Last Notes npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan Congratulations to U.S. friends-- and good luck with the hard work ahead. I think much of the world (some despots excepted) is breathing a sigh of relief even if these victories are really only a first step. npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan Chuckling at a tiny home show- (by all means have the amenities you need- my observation is just humour at the things that are important to different people)- but this home owner specifically mentioned the ice-maker and dishwasher as being crucial/most appreciated things in her kitchen. Two things I don't have and have never used (did have a dishwasher at a couple of rented places in Toronto, didn't use them; don't think I've ever had or wanted an ice maker..) npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan The Cross-quarter Day between Autumn Equinox/ Winter Solstice is this week (November 6/7). In the ancient Latvian calendar this marks the end of Time of Spirits +beginning of Time of Ice. So we have taken time to remember lost loved ones and now we continue preparation for colder shorter days ahead. This week is set to be warmer again, but last week was looking quite icey! It fell Saturday/Sunday, most melted by Sunday afternoon, though there were patches in shady spots for a few days. Like many of us (esp *old* music lovers?) I could have easily done 10 of these from different points in my life, different genres! I opted for a somewhat random but representative selection from early-middle adulthood, from a few (but not all) key uber-grenres for me. Of course I had to spend some time arranging the albums on the poster..lol almost went back to choose some different ones for the look...lol #music #PopCulture https://files.mastodon.online/media_attachments/files/117/515/012/741/945/660/original/66004c2386df80ee.jpg npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan 'Bug' season is winding down here- we've had many nights below freezing, very few flowers left etc. I haven't seen #moths on the outdoor walls by night lights for a while so I was happy to see these through a window. Taking pics from inside in the dark was tricky but got a few with flash- kind of light but interesting + without flash- lacking detail but cool mood. I'm working on wide video from the drive etc but photo and video editing has been challenging (slow!) since we've had some computer issues and gone back to an older laptop- more stable, but less powerful. I laid an altar for autymn + remembrance of Mother's passing, yesterday. Technical glitches getting photos /videos onto the computer- lost a big whack :( especially of the altar after complete :( Waiting for the sun to reach that spot again to go try for more images- leaves probably wilted, but oh well..lol #autumn #SeasonalRhythms #pagan #animist #Latvian https://files.mastodon.online/media_attachments/files/117/321/983/084/981/546/original/324192a3ac4fc943.jpg npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan Always happy to see Dragonflies- because they are cool, but also because they are key predators helping keep insect populations in balance (esp mosquitoes!) We've had recent cool damp weather, not really their ideal (last few and next couple of days warmer) but happy to see a new flush of a few kinds. Curious about your thoughts on common desciptions (between gens, not quite fitting etc) Watching (probably won't finish) a video about the psychology of the generation between boomers and gen x- those born 1954-65. I was born near the end of that- definitely agree that I never felt part of the boom-- I was born in the Summer of Love, not participating in it. Overall probably more in common with gen x.. -cont- #GenerationJones #GenX #boomers #Canada npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan I swear Environment Canada is embarrassed from recent years of constant warnings- rainfall warnings for not that much rain, snowfall warnings r\for 10cm, thunderstorm warnings all summer.. now they seem to downplay everything- last week's hail and hours of lighting? 'chance of showers, with possible thunderstorm'.. tonight? 'showers, local amount 5 mm' actual result hours of rain, varying intensity, but often coming very hard.... #weather #Alberta npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan 1 Environment Canada (weather forecasting) is weird- day after day week after week over summer they have had 'Severe Thunderstorm Watches' - meaning the conditions are there, and not rarely 'ST Warnings' when tracking specific storms. Often the end result may or may not be much of anything depending on where you are and the storms hit.. Now this evening, no watch or warning and there was tons of lightning, downpour, hail, thunder at work in town-- contintued- #weather #Alberta #Canada #storms npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan Catching up on video posts to fediverse (all these and the longer ones I probably won't post to fediverse due to file size are on YT link in pfile). this is #Spectra I may post some of them on #Loops though one od the ones I posted there last week had terrible sound quality (only on that platform) so we'll see .. This is a grouse strutting its stuff on the driveway back at the end of January bonus #winter #cooling vibves #nature #birds #Alberta https://spectra.video/w/iVBuZJarnLNfREpSKU8ZcB npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan @nprofile…djfr @nprofile…p7a0 yes, eyes, antennae and no 'wasp waist' npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan @nprofile…add4 Yeah- I was suprised some years ago to show a picture of some 'bees' on a flower, and be told they were flies! I've since seen many many kinds and sizes and shapes! There are in fact various sub/families/genera involved- and variously called drone flies, flower flies, hover flies, bee flies etc. Some like this one really look like wasps, some really look like various kinds of bees, others are more loosely inspired- striped or fuzzy etc npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan @nprofile…djfr @nprofile…p7a0 iNat's auto recognising software actually suggested it was a wasp, when I clicked that choice away it suggested perhaps Meadow Flies Genus Chrysotoxum. I'm no fly expert, there are so many!! We have all kinds of bee/wasp mimics, but this is definitely among the most