They're on their way to Cardassia Prime to broker a peace deal. Oh, wait. Nope. They've been diverted to deliver diplomatic trinkets to Gelrak V, a minor (in the Federation scheme of things) planet. ππΎ Ransom tries to silver lining the situation. Captain Freeman is not having it, and is angry about the disrespect of it all. She wants to prove the Cerritos deserves top tier assignments, and that the crew isn't a bunch of slackers. ππΎ Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi complete an assignment. Mariner then orders margaritas from the food replicator. Higher ups don't know how long assignments actually take to complete. So, the lower decks crew indulges in buffer time -- exaggerating how long something takes to do, enjoying some free time, then reporting the assignment as complete earlier than expected. Boimler disapproves of buffer time, but still does it. ππΎ Captain Freeman is on a rampage. She hears the phrase "buffer time." while railing at any crew member she sees who isn't working. Freeman doesn't know what buffer time means. ππΎ During a turbo lift ride with Freeman, Boimler lists everything he has accomplished that day, and inadvertently mentions buffer time. Freeman demands to know what buffer time means. Uh, oh. No way Boimler doesn't crumple and tell her. ππΎ He crumpled. Freeman orders all tasks to have a mandated time limit for completion, and failure to do so will be dealt with harshly. No more buffer time. The timed assignments are stacked one after another. The lower decks crew think they can handle losing buffer time. ππΎ One week later. Chaos! Shoddily done or incomplete tasks. An exhausted and confused crew. Except Boimler, who is in his element. He completes all of his assignments in the allotted time, and asks for more. ππΎ The Cerritos arrives at Gelrak V. Ransom and Mariner are part of the away team delivering the trinkets. Exhausted, Ensign Vendome brings the wrong trinket, a wood fertility trinket meant for the planet Mavok Prime. The Gelrakians love crystals, hate wood. And, Mavok Prime is their enemy. ππΎ The Gelrakians attack the away team using spears. Ransom won't allow the use of phasers. The Gelrakians capture the away team. ππΎ Things are even more of a mess on the Cerritos. Even on the bridge. ππΎ Gelrakian ships attack the Cerritos using boarding pods. Freeman orders that the intruders be repelled, and that all assignments still be completed on time. The Gelrakians, armed only with swords and spears, are rampaging over the exhausted Cerritos crew. ππΎ On Gelrak V, Ransom and Mariner are butting heads about their lack of respect for each others behavior. The Gelrakian leader offers a chance to fight their champion, named Vindor, and if Starfleet wins, the away team can go free. If not, the away team is doomed. ππΎ Both Mariner and Ransom volunteer to fight Vindor. Ransom injures Mariner's foot, and enters the arena. Mariner thinks they're doomed. ππΎ Whoa. Ransom got skills. And, muscles. He defeats the Gelrakian champion. ππΎ On the Cerritos, Boimler is attacked by some spear wielding Gelrakians. Using his phaser, Boimler handily defeats them. He heads to the bridge, to tell the captain how easy it is to beat the Gelrakians. The bridge crew is an exhausted mess like the rest of the crew, due to the new assignment timing. ππΎ The Gelrakians continue to dominate the Cerritos crew, and deface the ship with graffiti. Boimler convinces Freeman that the crew works best without such a tight scheduling mandate. Freed from following the tightly timed schedule, the crew takes down the Gelrakians and chases them off the ship. ππΎ Ransom defeats Vindor, and the away team is freed. ππΎ Later, an away team returns to Gelrak V with the correct diplomatic trinket. ππΎ Dr. T'Ana bandages up Mariner in the Cerritos sick bay. Mariner and Ransom reconcile their differences. Then, Ransom has Mariner thrown in the brig for not rolling down the sleeves of her uniform. ππΎ Pleased with Boimler's insights, Freeman institutes a new rule, called the Boimler Effect. Shortcuts are allowed, even encouraged, as long as assignments are done. Rule loving Boimler is not loving a rule about softening rules being named after him. Too late. It's a done deal. ππΎ Tendi and Rutherford tell Boimler not to worry about it. The rule will be forgotten in no time. ππΎ In the far future, the Boimler Effect is