I'll always agree execution matters more than the idea. No arguments there. I think we also agree that at the end of the day, the relay operator (and client to some extent) can always accept or deny whatever content they choose.
I think what I'm trying to get at is: classification does not mean censorship. None of the NIPs related to reporting (self or otherwise) suggest relays or clients should act one way or the other. So that's why I don't see what all the fuss is about.

With regards to incorrect self-tagging, yeah that sucks. Some people will get that wrong. I don't think removing all options for self-tagging is a good idea though. And that's where a common language goes a long way to helping relays and clients know what they are dealing with.
As for gaming the reporting, that will always be a risk, for sure. But it's not intractable. Reputation goes a long way, operators and moderators can be weary of reports from pub keys that have no history on their relay, etc. Tooling is key here.
When you say "you can even moderate, and censor your community with your own rules" and then say "it doesn't belong [...] arbitrary moderators making decisions", how are you reconciling those two ideas?

I don't understand. Hasn't the argument for these classifications always been that they are optional to enforce? I don't see why having common language to describe the problem is an issue. Relay operators are always free to use or ignore them.

The thing is, it's not really about the code. Git is already distributed by design. You always have a local copy and backing up is as simple as throwing repos on a USB drive. So I don't think the analogy is quite right.
What GitHub excels at is the "social" side of code. Issues, pull requests, discovery. Those are important aspects, of course, and why it's so popular.

I guess I'm gonna be a grinch on 4/20, but I'm so happy I stopped smoking weed habitually (read: daily) in the past year. I'm less anxious, more productive, and overall happier.
It's fun every now and then, but I know a few people who are still stuck in the daily habit and have convinced themselves it helps them. When I see the dramatic difference in their mood during breaks and the same in my own experience, it's pretty obvious weed ain't all that good for you.

It's just the addition of a static JSON file. There's no technical reason why it would make it less safe. Unless you are thinking of increased exposure? Even then, I'm struggling to see the concern.

The client just sees a response from the relay. It cant know for certain the action was executed. Relay could be like "lol ok sure we'll delete it" and just not.

Is it just me or is cloud VM orchestration still lacking? I'm thinking more about the provisioning of the software itself, not the instance.
Terraform gets us mostly there but what I actually want to run on the machine is still defined by a hodgepodge of systemd unit files loaded into a packer built image, and finalized with volume mount checks in the user data script, lots of chown statements, all with a shit ton of extra crap in the OS I actually don't need or care about.
Seems like there is so much focus on running things with Kubernetes. Half of the time, I'm not even sure I need k8s. I just want an easy way to define a VM, and the software on top of it, maybe with some simple logging solution. There is still a surprising amount of this that has to be done manually or in a bespoke way.
