Last Notes npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I made some progress on solving my graphics issues for #Electron apps on #Flatpak in #Debian 13 with #GNOME and #Wayland on my 2011 #iMac 27-inch: For Spotify, turning off GPU acceleration in Flatseal For Signal, copy the contents of the .desktop file into a new .desktop file in the local directory where those go, and modify the exec line to add --disable-gpuI'm not sure if I want to "fix" Slack because the "app" won't allow me to choose a browser with which to open links. It defaults to the system's default browser, which isn't what I use for the day job. Note: All of these problems also go away in an X11 session, but that breaks suspend/resume on this iMac, so I'm committed to staying in Wayland. More details when I do a post on this. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe @nprofile…rwlk @nprofile…u9hk @nprofile…975s It's way more intense to run a Fediverse server than a web server. Suspend/resume is fine on Debian 13 with GNOME/Wayland on a 2011 iMac 27-inch npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe "Is an impartial jury even possible?" Most people have no idea who Sam Altman is, and people are all over the place on Elon. I'm sure they could find a jury. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I have taken a deep dive into notetaking apps recently, and while there are some good choices that are coded in Linux/Unix-friendly frameworks like Qt and GTK, there's a lot of Electron out there in the commercially oriented apps. The best compromise I've seen, and I can't remember exact app, has been React Native that is somehow running in a Flatpak. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I now have a robots.txt that excludes the major LLMs on both https://zola.passthejoe.net and https://passthejoe.net. Both sites are under the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, and the Zola site has this additional clause: In addition to this license, content from this site is prohibited for use by artificial intelligence (AI) and large language model (LLM) systems without explicit, prior approval from the creator of this web site. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I tried both Fedora and Debian KDE recently -- both were excellent npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I'm trying suspend/resume now with Wayland. Will try to resume soon. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I'm not only looking for tips on what to do with robots.txt, but also other methods for thwarting LLMs and also any ideas regarding licensing and legal language to add to the site. I wish Creative Commons would do this for us, but they seem to be pro-AI. My own position on AI is not set in stone (though I prefer not to use it professionally, and my profession is not IT), but at this point I'm not comfortable feeding the world's for-profit beasts for $0, zero say and zero control, and I prefer to withhold my "cooperation" for the time being. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I think it has something to do with my graphics card, which is an AMD Radeon HD 6770M. I have similar issues with other Flatpak Electron apps (that's the common denominator, though Zoom runs fine). npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe Suspend/resume under #Debian has been extremely reliable on the 2011 #iMac 27-inch for a long time. I have been running Debian for so long on this hardware. I think I started with Debian 10 and have been upgrading in place ever since. Recently I switched from Wayland to X11 because some Electron-based apps are having severe graphics issues that X tends to clear up. It's mostly Signal. I gave up on Slack long ago, though I bet running X would fix that, too. But since logging in with X11, suspend/resume is broken, and I keep this desktop suspended a LOT of the time. I'm now back on Wayland. Let's see if that resolves it. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I have broken a lot of links in my time. It's something I can very much live with. I have the same content on multiple URLs. I can live with that too. That said, I'm thinking of "merging" https://zola.passthejoe.net and https://passthejoe.net. The subdomain is a #Zola site (obviously due to the URL), and the main domain is #Hugo. I currently write my new posts in Zola, so I'm leaning toward making that the SSG of choice. It does a lot of things I like; has quite a few nice, usable templates; and moves extremely slowly compared with Hugo. So I'm leaning heavily toward Zola. The Zola site has < 40 posts. The Hugo site has about 80. It's doable. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I'm exploring ways to prevent AI / LLMs from using my content without permission. I don't know if doing this for sites on a subdomain needs to be done on the main domain as well, but I'm starting with https://zola.passthejoe.net because that's the site I'm currently updating. I referred to this site for tips on what to do with robots.txt: https://www.playwire.com/blog/how-to-block-ai-bots-with-robotstxt-the-complete-publishers-guide I think I need to add an explicit license as well. I don't have one on this site yet. For the robots.txt, will it work on the subdomain without having it on the main domain? I should get it there too, but I haven't looked into that yet. #Zola makes things pretty easy. I hope #Hugo, which runs https://passthejoe.net, does, too, npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe A lot to unpack in this article. Lower standards, super high profits: #Intel reportedly says it boosted yields by selling what would normally be 'scrap' or 'low-expectation' CPUs — customers more willing to accept lesser chips due to overwhelming CPU