still remembered, with Boimler being considered the laziest and most corner-cutting officer in Starfleet history. Ouch. In this future time, we also learn that perhaps the most important person in Starfleet history is Chief Miles O'Brien. An interesting and fun episode on different levels. Based on TOS and TNG, the USS Enterprise is the exemplary starship and command in Starfleet. Other captains had to feel some frustration that their command, starship, and crew didn't get anywhere near that level of recognition, regardless of how important, or well done, their tasks. At least, not in the TV series. Add to that California class starships, like the Cerritos, were support ships, meaning they were considered to be less than compared to some other ship classes. I can understand Freeman's frustration at having a chance at a top tier mission not only being snatched away at the last minute, but to have it replaced with a "get around to it whenever" mission of delivering diplomatic trinkets. Also, that the Cerritos lower decks crew organically did the same thing as Scotty (TOS) and O'Brien (TNG and DS9). At times, exaggerating the amount of time needed to complete a task. Captain Freeman re-learned to appreciate her crew in this episode. Even though the Cerritos didn't get more respect. The report about how spear carrying Gelrakians managed to temporarily overwhelm the Cerritos crew was likely an interesting read. There were nods to previous Star Trek, and learning more about some of the Lower Decks characters. Especially Ransom, who is more than what he seemed to be to this point. Ransom, in his own way, has it on the ball as an officer. π Welcome to Star Trek! π -- That in the future, Chief O'Brien being considered perhaps the most important person in Starfleet history. @nprofileβ¦8qnv #LowerDecksRewatch npub1thndhmxvjdrf5xadxp5m0rqflcd70uh3u6dpz8c380gums6s2znqps4t57 Nmyownworld ππΎ Keiko put up with a lot, and sacrificed a lot. If she wants to move to Earth, then the O'Briens should move to Earth. As much as I hate to see the Bashir and Chief O'Brien bromance become long distance, I'm not mad about it. ππΎ Nerys and Odo had amazing platonic friend energy that developed over time. No romantic chemistry between the two came through for me, though. ππΎ Worf and Ezri had a little romantic chemistry. ππΎ Bashir and Ezri had very little romantic chemistry. Their relationship seemed forced. ππΎ Bashir and Garak had a lot of romantic chemistry. ππΎ As much as I loved Worf in TNG, I side-eyed his joining DS9. But, I was wrong. He was a good fit, and brought a lot of wonderful to the series. As the character, and with the subsequent Klingon connections. ππΎ Nog had the best character arc of the series. ππΎ Sisko had the second best character arc of the series. From father, grieving widower, and Starfleet officer who was more patronizing than anything about the Bajoran religion, to becoming the Emissary in all ways. While running the space station, raising his "I don't want to join Starfleet" son (who turned out to be a good man), dealing with his "I didn't want you to join Starfleet" wonderful father, and all the conflicts Sisko dealt with, large and small. Sisko is an icon. ππΎ Quark gave Ferengi depth and interest. After their introduction in TNG, Ferengi were never going to be seen as Klingon or Romulan level threats. But, Quark moved them out of the slapstick comedy only box. Rom gave Ferengi heart and soul, once the writing stop treating him as a walking, talking joke. ππΎ Kira Nerys is just all kinds of awesome. Perfection. ππΎ Ditto for Garak. No notes. ππΎ Dukat was a delightful, love to hate, antagonist. Mark Alaimo's acting, and the writers, kept Dukat from being a one dimensional, moustache twirling, cliche. ππΎ Louise Fletcher gave a master class in acting with Winn Adami. She took viewers on a roller coaster ride. Distrusting an outsider being declared the Emissary. All kinds of manipulative, with a side of being murder-y. Contrite (for Winn) once Sisko is undeniably proven to be the Emissary. Resentful of both the Emissary -- Winn is Bajoran and thinks she is pious, so wonders why the Prophets never speak to her, and the Bajoran rebels tended to dismiss Winn's efforts during the Cardassian occupation. Winn has a redemption of sorts at the end, but she was a terrible person, and a fascinating character. ππΎ Damar had a