We're not 'arguing against Signal.' We're saying that govts shouldn't use consumer messaging apps.
Govts need enterprise s/w. Signal doesn't offer those features, and has never claimed to. Its focus is totally different, and that's fine.
We provide ent-grade features as part of our commercial solution. That revenue pays the salaries of people who develop FOSS and commercial software.

Phishing/social engineering is always a concern; even just tailgating through a door in the physical world...
But a communications solution that is self-hosted, integrates with internal identity and access mgt systems, and operates as a closed network/federation helps minimise risks.
All of which comes down to optimising for the use case. 🙂

This is about use case. Signal is a consumer messaging app.

Matrix is an open standard. It’s not a vendor, and has no vendor lock-in.
If you self-host (as govts do), then it’s simple to move your server to different underlying infrastructure.
If you’re using a hosted service: Any decent paid hosting service should let you take your data with you, so there’s rarely a lock-in from paid hosting services.

Element Classic shared no code between iOS/Android/Web and so more than tripled bugs & maintenance. It also used legacy UI (UIKit and Android Views). So Element X switched to using matrix-rust-sdk as a shared engine, and also switched UI to SwiftUI & Jetpack Compose => new app. It has several years to get to parity with the old app though, hence no forced upgrade yet. (Element X Web is taking a very different path, fwiw: https://fosdem.org/2026/schedule/event/DZJVTS-an-element-web-client-for-the-future/)

Notifications on Element X iOS should be rock solid. So something must be going wrong - please can you submit debug logs after missing some? Also, what server is this on? Frankly server problems sound more likely. (On Element X Android however there are some known problems on notifs if you don't give the app full permission to run in the bg; we're working on these).

Resourcewise, it entirely depends on your usage patterns; the absolute minimum is 2 cores and 2GB of RAM, but for a public-facing server you'd probably want at least 4 cores and at 16GB of RAM or so.

In a non-E2EE application, Bob can trust the server that the message is from Alice (as Alice is authenticated). In E2EE, Bob needs to check (cryptographically verify) that the keys of Alice’s new device used for message encryption, are cryptographically linked to Alice’s identity.
This is a slightly simplified & compressed summary for those who are more tech savvy.
For a non-technical user the simplified summary is that other users can always be sure that this device belongs to you.

- Device verification is needed for the purpose of end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging. In Matrix, each user can have multiple devices (aka sessions, logins). When you log in a new one and verify it - what is happening under the hood is that you cryptographically sign the keys of this new device (which are necessary for E2EE) with your cryptographic identity. This will provide other users the ability to cryptographically verify that this device belongs to you.

At #MatrixConf2025, Anna & Kenneth shared how Försäkringskassan’s SAFOS (using @npub1m9z…whzq + Element) collaboration platform doubled in usage.
Initially developed to replace Skype for Business, SAFOS offers interoperable communications between authorities while maintaining digital sovereignty.

eSam, a membership organisation with over 40 government agencies, recommends adopting @npub1m9z…whzq as the open protocol for sovereign, secure and interoperable collaboration.

Element has signed an open letter to European leaders alongside other organisations.
We are concerned that the Danish Presidency’s current proposal on the Regulation for Child Sexual Abuse could introduce backdoors and client-side scanning, creating risks for security, innovation and digital sovereignty in Europe.
We urge European leaders to ensure that any approach protects encryption, privacy, and the trust that underpins Europe’s digital ecosystem.

it’s in the middle of being reworked so the UI isn’t done yet; if your spaces are at risk of state reset then you can upgrade them by enabling devtools in settings, going to the space, “view timeline” and then /upgraderoom 12.

you may be misunderstanding what MAS is: it's just the implementation of the new auth APIs, which let you login via QR code, or have 2FA, or specify personal access tokens, etc. It shouldn't feel overkill (other than it's currently a separate app alongside synapse). The idea is to ship a copy inside synapse in future to avoid the perceptual headache of having to run a separate process.

yup, it only works with synapse for now. but it heavily leans on all the cool stuff which comes with Matrix Authentication Service, so if you're not yet migrated to MAS, you'll need to do so: https://element-hq.github.io/matrix-authentication-service/setup/migration.html

There’s a misunderstanding here. Element is HQ’d in the UK. It has some subsidiaries used for hiring employees in France/Germany/US and selling in those countries, but there’s no more US aspect than there is French or German.

Element users on the default http://matrix.org homeserver are currently impacted by a serious database outage (https://mastodon.matrix.org/@matrix/115136245785561439)which will take at least 12 hours to recover - many apologies to everyone impacted. Users on their own deployments are of course unaffected.