demand | Tom's Hardware https://share.google/QSYWIvpKLg9UcIvB7 npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I booted into the live environment of #GhostBSD on my 2011 iMac 27-inch. I always forget that this Mac requires the original keyboard (I'm sure it's somewhere) or a wired USB keyboard to boot from USB. It took me a while to find one. It booted fine and looks great. Sound was a problem. Only the treble speakers were working. The bass speakers were silent. I saw a couple #FreeBSD and GhostBSD posts on potential fixes, but nothing definite. I might return to FreeBSD on this system and try to figure out the sound issue, but I'm more likely to give some other Linuxes a try first. It has run Debian 10/11/12/13 over the years. That has been very reliable. Recently some Flatpak apps (generally Electron-based) have had some graphics issues, but going from Wayland to X11 has fixed that. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe Saw a nice HP laptop at Costco. Was $1,500 but should have been $1,000. Not buying. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I'm working on the author setup on my #Zola blog. It's not like I have more authors than me, but I did code my page.html template to allow for multiple authors to appear in both posts and in the atom feed. I first set up authors as a taxonomy, but If need to mess with the atom.xml template to make that work, so I went back to authors = [""] and tested that. It works. I still only have one author, but I wanted to see it work ... https://zola.passthejoe.net/ npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I just tried it locally with zola serve, and it looks good -- I think I'm going to do it. CC: @nprofile…vhaz npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe Looks like a dark theme in #LXQt on this story. I could never make that happen in my (short) time with the DE: LXQt 2.4 Desktop Environment Released with More Wayland Improvements - 9to5Linux https://share.google/QCMmqFWIFOZhIp3zC npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I just noticed that the config on this docs page has an authors taxonomy: https://www.getzola.org/documentation/getting-started/configuration/ npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe @nprofile…vhaz I use the authors designation in front matter. I can't remember if I was ever able to figure out how to do the author by post rather than in config.toml. My thinking about making author(s) part of the taxonomies is that Zola would generate pages for all of the individual authors. That's not so valuable in a one-author site, but potentially more useful with multiple authors. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe Does anybody who has a #Hugo or #Zola blog set it up with author(s) in the taxonomy along with tags and categories? npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe Hosted #Nextcloud eliminated the barrier between the software and me using it. The question is how can we share what we're learning and doing while keeping AI out of it? npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe Before Bluefin, I had no idea that alt-tab behavior was configurable. The "traditional" GNOME config for alt-tab was driving me mad. I had hand pain from alt-~ (or was it alt-esc? ... I can't remember) to switch apps before alt-tab to switch windows. Having alt-tab do all windows on the desktop regardless of app is much better for me. CC: @nprofile…eg5v npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe For me, using any new system provides an opportunity to learn different ways of doing things. I pick up little things every time I make a switch. Configs, apps, fonts. I went from Silverblue to Aeon to Bluefin. I am very much NOT a cloud-native developer. I'm just a dabbler, and I do that in Distrobox. I really like having Distrobox, Toolbox and Brew all in the base -- all great choices. If Silverblue had put Distrobox in its base, I probably would have never left. It's the custom home directories per container that I wanted. I don't have Bluefin's developer shell activated. I don't think I need it. That's OK. What I like about Bluefin is that it's ridiculously stable despite having so much new stuff, has a great community, and super open development. And it only updates the base system once a week. I don't want a new image every day. Weekly is just right. I just want to have a place where I can work on multiple ideas and posts, easily going from one to the other and being able to export .md files to the blog's local /content folder when I'm ready to publish. My existing scripts can build and publish from there. I'm kind of looking for a hybrid of a CMS and personal wiki. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I am testing all the notetaking apps in Flathub to see which one(s) allow me to easily create blog posts for the Zola (and Hugo) static site generators. Pro tip: The first time I put the image on the USB drive, I used Nautilus to expand the lzma file and GNOME's Impression to make the USB drive. Didn't work -- the BIOS didn't see it. The second time I used the lzma command line utility (as recommended by the project) to get the img, then I used Fedora Media Writer to create the bootable drive. That worked. With a bit of a faster USB drive, this could absolutely work. https://nomadbsd.org/ npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe This snac2 instance seems to be running much faster today. And even when a company offers what looks like an app for a PC, it's usually a browser app packaged to look like a native app. MS Office and Adobe Suite are dinosaurs. Nobody's planning new, big-$$$ apps for business that need to be installed on specific PC OSes. Even Microsoft and Adobe know the future is in the browser (and in services). We're living in a SAAS world, and that where Linux can excel. It's all in the browser. As a news editor, I use mostly web-based tools. I still run Vim for text editing, and I do use some image editors (mostly gThumb), but I do more and more photo editing with applications that live in the browser. