libdeflate doesn't do streaming, so it was no go for etcpak, but I probably should look at it in context of my image viewers!

@nprofile…0kf8 @nprofile…wxct With md4c you get entry + leave events for blocks and spans. "Text" is one of the span types. I just have a small state machine and issue render commands as the events arrive.

@nprofile…5x8e @nprofile…c3sc On Linux it's basically "has any of the libraries changed the ABI since the release". ICU does this like once a week, so your best bet is static linking. The usual glibc problems are in the reverse direction, so that doesn't apply here.
I think I have recentlish tried to run mtv binary from 2000 or thereabouts, and it did work. mtv, as in the commercial mpeg1 player application, not to be confused with mpv.

The entitled abuse you get as an open source maintainer. Like, dude, I don't give a fuck if some internet rando I never heard about uses my software, or if they make a fork nobody will ever know about. I spend my weekends and evenings developing this because it fills a gap in the market that I personally need. If anyone wants to use it, be my guest, but I have zero tolerance if you choose to be a toxic asshole about it.

@nprofile…5x8e @nprofile…622w @nprofile…hm63 Keeping the binary in the version control may be (sigh) the right thing to do.
I do not do that, I have an up-to-date hugo provided by the distro, and the CI jobs are also always getting the latest one. I think I had two breakages during the last 4 years or so that required doing some really unwanted maintenance work when I wanted to just write something.

@nprofile…hm63 @nprofile…valu @nprofile…w2cy It is quite interesting to ride the edge of the photopic and scotopic vision. There's no trick to it, you just need to find something bright enough to go via the day vision route, that at the same time is dim enough to not kill the night vision. Some smartphone screens can do this at night.
What you get is a "full framerate" refresh of the bright parts (e.g. white text), and clearly very choppy "updates" of the dark parts (e.g. camera hole against a dark screen background).

@nprofile…xlvy @nprofile…wvm8 Well, it is a complication, and a system specific one too. I write cross-platform software and it would be the first thing on my cutting table.
Interestingly, the Symbian SDL port did support layers, e.g. for mouse cursor, despite no support in hw. It had to be all composited on the slow CPU.
I removed all this and the OpenTTD port went from being laggy and jumpy to a completely smooth experience.
Weird somebody wrote support for layers there, but I guess they wanted them!

2025-12-21 10:42:29 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…xlvy @nprofile…wvm8 Layers are exposed in the Linux drm interface. Compositors use them to fast-path window rendering, when possible.

My random attempt at writing a game, about 25 years ago.
There's a config option to scale down textures for Voodoo compatibility.
The biggest surprise was that it compiled and worked with almost no changes required (there were 2 mismatches between function definition and declaration). Two layers of SDL compat.
All this prompted by "how can we better onboard people" at work and remembering the excellent https://www.sjbaker.org/steve/omniv/matrices_can_be_your_friends.html article.

@nprofile…sht7 Ignoring the yet another internet outrage, it's kind of laughable that the whole thing revolves about basically some unknown guy (I had to google that he did a well known web framework) making a bloated Linux ISO image that is basically Arch with Hyprland forced as the compositor, combined with a set of config files that suit his needs.
But on the other hand, people will "distro hop" so that they have a different default wallpaper, so what do I know?

Going with the spectrogram silliness – not even a close reproduction of the original – is basically saying "hey, look, the parrot can parrot a sound!" I felt cheated.

Super cool Markdown renderer. The new ImGui font system. And of course, the LLM integration that actually works (most of the time).
There are more things I want to do with it, but now I'm finally confident it is usable and in good shape.

@nprofile…jvvf Some time ago I saw a video of someone trying to use Tracy and it was super painful to watch.
The manual states how to get started with basic things, "but I want to do them my own way" (that will not work).
The manual states a task is very difficult to do (impossible for new user), "right, that's the first thing I want to do!" The easy way is ignored.
The manual is open on a page with a direct answer to the question the user has, "damn it, this thing is not explained anywhere!"

Building the executable for desktop platforms (including emscripten) is fairly easy.
On Android you need to reverse CMake and gradle, and, uh... it's a side project, more important things now, kthxbye! iOS is probably similar.

@nprofile…t3wn @nprofile…gvnm These bugs are fantastic. You do everything right and according to the spec in your program. Then you use some external library (cough, gtk, cough) for a silly one-off thing, and suddenly your xml files no longer load correctly.
The people working on the library in question are not even aware of this, because they all live in countries that use the dot as a fractional separator. How much can it hurt to make one little locale() call?

Webp is an image format that uses the keyframe encoding algorithm of VP8 videos. Similar things exist for AV1 (avif) and h265 (heif).
Today I found out that webp also supports animation. So how do you add animation support to a format derived from a video codec?
Yes, you guessed it right, by combining multiple single-image webp data into a container format.
