I get all of my local AI news from X.com right now, which makes me kind of angry.
I'm thinking of posting more local AI content here to encourage more of that. I hope that won't bug the anti- AI crowd. But I'm a firm believer in the notion that, just like with software, open-weight AI is the only way forward.

Such a wonderful moment. Thanks T&T for asking me to officiate. It’s was a true honor.

Have you ever started whistling a song without knowing what the song was until you hit the chorus? Well I just did. The brain is a weird and wonderful thing.

I’ve been hearing alarm bells ever since Trump banned Fable two weeks ago. Now the other shoe drops:

Politically safe because the electorate fears AI. Disastrous for the future.

Well this is concerning.
I just suspended 14 Russian LLM generated bot accounts that were created around April 17 on my Mastodon instance, twit.social. Somehow they circumvented manual registration approval. I've turned on Captchas (much as I hate them) for new member requests in the hopes that will stop the bots. They must have discovered a registration bypass bug.
Thanks to IFTAS SW-ISAC for noting and reporting the bots.

It’s so unsettling watching our 250 year-old democracy decay into dictatorship while the most disruptive technology since steam power is evolving at superhuman speed. It’s like watching a locomotive barrel headlong into a tornado. I have a bad feeling about this.

Just a reminder - there have been numerous fraudulent accounts created on the Fediverse lately pretending to be Mastodon Security, and asking for your credentials in DMs to you.
DO NOT RESPOND. DO NOT CLICK.
We will never ask you to verify your credentials. Period.
Tell your friends.

Mike Masnick nails it again in “Fascism for First-Time Founders” on Techdirt:
"Real innovation happens when companies have to compete on merit, not on who can kiss the leader’s ass most effectively. In a functioning democracy with actual rule of law, the best products have the opportunity to win. In an authoritarian system, the company that makes the dictator happy wins—and that’s it."

Serious question here.
Congress doesn’t have the votes to stop this slow-motion coup.
Courts can issue injunctions but who is going to enforce them?
With a corrupt oligarchy that has shown its total disregard for law and the constitution is there anybody who can stop them?

It’s a story as old as time. Well at least as old as HG Wells…
"The lawgiver, of all beings, most owes the law allegiance. He of all men should behave as though the law compelled him. But it is the universal weakness of mankind that what we are given to administer we presently imagine we own.
– H.G. Wells"
Sigh.