redemption, of sorts. For the longest, Damar was just a sneering Cardassian, angry about not being able to continue subjugating Bajorans. He did take a stand against the Dominion for the sake of Cardassians, and will likely be remembered by Cardassians as a hero, but for non-Cardassians he was an awful person who did terrible things. ππΎ Martok is a wonderful character, with a hell of an arc. I enjoyed every moment that Martok was onscreen. ππΎ Gowron is another wonderful character, but I'm not loving how his arc ended. He usually demonstrated a thoughtfulness for the outcome of his actions. Not as noble as Martok, but not as shady as the Duras sisters. Yet, in his final appearance, he's willing to allow the severe weakening of the Klingon empire, and the possibility of the Dominion controlling the Alpha quadrant, because Gowron feels threatened by Martok's combat successes. That didn't ring true. I like Gowron. I didn't like his ending. ππΎ Penny Johnson Jerald as Kasidy Yates was totally believable as someone who Sisko could share his life with. And, Ms. Jerald matched and melded with Avery Brooks' powerful acting. ππΎ During DS9's first run, I did not like Ezri. The character, not the actor. 28 years after first being introduced to the character, I decided to give Ezri another try. Without the influence of Jadzia's demise being a recent event and sore spot, I still do not like Ezri. I think the writers tried too hard to differentiate Ezri from Jadzia, when Ezri's start as a host was enough. A young Trill, with zero training to be a host, suddenly becomes the host of Dax the symbiote. That's a treasure trove of story possibilities. Searching out Sisko made sense to me. Sisko was close to two of the Dax hosts. But, the overt attempts to show Ezri was not Jadzia v2.0 were tedious and off-putting. ππΎ Honorable mention: Broca. Broca was a Cardassian, a puppet put into place by the Dominion after Damar rebelled. Broca was so far out of his depth. He knew he was a token Cardassian the Dominion used to try and keep the populace in line. Despite his obsequious actions and words, Broca quickly learned that tokens get spent. Mel Johnson Jr.'s portrayal of Broca made an only around for a hot minute character memorable. ππΎ The Weyouns. Jeffrey Combs made me love them. ππΎ Brock Peters as Joseph Sisko, and Cirroc Lofton as Jake Sisko. I love these characters. While Joseph, Benjamin, and Jake Sisko are three distinct individuals, there's a thread of familial love, caring, respect, and at times, disagreement, that rang true throughout the series. They were family in the best sense. I am disappointed that there was not a scene with Joseph Sisko in the final episode. I'm sure he had thoughts about his son being with the Prophets, his new daughter-in-law, and the prospect of another grandchild. This isn't an exhaustive list. There are other characters I love -- like Ishka, and interesting characters -- like Tain. I'm mostly satisfied with the DS9 series finale. Many of the characters going their separate ways at that point made sense. The Dominion war was over. The Klingons were friends with the Federation, again. The Romulans were sort of friends with the Federation. It was a good time for some characters to pursue new opportunities. Bajor hadn't yet joined the Federation by the end of DS9, but that made sense. Bajor was still re-building from the Cardassian occupation. The Cardassians had just become less of a threat due to that society's near annihilation. Bajor running to sign up with the Federation as soon as the Dominion war ended wouldn't have rang true to me. Not the least of reasons being Bajor making it through that war by not joining the Federation. I can see that giving the Bajorans pause. Odo's fate is iffy for me. I get that Odo would want to save his people. The Changelings were alien enough that I could buy them giving up on trying to dominate, well, everything and everyone. But, the idea that the Federation, especially Starfleet, would allow Odo to cure his people rang false to me. The Federation could be hella shady, from TOS onward. Case in point, they tried genocide as a way to stop the Dominion. Even though healing Odo's people was likely part of the treaty, I still don't fully buy the Federation going along with it. My least favorite part of the finale was Benjamin Sisko's fate. Okay, the Emissary won the day