff.

Tried my best to add hair to the sprite. I still don't like it that much. I think I should redo the shield because is side walk-cycle has him swinging the shield but that's because the base sprite has both his arms swinging while walking.
And of course, I also have to reposition the sword during attacks. I might have to redo the sword sprite because it looks way to big for him.

So apparently, there are riots going on in Romania and it's because a truly independent presidential candidate won the first round of elections, despite not being on the ballot, yet he had his victory voided, despite the Romanian courts initially accepting his victory.
I don't know much about this guy, but he actually and surprisingly does seem genuine. He is 100% anti-COVID vaccine, against funding Ukraine (while also not being pro-Russia), and is skeptical of both the Apollo moon landings and 9/11.

Added a delay after the player sprite disappears and before the level restarts. I kind of cheated by just copying the same transparent frame like 6 times just to give the illusion that there is a delay between the death animation finishing and the level restart, but the animation is still going up until the restart of the level.

Tried to make the "death whirl" animation in sync with the sound effect. Now, I realized that I need two delays. One before the player starts spinning (just to allow the mind to process that they got hit) and one for after the player disappears.

Finally found a "death whirl" sound effect for when the player gets killed. It took me forever to find one because I didn't know what it was called. Obviously it's not in sync because it's a stock sound effect that I just downloaded, but I plan to sync it in due time.

I feel like the cutting of DEI and wokeness, especially from Big Tech is just going to bring more of that crap to FOSS spaces and make the wokeness problems there much worse.
You are already seeing it now as even more people are ditching Twitter in favor of Mastodon and BlueSky. You also have European leftists boycotting all American companies out of fear that they may be funding trans genocide, so expect more of them embracing FOSS and ruining even more projects and services.

I just wish that people would just simply treat it as a decentralized alternative to payment processors and leave it at that. I know GNU Taler exists but from my understanding it only works if your bank/credit union implements it.

I think it goes back further than that. Once upon a time, liberalism, republicanism, and populism were considered "left". There is theory that communism, socialism, and left-anarchism are all controlled opposition ideologies made to undermine the enlightenment and liberal movements in Europe by being extreme versions of what the enlightenment movement wanted, and those ideologies were made to devolve into fascism (i.e full top-down control) by design.

In their purest definitions, socialism is where the workers control the means of production, and communism is a classless, moneyless, and stateless society. So I guess you could make the argument that the "not real communism" counter-argument is correct, but that leaves the question on whether a communist society is even possible or desirable, assuming they aren't controlled opposition ideologies like I suggested earlier.
Also, just how people are confused by the definitions of communism and socialism, I think people are confused about the definition of capitalism. A far-leftist will argue that rich people buying/bribing politicians, wars for economic gain, etc are all examples of the "evils" of capitalism, yet a right-libertarian would say otherwise as those examples violate the non-aggression principle. Every ancap vs ancom debate I've seen devolves into these types of arguments.

The conspiracy theorist in me wants to think that it's all intentional. It makes it easier to control people when everyone is in their own ideological echo-chamber where there ideas can never be challenged.

Decided to get rid of the penalty of taking half of your coins when you die. I realized that this game is brutally difficult and losing money on top of your equipment just seemed way too harsh, so I decided to just have it reset your equipment to level 1 and leave it at that.

Added a "death animation" for bosses (actually for all enemies but I don't think it works well with them when I tested it) instead of just a single frame. There is supposed to be an additional frame but it doesn't appear in game.