accurate. npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan @nprofile…djfr @nprofile…p7a0 As promised. When I went to fish this person out of a water bucket, I thought it was a wasp from a distance but seeing the chunky body it was obviously a fly :) antennae are another giveaway. Not great shots, the spot was darker than I realised. It looked very soggy but quickly moved onto the pots from where I placed it on a bench + by the time I got the camera + took a few shots, it was dry enough to buzz away! #FlyDay #insects #inverts #Alberta https://files.mastodon.online/media_attachments/files/117/145/698/196/385/490/original/7b089d92fdc99c20.jpg https://files.mastodon.online/media_attachments/files/117/145/698/267/049/815/original/ed373976b9552e91.jpg https://files.mastodon.online/media_attachments/files/117/145/698/273/471/180/original/1676e3f473b5a746.jpg npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan @nprofile…djfr @nprofile…p7a0 so many cool creatures :) next I have to post a fly that I fished out of water the other day- one of the most accurate (from a little distance) wasp mimics! npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan I was talking about #wasps (etc) with @nprofile…p7a0 + @nprofile…djfr here's a cool local one not huge but good size- maybe close to 1 inch/couple cm long? but very narrow. I *think* this is the same kind I saw earlier in the year laying eggs in cocoon of the Forest Tent Caterpillars (of which we had a major explosion this year- did I ever share videos?) if so, this should have been a great year for them! #insects #Alberta #BorealForest #inverts #nature #photography https://files.mastodon.online/media_attachments/files/117/139/994/894/927/637/original/7718b59f5b941993.jpeg https://files.mastodon.online/media_attachments/files/117/139/994/952/704/176/original/8ff25f77e6439589.jpeg https://files.mastodon.online/media_attachments/files/117/139/994/952/811/485/original/ee9f2abb30770275.jpeg https://files.mastodon.online/media_attachments/files/117/139/994/955/235/595/original/2385e1c60ab018b8.jpeg npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan @nprofile…8dvk somebody invented- or noticed and described!- the first stories :) also I get the impression with the Little Mothers that they can be described/added to as needed, so I feel free..lol npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan the first one is a thunderstorm, viewd through the windows, rain and light hail pouring down on the rock gardens etc. npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan huh, that one shows.... #pagan #animist #poem #Alberta #Canada npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan 2 I'll try the link to the second, but I still haven't figured out how to get around the post pending thing-- the link still works, but it doesn't show the thumbnail. Also the sound is not good on the first vid with rain (sounds like metal on metal like some vids processed with Windows Movie Maker..- maybe this platform will only be good for human voice or something?)- that vid sounds fine on my computer and on YT.. not as noticeable on second vid as that is quiet. https://loops.video/v/hBPddSBtZh npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan @nprofile…p6sd 2 more comments: shared link to mastodon, and it says post pending to get original author's permission to quote- that's me, how do I set that to work properly? - also the sound is bad on playback on loops-- the first vid features loud falling rain, and the sound is metallic- like the bad sound of background sound after using Windows Movie Maker for example. The same video does not sound like that on my computer nor on YouTube, so it is something in the processing on Loops.. npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan that's interesting- says 'post pending' while they get the original author's approval for quote.. hmm, that's me, we'll see how this works..lol npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan 1 I've posted my first 2 videos to Loops, a non-corporate, open source short video hosting platform-- anyone using it or have thoughts? #video #weather #garden #Alberta #Canada https://loops.video/v/hBOLK0GPZ9 npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan @nprofile…p6sd note: the description space allowed is super limited! If one needs to put music credits, for example, its way too small.. I don't use a phone. npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan Fascinating to see reactions to the song The Visitors by #ABBA- reactors are young/youngish (Americans + a Brit) and don't understand what the song is about: someone in their home as secret police come banging on the door to take them away. A reference obviously to #authoritarian regimes, perhaps more on people's minds in the '80s, but really, the relevance has never gone away. Do young people in general just have no idea about this or were these just some sheltered individuals? #music npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan @nprofile…zkdz @nprofile…h7hc Good luck with cake, hope its yummy, htat's outside my knowledge..lol I just toss into soup, rather near the end of the cooking. I think this is the point of animism-- it is not necessary to really believe the rock is alive (I'm not saying it isn't!) but if we treat everything as if it is, we are really part of the world instead of just sitting on top consuming it all! npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan @nprofile…8dvk Latvian mythology has similar sky gods to the other Indo-Europeans like Nordic, Greek etc, so a thunder god, a big daddy ( I haven't looked at him much-- Zeus analog maybe). This started 6pm ish, I was finished work 830 and my friend who had been monitoring the storm from home and hoping it didn't come our way (we are east and south of Rocky, it moved east, but a bit north of us) picked me up in the middle of that second round of hail https://files.mastodon.online/media_attachments/files/116/954/874/141/543/332/original/3caa40bcf6687ccc.jpeg npub1tfh0cug4el09ejerpc7w8r73jratdgyglcz2lwzuezzrrj2hd4sq34h6me cohan 3 and as it looked like the funnel touched down (minimal damage south side, I think) and move toward us, a couple people went in- the rest of us kept watching- I felt like the funnel was retracting, and indeed it started to move away, and we got no more than wind rain and moderate hail.
