In short we're currently focussed on Avoyd as a Voxel Editor. Once this is sufficiently capable we hope to pick up working on the game whilst continuing to advance the editor (as part of the mod and dev toolset for the game as well as just as a tool).

I've been working on some path traced rendering improvements in Avoyd, and the combo of using Renderdoc for the Vulkan compute shader along with a 'debug this pixel' developer button for the CPU path tracer has made checking for differences fairly simple.
It's still a lot easier to debug CPU code (especially with runtime compiled C++), so I'm able to get a long way with just debugging the CPU code and making the GPU code do the same (even with the GPU using wavefront style path tracing).

"Ask Copilot / Analyze with Copilot" is now appearing in some Visual Studio context windows. It's a fricking pain to remove these but you can do it with
Tools > Customize > Commands
select "Context menu"
Then I found the following have Copilot:
- Debugger Context Menu | Data Tip Window
- Debugger Context Menu | Watch Window
There are probably others I've not spotted yet. I don't think these do anything unless you set up a Copilot account but it annoys me to have clutter I don't use.

@nprofile…5x8e @nprofile…622w @nprofile…hm63 We ( @nprofile…edna mainly ) built ours with Python using the markdown2 and jinja libraries. However that was before other options were readily available. At the core it just slaps hand made html together with generated html from markdown and also raw input html for some things md doesn't do well.
Not sure I'd do it this way again given other options.

@nprofile…0edt 6V is ~ 2x Li-ion, so you could use old li-ion batteries from a laptop pack (removed and charge with something like https://www.xtar.cc/product/xtar-vc4s-charger-112.html) or buying raw 18650 batteries. You can get holders for them with wires too. I make my own large USB power packs and small 240V inverter packs this way.

@nprofile…j05z Sure but without certain features for efficient tensor operations and low bit float support a given GPU could be made which was great for gaming (both in terms of cost and performance) but bad for LLMs. It's a bit harder on CPUs but removing AVX support might be a good step.

Dreamt I was part of a team founded to make CPUs and GPUs which can't run LLMs (missing features) so gamers can afford hardware. Got into an argument about ramping up a production test first as I had some experience with the process of making integrated circuits and it was pretty tricky. Of course in my dream the production process was μm scale, which is manageable in a fairly small lab and the sort of thing I'd had experience with. Making modern chips requires multi-billion euro facilities.

In other words, the GPU LLMs will likely be obsolete before the solar panels start generating more energy than it took to launch them. So you might as well power the same datacentre with the fuel you were going to use to launch it.

I did a very rough calculation of how much energy it might take to launch a datacentre to low earth orbit, vs the power draw of such a datacentre.
For a ~1 tonne GPU LLM rack satellite consuming ~100kW the energy of the fuel (i.e. not including oxidiser, launcher and ground energy costs) needed to launch this into space alone is comparable to that required to run the datacentre for 3-10+ years even on a future Starship.
So my assumption is that this isn't a good idea.

@nprofile…3vpz @nprofile…hm63 You can simplify an awful lot of OpenGL these days, but the largest problem is that tool support for decent profiling has pretty much disappeared. A secondary issue is that I have experienced some performance issues due to shader compilation for long shaders, which is why Avoyd's path tracer runs on Vulkan.
A lot of Vulkan's verbosity issues can be worked around with some support code, and it is getting simpler to write (though I stick to an older subset for compatibility atm).

Interesting induction stove design. Somewhat similar principle to the Control Freak but with an added battery to increase its power capabilities over a standard US plug, and a better temperature sensor
Stoves use very little energy over the day, but require a large amount of power for short bursts thus need special wiring. This stove uses a battery which is trickle charged
The temperature sensor uses thermal balancing
Expensive though

Half a day spent GPU Vulkan compute shader debugging with Renderdoc. I managed to narrow it down to a few parts of the code, only to realise that although I calculated a variable I forgot to then use it in initialising a struct.
One Fricking Single Line Fricking Fix for 1/2 a day!
Oh, Renderdoc is ace by the way.

Vulkan question: when creating multiple pipelines with vkCreateComputePipelines which are all specializations of the same shader code with the same pipeline layout do drivers optimise this better than I could by just submitting each creation to a task on a separate thread?
I'm testing this right now on the hardware & platforms I have, but was wondering if others had wider experience with this.

I really wish banks and governments would somehow distinguish in their emails between "there is an important document in your inbox, sign in to read" which is just a regular update you likely already know (monthly statement with balance information etc.), and one which could have severe consequences if you don't read it.
I get that privacy and security principles prevent them from sending the actual information, but one would have thought some meta data could be added.

@nprofile…40t9 In my case the frustum code change was fairly small, as I cull against projected planes. There are a few rendering tricks for orthographic cube rendering which you could use to improve the occlusion culling performance, but I don't have the links to hand.

