Packagist.org turns 15! Since monolog/monolog became package #1 on September 27, 2011, Composer has installed packages from Packagist.org more than 200 billion times.
1 billion of those installs are phpunit/phpunit alone, not counting PHPUnit's dependencies.
Thank you, @nprofile…5xhe, @nprofile…lu4u, and your team at Packagist Conductors GmbH, as well as everyone who has contributed to Composer, for maintaining and advancing this critical piece of PHP ecosystem infrastructure.

Somehow I completely missed this milestone: PHPUnit has now been installed via Composer more than 1,005,280,071 times. 🤯
One billion installs. Thank you to everyone who writes tests, reports bugs, sends pull requests, and supports the project. ❤️

As of today, PHPUnit 8.5, 9.6, 10.5, 11.5, 12.5, 13.3, and the main branch are also tested with PHP 8.7, which will be released in Q4 2027.

Nobody decides whether a language is modern.
What gets decided is whether you can bet a decade on it: who owns it, how upgrades arrive, how it scales, and whether you can still hire for it in year six.
This article holds PHP to the criteria an architecture decision is actually made on:

"I used PHP the last time 10/15/20 years ago. Back then I did not like it. Change my mind. What has recently changed?"
That is how quite a few conversations start at the @nprofile…9pgr booth here at FrOSCon today.
Turns out writing this article last week was good preparation: https://phpunit.expert/articles/four-out-of-five.html?ref=mastodon
No "PHP is not dead" rhetoric in it, just the language measured against the criteria designers of modern languages consider essential. Four out of five.

How does PHP in 2026 compare with the current ideas about designing modern languages?
This article takes stock of the criteria of closures, objects, pattern matching, generics, and an unconventional answer to the question of extensibility:

@nprofile…qp6c Thanks for the PSA!
I don't consider it a problem, though: PHPCOV and PHPUnit are meant to be used together, so I'd expect them to be updated together. If you're using both, why would you upgrade one and not the other?

A car manufacturer lists an Android botnet in its open source attribution. The entry gives away how the list was made: by scanning instead of by declaring.

Every branch in your repository is a door. Some who knock are in disguise, a helpful-looking PR that quietly edits your CI configuration.
That's Poisoned Pipeline Execution. SolarWinds, PyTorch, tj-actions: every trail leads back to a YAML file in a workflow folder.
My new article asks a different question first: do we even need this branch? The safest door is the one that was never built.

Wrong. Fuzz testing found one almost instantly.

I just released #PHPUnit 13.1.
As always when I publish a new release, I feel the weight of maintainership on my shoulders.
Because I know that every new version of PHPUnit gets installed hundreds or thousands of times within minutes, and millions of people rely on it to test their software reliably.

Here is the problem with most PHPUnit questions: you either get answers from outdated blog posts, conflicting StackOverflow threads, or AI that confidently gives you the wrong solution.
So I am doing something different.
PHPUnit Office Hours: one hour each month where you can ask your questions directly to the person who created the framework in 2000 and still maintains it today.
Your real-world challenges. Your specific codebase. Live answers you can trust.

S(c|p)am of the day: the PHPUnit HR department sent me an invite for my annual performance evaluation.
Will I be fired? Will I get a raise? Who knows. I'm so excited!

I have just published #PHPUnit versions 11.5.44 and 12.4.3.
These are the first releases to use GitHub's new "Immutable Releases" feature, which means that the associated Git tag cannot be changed after publication.
This hopefully improves security and makes supply chain attacks slightly more difficult.

2025-11-11 06:23:13 GMT

Imagine if the package registries and #OpenSource components that you use were no longer available.
Would you still be able to deliver a single line of code? Would your software even start, or would your business come to a standstill within minutes?

It's November 1st, and the GitHub Sponsors cancellations have arrived like clockwork. I'm never sure why: financial constraints, technical issues like expired cards, or something else?
The reality: I depend on these sponsorships to keep working on PHPUnit. If PHPUnit is essential to your work, please consider supporting it. Your sponsorship directly enables me to continue maintaining the tools you rely on.
Thank you to everyone who does sponsor. 💙

I have just released new versions of PHPUnit 8.5, PHPUnit 9.6, PHPUnit 10.5, PHPUnit 11.5, and PHPUnit 12.3.
These new versions (as well as new versions of some of their dependencies) no longer use functionality that was deprecated for PHP 8.5 within the last 24 hours or so. This should make testing your code with PHP 8.5 easier.
How is your Sunday going?

I encourage everyone to read the release notes for PHP-CS-Fixer 3.80.0:
https://github.com/PHP-CS-Fixer/PHP-CS-Fixer/releases/tag/v3.80.0
Tools such as @nprofile…eegx, @nprofile…wjwc, or @nprofile…vcse are vital for the #PHP ecosystem.
I try to do my part as best as I can to support new PHP versions as early as possible in PHPUnit. Because others expect it from me and I expect it from myself.
Would I have loved for PHP-CS-Fixer to support PHP 8.4? Yes. Do I feel like I have the right to complain that it took so long? Hell: no.

I'm still surprised by how often I meet people who are surprised to learn that I offer consulting, coaching and training services focused on #PHPUnit and other #PHP-related topics.
I’m passionate about helping PHP development teams overcome the challenges they face, whether that's improving code quality, mastering PHPUnit or modernising their software.
If you struggle with PHP, I can help you find the right solutions. Let's work together to build better software!

2025-05-14 05:54:05 GMT

Which topics would you like me to cover in a conference session and/or training on best practices for running tests with PHPUnit in a container?
I would like to work on this, both with regard to content (see above) but also in terms of features where needed, but I need to collect common pain points, etc. first.
Thank you for your input!

I have just released #PHPUnit 11.5:
https://github.com/sebastianbergmann/phpunit/releases/tag/11.5.0
PHPUnit 11.5 is the final feature release in the PHPUnit 11 version series. Among other improvements, it brings support for doubling hooked properties, a feature that was introduced recently in #PHP 8.4.
The next major version, PHPUnit 12, will be released on February 7, 2025.