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe @nprofile…zq4g It's GNOME Boxes, which I think is qemu npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I tried to set up a VM today with #Xfce on #NetBSD. Great book. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe My #FreeBSD experiment continues, still in a GNOME Boxes VM. The latest 15.0 install is the "experimental" all packages version. I tried to set up automatic package upgrades with /etc/periodic.conf. This time I did NOT use desktop-installer script, which didn't work that well for me. It does so much, and makes mistakes while doing it, and you kind of lose the plot, so to speak. Instead I used the Handbook to install GNOME and then Xfce. With GDM, I couldn't get to the bottom of the screen to change my session (it's a VM issue), so I eventually replaced GDM with LightDM and added Xfce as well. Now wtih LightDM I can run GNOME or Xfce. I don't remember having this problem with GhostBSD or FreeBSD on bare metal, but there's an issue where when you use the mouse wheel to scroll down in Firefox, it works as normal, but when you try to scroll up with the wheel, it acts like you wanted to hit the back button multiple times. Fortunately there's a fix for this, and I successfully applied it. The solution involves creating ~/.Xmodmap and dropping the right line into it: https://forums.ghostbsd.org/d/441-ghostbsd-in-virtualbox-stop-browser-going-back-in-history-when-scrolling My question is WHY is it like this in the default? I can't imagine anybody wants this. In any case, I have a nice FreeBSD system in the VM, and it's all packages, which is very new to me. That means # pkg upgrade should update the entire system, right? And with periodic.conf I shouldn't even need to do that. It'll be automatic. I have a lot more experience with OpenBSD, and in both of these systems, there is constant innovation, and things are very much better than ever. It's nice to see. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I just did this, but in a GNOME Boxes VM. I wasn't able to see the bottom of the GDM screen to select my session, so I eventually installed lightdm along with Xfce. Now I have both DEs. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe @nprofile…rwlk Doing an all-package install this time npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I haven't done nearly as many FreeBSD installs as OpenBSD. I'd really like to dedicate a computer to FreeBSD. I think native ZFS is important enough to warrant really giving FreeBSD a serious try. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe I did a #FreeBSD install test in a GNOME Boxes VM. There are a lot of choices in that installer. I think I got most of it "right." Next time I need to remember to decline setting NTP at boot. I don't need that much of a delay (and it did warn me). I decided to try the desktop-installer package. It shit the bed on KDE -- it couldn't find the package. Then I tried #Lumina. I got it but didn't look into the DE until after the fact. AFAICT, it's a dead project. It's OK, but I need to do a new install and try some of the other DEs via desktop-installer, which I've never used before. desktop-installer offered to install some apps, and among the ones I went for were LibreOffice. I immediately tried to create a password-protected document, and I was surprised to learn that it works! It didn't crash the app like it did for me months ago on FreeBSD and GhostBSD, which I might want to try again (especially if this LO bug is really fixed). I hope this fix isn't just due to running in a VM vs. bare metal. Unfortunately, I'm a little low on test machines at the moment. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe @nprofile…qdlx I now have a fresh #AlmaLinux VPS ready to go npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe This time I did not use docker compose, but I am aware of it. This is a good tip. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe #Bluefin is still performing well. I've been running it "in production" for the past couple of days. I think I did this install a month or two ago. The CPU issue with the g/Vim Flatpak has been solved, so that's a major win this week. I started working on a Ruby project in a Debian Trixie Distrobox with a custom /home, and it makes me remember how thankful I am for the things that Bluefin delivers in the image: You don't have to choose between Distrobox and Toolbox because Bluefin ships both. The features that Distrobox offers are pretty key for me. Homebrew is a great way to get CLI apps systemwide. I haven't used it yet, but I also haven't ruled it out. I really like having tmux, htop and full console Vim in the default. I could get any of these from Brew, but I'd rather have the Fedora RPMs on the image. Bluefin updates are on a weekly cadence, which really works for me. The system maintains itself. There are a lot of little config choices, just like in every 'opinionated' distro, and it's nice to have so many tweaks in place right out of the box. I'm still having issues with Bazaar not starting at times until I first kill the background process. It's not a deal-breaker, and there is a bug filed upstream. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe @nprofile…rwlk I couldn't stick with the tab groups all in one window. npub1u0jfrghdqpgxh57s4tfltk29qfrdk8v4gcr6x4l2day75e6pszds2zw80r passthejoe @nprofile…lcfa Slackers are always willing to help
