And there would be plenty more to mention for their contributions on the engine, documentation, translations, beta testing, infrastructure, funding, etc.
It really takes a village to release a new version of Godot, and I'm really grateful to everyone who pitched in – this is your achievement! 💪

Shout-outs to Repiteo and @npub1lca…h9fv who took care of the release management, AThousandShips for leading the bug and regression tracking, @npub10qk…8cl0 for the wonderful release notes, and all the contributors who took it upon themselves to fix blocking bugs!

#GodotEngine 4.5 is out, and it's an amazing release from all Godot contributors! 🏅
This release is special to me because it's the first one (since 2.0) that was released without my involvement.
I've been on parental leave 🐣 since July and left the release process fully to my Godot teammates. They did a great job!

My big brother @npub17xy…hx6j is about to beat me to releasing a game on Steam(*), despite me being the one working professionally in the game industry 😭
Help me repair this injustice by wishlisting, following and sharing @npub1ykz…vj49!

Honestly, we do care about sharing our announcements to all users, and especially on a platform that's open source and user owned like Mastodon.
But we're seriously considering doing so with comments disabled in the future...
This is just one example but the amount of FOSS absolutists who give us shit for e.g. being hosted on GitHub is just not worth our time.
I have 15 years of FOSS development experience, I've seen it all. Absolutists just make FOSS seem toxic to pragmatic people.

Looking at the replies on https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@godotengine/113177931856961903
... What's up with the FUD spreading on Mastodon?
The Godot editor is available as direct download, and packaged on Steam, EGS, Google Play, and now Horizon Store as a VR enabled app.
All open source and free, with no strings attached, but folks on Masto talk as if Godot sold its soul to the devil.
Mastodon is a platform that claimed to be designed to reduce toxic aspects of social media, but in my experience it's the most antagonistic I'm on.

I wouldn't claim it's always that easy for all projects though. It's a goal, and something we pay great attention to, but not a guarantee.
Engines are complex, and the API is huge.
But I think we have a decent track record, and 4.2 → 4.3 in particular I'm very proud of 😊

For those not familiar with it – what is Godot's upgrade process, e.g. for 4.2 → 4.3?
- Have a project in 4.2
- Download 4.3 (50 MiB), unzip it
- Open 4.3, and edit your 4.2 project
- Done*
*In specific cases, there can be minor adjustments to make, e.g. depth shaders in 4.3.

We plan to keep making 4.x releases 2-3 times per year, with care for compatibility and a smooth upgrade process.
Over time it may be difficult to guarantee compatibility across multiple minor releases (e.g. 4.0 → 4.5) but if you stay on top of new releases it should be smooth.

So I really appreciate Unity adopting a similar release policy to ours, where users should feel safe to adopt minor feature release as they come.
It will take a while to unlearn the current upgrade wariness, but it's a worthy change for developers.

"Unity wants fewer developers to park on older versions of the engine"

That's a good change.
With Godot we've always had as a goal to make updating to new feature updates as easy as possible, and something developers shouldn't be afraid of.
We know the game industry is very wary of engine updates during development, but we want to challenge that.