@nprofile…40t9 These single reflections are pretty cheap once you go down the ray tracing path. It's things like diffuse bounces, multiple reflections and volumetric scattering which can kill performance. That and traversing a deep data structure (which is somewhat needed to fit entire large maps in VRAM).

Here I compare the same render with one where I modified the water material to make it opaque and rough. With no reflections the shadows on the surface can now be observed. In the first image reflections dominate.

@nprofile…40t9 With OpenGL I saw a large performance increase by putting all uniforms for all drawcalls in one buffer and binding the buffer range per draw rather than changing buffer each draw. I have now forgotten how to do this with older DX versions.

Reducing state changes is also a huge win - put all your vertex/index buffers in one buffer, all your textures in another (or texture array), all your uniforms/constants in another (if possible on API) etc.

@nprofile…40t9 Drawing more than one 'draw call' in a draw call using an array of structs with the draw data. In OpenGL this is glMultiDrawElementsIndirect and DirectX has Indirect Drawing.
For non GPU driven rendering you can get close to the same performance just looping over drawcalls on the CPU but not changing any state.

@nprofile…40t9 I don't use greedy meshing in Avoyd (my voxels are not always pure block voxels) but I do use triangle reduction using a variant on Stan Melax's BunnyLOD Polygon Reduction https://github.com/dougbinks/BunnyLOD
Reducing the vertex/triangle count for rendering is about a 1.2x performance bonus for Minecraft like scenes. There are also memory reduction benefits and due to the way I allocate this can improve multidraw and lead to > 2x performance benefits.

@nprofile…zdn5 One higher level question I have about undo/redo in editors which I rarely see discussed is whether it should be global to the scene or local to the object being edited. For simplicity I think it should be global.
This then raises the question of whether non scene state should be part of the undo/redo system: for example is the entity selection part of it? What about the GUI state (window position + open state)?

Thanks to Joshua Alston ImGui_Markdown now has improved formatting via formatFlags in the config. For backwards compatability these default to being off, so do try out the new styling or just set your config to use ImGuiMarkdownFormatFlags_GithubStyle or ImGuiMarkdownFormatFlags_CommonMarkAll if you want to pick up any future changes automatically.

I recommend anyone who distributes slides from a presentation to export the slides as a .pdf with the notes (if you have them). This is the most useful approach, and if you have extra time you can add a few comments to the notes first! Go for list style information over prosaic text.
If you have videos you can zip them up with the pdf.
LibreOffice in notes reading mode can usually read most formats, but it is still imperfect and no video/animation.

Some people say you have to learn to use AI/LLMs or you will be left behind in your career by those who can.
I have noticed with my experience in helping people on the internet is that I am *far* better than them at using internet search to find a correct answer. This is not due to my ability to use the search tool, it is because my domain experience helps me to both create search phrases and quickly interpret results.
Domain experience beats tool experience. AI/LLM use works against that.

The plethora of AI/LLM content is seriously eroding my trust in what I see/read on the internet. Not only is AI/LLM content drowning our knowledge space with slop, but it's also making it harder to know what is and isn't genuine.
For example is this bug really AI/LLM fabricated or is it a genuine report badly translated?
Given how badly we were already struggling with post-truth media and politicians this seems really dangerous.

I used this when doing research to farm out processing to a bunch of servers in the department. For large data processing with no real latency requirement it worked really well.

Wayland's "you can only swap when we say" strikes again (on some compositors):

This is intended as a simple format for exchanging voxel scenes, models and animations etc. There will be a binary voxel data representation with some compression, but extremely highly compressed voxel data is not a primary goal.
So OpenVDB on its own does not solve this, plus it is far from simple.

Open Voxel File Format conversation going fairly well for this sort of open niche discussion.

If you're resident in the UK and considering working abroad be aware that the recent budget removed the ability for those working abroad to pay Class 2 voluntary NI contributions, so you'd need to pay the more expensive Class 3.
Also, be aware that many countries won't pay you a pension unless you work there for more than a certain period of time (but you often still pay into that countries scheme).

Note that this is not intended to be a highly compressed voxel data format, but more a way to get models and scenes from one app to another along with materials, scene hierarchy, transforms and animation.

Spent some time today looking at another Wayland event issue in GLFW I can't replicate:

Do note that the linked code in that issue is *really* rough.
It appears that an event is being read from the file descriptor to a queue but not dispatched to the event handlers. This appears not to be in GLFW code, but potentially driver code for eglSwapBuffers.

@nprofile…yspl I mentioned that in the start of the discussion under USD since usdVOL uses OpenVDB. I think it's a bit too complicated a format for my intended use.
