I get get. It's not easy and it needs regular attention. I've lost a total of about 180k sats to force closes, the bulk of it last year during the ordinal craze. I'm still net positive over the 4 year period but it's rough.

In my ~4 years experience of running a node, I haven't experienced any critical issues. That's obviously a sample size bias because I've also seen others have to deal with difficult situations in recovering funds. Off the top of my head, maybe less than a dozen of those cases out of thousands of nodes and node runners I've interacted with directly or indirectly over the years.
My cln peers are among the most stable and consistent. Eclair is behind the biggest node in the network that has been heavily battle tested since the LN's inception.
I agree it's a complex machine that gets even more complex when more software gets built on top and potentially opens up new vulnerabilities. That said, I would argue that it is production ready based on my own experience.

Canadian provinces tariff each other worse than they do the US, along with the generally high barrier to entry imposed by the liquor boards. It's just depressing.
From what I've heard at least in Quebec, if someone makes a special request to the liquor commission to import a wine not currently stocked, they would actually reach out directly to you, Peony Lane, for example, to purchase your wine. There's a minimum quantity and all that but it's not impossible.
Need to drum up interest in Quebec enough for individuals to come together to buy it, or maybe a restaurant that caters to bitcoiners.

Sci-hub isn't so much a "write" platform as it is a "read" platform. Self-publishing these days more often takes the form of depositing pre-prints to things like arxiv/bioarxiv prior to peer-review, and then the journal just scrapes that paper onto their own platform once accepted.

Trending/not trending is not really relevant for me since the impact of research can take years/decades to pop off. Yoshua Bengio is a great example of this. Nobody cared about all the fundamental ML algorithms he was coming up with in the 1990s/2000s until deep learning took off in early 2010s and those old publications were suddenly getting cited thousands of times a year.
The transparency and openess that comes with searchability and possibility for public discussion are much more interesting to me. They go hand-in-hand.

A big drag on this evolution will likely come from the parasitic science publishing industry, but probably also from funding agencies, and even the researchers themselves to an extent. The publishing monopoloy gets fat margins for doing essentially nothing aside from hosting. They do none of the research/validation/peer review/advocating. Funding agencies will complain that they don't have any other way to decide which research to fund because they rely so heavily on manufactured metrics by the publishing industry. Academics might be reluctant to change when their careers are on the line.
Surely you've thought about these issues before, so I'm curious to hear what you think.

Agreed. Basically any academic I interact with has at one time or another complained about the issues with the current paradigm for disseminating scientific work. I'm not talking about politically charged research, just genuine scientists in apolitical fields trying to push the boundaries of knowledge.
Content through nostr is the kind of thing they subconsciously know they need but they just haven't seen the potential for nostr yet.

Okay I see what you mean. To me the gold standard really is just plaintext. For scientific reporting, you can mark up reports with simple tools like asciidoc. So now you have a format-agnostic presentation that can be consumed any way you like, transmitted through essentially anything you like, for example Nostr or whatever offline reader.
Quite the opposite from saying "this is the (probably DRM'd) format, it has text embedded, and you can only use X/Y/Z (probably locked/closed/restricted) app to consume it".

The UX in building software that way makes more sense to me. Many times I've been overwhelmed by giant configs, not really knowing what it's all for, and inevitably breaking something because the values I choose are apparently unexpected.
On the other hand, sane defaults let me do stuff immediately. I can then figure out all the biases and tweak as necessary later.

Scientific writing is an essential part of my fiat mining but I'm really slow and unproductive at it compared to other things I have to do. I know my work inside and out but getting it on paper is a real struggle for me, even after years of doing it. I figured out that it hits me at odd times of the day where I'll get an hour of solid writing that I'm happy with but drops off a cliff otherwise.
I just get started on my writing weeks /months in advance but just tap into those moments of clarity for hyperproductive writing and just do other stuff in between.
Takes a bit of time to figure out what works but keeping at it is the most important part.

Working on a manuscript submission to a scientific journal recently. Their website is full of statements about how submissions must adhere to "their principles" of open acces, open source, transparency in funding and conflicts of interest, and on and on.
At the end of all that, they're happy to charge me $4000 USD just for the privilege of hosting my paper and telling me it's "quality research published in their prestigious journal". They do none of the funding, none of the research, none of the peer review, none of the advocacy. They pidgeon-hole me into using expensive, closed-source, soul-sucking software for writing such that institutions literally have no choice but to be captured. They display my work in ways that are no more innovative than print.
The parasitic monopoly of scientific publishing is overripe for disruption by something superior like #nostr.

Politically savvy in what way? Like positioning in a way that helps bring in more research grants, or maybe politically savvy by choosing to be a researcher in a "hot topic" field? Or maybe a mix of the two?
In any case, my own experience in the academic fiat mines over the years is that researchers are like entrepreneurs in a way. They constantly have to be advocating for their work and their teams. Bigger research groups tend to publish more by virtue of being bigger, which brings in more grants. Being a researcher in a hot topic field also helps to get the ears of funding agencies but it's also hyper competitive because there are so many academics for so few funding dollars that it's a race to the bottom. It really is just a constant grind to keep research going, students going, papers published, peer reviews done, conference attendances to disseminate research, grant applications done, juggling institution politics, and on and on.