for the Prophets. Bye-bye Pah-wraiths, forever (supposedly). The Prophets snatched Sisko from the jaws of death. So that he could ... I don't know what. Was his ending up in the realm of the Prophets a better conclusion than the Prophets putting him back with Kasidy and Jake? For me, no. The Prophets are very powerful. There seemed to be little, if anything, they couldn't do. Sure, there's lots they aren't willing to do, but that's not the same as being incapable. Sisko told Kasidy something along the lines of he could return in a year, or yesterday. Okay. So, why didn't the "we don't live by linear time" Prophets return Sisko to that moment with Kasidy, with Sisko changed by whatever the heck the Prophets had him doing. Eh. It's just an unsatisfying part of the finale for me. All in all, I think Star Trek: Deep Space 9 is an outstanding series, with an amazing cast and creative team work. I enjoy it! Thank you for taking time to read my thoughts. ππΎ CC: @nprofileβ¦8qnv #StarTrek #DS9 npub1thndhmxvjdrf5xadxp5m0rqflcd70uh3u6dpz8c380gums6s2znqps4t57 Nmyownworld @nprofileβ¦53r7 suggested doing a Star Trek: Lower Decks re-watch together. The details are in this link: https://tenforward.social/@[email protected] /114195998852748628 , I love Lower Decks, and delight in doing a re-watch. I'm behind on posting, but intend to catch up. I'll write up episodes in terms of my first impression of the episodes. I'm posting on my Nmyownworld TenForward.social account, rather than my starbase80.wtf/@Still_Nimmy account. Here I go! Season 1, Episode 1, "Second Contact" ππΎ The first animated Star Trek series since TAS (1973). This one starts in 2380, during the late TNG and DS9 time. ππΎ This show is a humorous Star Trek series. Set on the starship the USS Cerritos. ππΎ Is Mariner old enough to be allowed to get drunk? ππΎ I'm loving Boimler's purple color hair. ππΎ An Orion in Starfleet. She is very up in attitude. Hi Ensign Tendi! ππΎ Ensign Boimler is a rule follower. Ensign Mariner is a maverick. ππΎ A newly cybornetically enhanced ensign named Rutherford. ππΎ So, Starfleet tucks ensigns away in a series of hallways of bunks. ππΎ Okay, I'm loving Mariner's energy. ππΎ Boimler is so nervous about being on the bridge. ππΎ Commander Ransom is second in command of the Cerritos. ππΎ Carol Freeman, captain of the Cerritos. She has it in for Mariner, and wants Boimler to spy on Mariner during an away mission, and report any violations Mariner commits. Hmm. ππΎ Uh oh, Ransom has brought a contagion onto the Cerritos. People are turning into black goo spewing murder zombies. Rutherford is on a date with Ensign Barnes, but they don't let the emergency interfere with their date. ππΎ The Chief Medical officer of the Cerritos is a Caitian named TAna. She's very direct. ππΎ Mariner is caught by Boimler violating Starfleet policy. But, Mariner is trying to help Galardonian farmers by giving them farming tools. ππΎ Mariner has served on five starships, but is still an ensign. She has a lot more experience than Boimler, even though they seem to be about the same age. ππΎ I think Mariner and Boimler are in their very early 20s. ππΎ The Monkees are considered a classical band in the future. Right on. ππΎ Rutherford is more interested in engineering irregularities than in his date. ππΎ "You'll be fine. Doc'll wave a light over it." Lol! ππΎ Boimler hero worships the senior ship staff. Mariner, not so much. She is much more pragmatic and critical of the senior ship staff. Reasons for conflict between Mariner and Captain Freeman are becoming clear. ππΎ Boimler intends to report Mariner's actions with the Galardonians to Freeman. ππΎ Mariner and Boimler transport back to the Cerritos, in the midst of the infection and chaos. Boimler is disregarded, and disrespected, by the senior crew members. ππΎ Boimler's run in with a large spider-like creature the Galadorians keep as cattle resulted in his being covered in slime. The slime has the cure for the infection running rampant on the Cerritos. ππΎ T'Ana synthesizes a cure from the slime. The senior staff congratulates themselves, and continue to ignore Boimler. Mariner stands up for Boimler, but her words are ignored, except by Boimler. ππΎ Wait, an infected Vulcan crew member has black slime on their face that looks like the Terran universe Spock's beard (TOS "Mirror, Mirror" s2e4). I wonder how many more