I gave it a spin on FF 152, macos 26.5.1
I did have the fallback emoji font work ok. When I disabled the `font-varian-emoji: emoji` declaration. I did get blanks.
According to the dev tools fonts tab, it was using Apple Emoji font. Curiously, when I had disabled font-variant-emoji, dev tools said it was using the Arr font.
The network tab said the fonts arrived as application/octet-stream instead of font/woff2. Maybe that's a place to continue.

If the font doesn't show up there, then firefox is unable to use it (whether because of a font bug or a firefox bug, I don't know). If it shows up, then it's maybe a rendering bug.

in the tab panel where you have layout and computed styles there's a (frequently hidden by overflow) tab "fonts" which shows you all the fonts used in an element's text content.

😅 never.
The PUAs are unicode ranges that are left undefined forever. They can be used for things that are not (to be)standardized. Like company-specific letter-like material.
But I looked up examples in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_Use_Areas#Vendor_use and Apple has a whopping 1280 characters specified there.
Anyway, sounds more like a simple bug or maybe font variant shenanigans. Do the dev tools indicate if the custom font is used in the page?

meanwhile in Germany, the head of the government office for "jump innovation" tells me that, supposedly, Europe has 5-10 models that _just_ need a bit funding to scale up - but alas the VCs are not giving them funding so the government should.
My "favorite" part is he prefers calling new models supernovas - without any irony of course.

I loved the idea way back when but no more chromeos in my life has been goooood.
Last year, I took two out-of-updates chromebooks and put ubuntu on one (for a family member) and batocera on the other. Much better 😉 Besides, removing the bios write protection screws and flashing them felt so 90s.
I also moved an older family member (from one of those) to a cheap-ass HP laptop with ubuntu+chrome on it. They barely noticed the difference.

I also see the "self-eradication" of some developers (outside the mainstream), trying LLMs instead of learning, thus producing even more outdated (& unmaintainable) CSS.
I actually wished we had slower feature rollouts on the web (slower-but-simultaneous across engines). But I also wished we could do something about the long tail of engine updates.
On a related note: I just removed an instance of @supports (display: flex) from a code base at work 😉