easter eggs there are in Lower Decks. ππΎ Boimler is in Freeman's office to report. He has to listen to her give all credit for solving the problem of the infection. And, she calls Boimler by the wrong name. Boimler doesn't tell on Mariner. ππΎ Freeman gets a call from a Starfleet admiral. The two discuss what to do about Mariner. Wait. Mariner is Captain Freeman and that admiral's daughter! ππΎ In the Cerritos lounge, Tendi and Rutherford bond over engineering chat. Boimler admits to Mariner's strong points, and tells her that he didn't tell on her. ππΎ Lower decks! Lower decks! I think the show is humorous, with some laugh out loud moments. All without disrespecting Star Trek or its fandom. A sort of reverent irreverence. That's a tough road to walk, but I think this episode does it successfully. A lot is packed into this 24 minutes long episode. Introducing new Star Trek characters, and the USS Cerritos. Touching base with Star Trek mentions from TOS through TNG. I think it was all done successfully. It didn't feel rushed or crowded to me. There are likely more easter eggs that I missed. I think this is a fun series that respects Star Trek, while giving a look at a Starfleet ship and crew that isn't considered the crowning glory of Starfleet, say like Enterprise ships and captains. But still fulfills an important aspect of keeping things running smoothly in the quadrant. The title is an homage to the TNG episode, "Lower Decks" (s7 e15) which was about Enterprise-D crew members who weren't part of the command crew. That theme is carried over to this series, this time with humor. I like this episode! #LowerDecksRewatch #StarTrek #LowerDecks npub1thndhmxvjdrf5xadxp5m0rqflcd70uh3u6dpz8c380gums6s2znqps4t57 Nmyownworld @nprofileβ¦f0x4 Alt text. I was happy that DSC presented a normal, loving, gay married couple. Then Hugh is murdered in season one's "Despite Yourself." WTH. I was furious. I thought instead of representation with dignity and normalcy, Hugh and Stamets' relationship was being treated as a disposable plot point. That episode was first shown January, 2018. Showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts immediately said, "We will see Dr. Culber again. He is not 100% dead," in that episode's After Trek. Still, Hugh doesn't truly return for over a year, not until DSC season two's "Saints of Imperfection" is first shown in February, 2019. I only waited the time it took me to binge watch DSC to see Hugh's return. I have no idea how first time viewers who had to wait a year to see Hugh's return did not just implode from frustration. npub1thndhmxvjdrf5xadxp5m0rqflcd70uh3u6dpz8c380gums6s2znqps4t57 Nmyownworld Wilson Cruz as Hugh Culber Starfleet officer who serves as a doctor, and a counselor, on the USS Discovery. However, much of the new information is Osyraa specific, and not necessarily Orion-based traits and behaviors. πΈ Osyraa has enough influence in the Emerald Chain to indulge her anger towards Starfleet. The Emerald Chain conducts military exercises near Kaminar, a UFP member world and Saru's home planet. Osyraa promised retribution against Starfleet after being thwarted in "The Sanctuary." Saru, as captain of the USS Discovery, was instrumental in preventing Osyraa from attaining her goals in that episode. πΈ In her ship, The Viridian, Osyraa stalked the USS Discovery to the Verubin Nebula using the dangerous method of transwarp tunnels to get there. She is willing to risk herself, and her crew, to complete her plan. πΈ Osyraa knows of the USS Discovery's unusual propulsion system, the spore drive and Stamets' importance to working it, and she intends to take it. Information possibly gained by the Emerald Chain, or Osyraa herself, using a spy network within Starfleet. πΈ Osyraa was able to track the USS Discovery to the Verubin Nebula, but did not know why the ship was there. Her knowledge about the USS Discovery's itinerary is current, but limited. πΈ The Emerald Chain has the technology to cloak The Viridian. And, the technology to transport to the USS Discovery when the Starfleet ship's shield strength is low. πΈ Osyraa takes over the USS Discovery very quickly, and without casualties. She knew where to direct her soldiers to efficiently commandeer the USS Discovery. As well as the basics of how an over 900 year old, one of a kind starship functions. #LowerDecksOrions #StarTrek #DSC #DIS
