to foster permaculture, we also should make our part to create web sites that does not require ex bloated javascript. As we are covered from the OS perspective (like NetBSD), we should focus on less memory hungry browsers (like elinks). I am quite concerned about the future of Firefox and I wouldn't mind a simple browser.
P.s. I tried Gemini and I liked it, although the server side is quite not stable when I tried it. But imho markdown or simple html over http/1.0 would.do

I wouldn't say I like it, but Schengen can be temporarily suspended with checkpoints from local authorities. This has been enforced during some migration crises.

I've read only today about a woman being kicked off a flight kicked out of a flight because she misgendered a flight attendant a couple of months ago. I won't enter into specifics of the story, nor comment on it as a pilot/captain.
But I will say some words as a human being because it's happened to me so much lately.
Please, do not misgender or deadname someone. Don't make fun of somebody's body or dressing, even if it might seem to you as an innocent joke.
It's humiliating and destabilizing. We are already fighting a big battle inside our brains, more than you can imagine and perhaps more than it appears from the outside. Not everybody is so strong.
Your words or attitude can change our day from a bright one to the day we might do something stupid.
It doesn't take much to be kind. In doubt, it's ok to ask.

I wrote a small script to generate (random) private IPv6 network address.
I'm not sure if it will be useful to anyone. I use it in many places, like generating Wireguard private addresses or in network testing environments.
As I'm slowly migrating to Codeberg, I decided to share this. It should work on FreeBSD, Linux and MacOS.

There is some good news for Podman and FreeBSD lovers.
The patch to make Podman work more smoothly with Ansible has landed tonight as a new package (version: 5.1.1_6)
We (as the community) have prepared some test Ansible playbooks that you can play with.
https://gitlab.com/bergblume/podman-caddy-on-freebsd
sample/easy playbook for deploying Podman on FreeBSD, an example of deploying a pre-made web server container (Caddy), and the Dockerfile/Containerfile to generate such a container.
https://codeberg.org/Honeyguide/micropod-sampler
Will deploy a scaled-down example of a datacenter environment with container orchestration tools using Freebsd container images. It will configure a single server with Podman and then build containers for Consul, Nomad, traefik-consul, Minio, and Nginx.
Track your Podman on FreeBSD issues ... ahem ... experience here:

It's now public, and I can rant about it a bit ☺️
The bug [1] is a null pointer exception because the podman code tried to get resolver information from the Linux namespace to inject DNS into the container. Of course, Linux namespaces are not available on FreeBSD.
But by looking at the sources, you can understand how the code is deeply rooted in Linux. Doug's patch put some abstraction layers to accommodate FreeBSD and other operating systems.
Of course, for those knowing the history of podman, this comes from RedHat. And this means Linux. Kudos to them to have created such an exciting piece of code.
But at the same time, it reminded me of some of my previous toots about the lost mentality about multi-platform development.
But enough about ranting. Even if jails are there and I still prefer to go native, it's good to have a fully integrated OCI container solution. Also, if you run just the hello world container, don't forget to do a "jls" on the host machine and celebrate a bit 😉

On behalf of the @npub1kkf…6dgf and the Enterprise WG, we're pleased to announce the "Podman test project".
From September 2 to October 11, 2024, the FreeBSD Open Container Initiative Runtime Extension Working Group is hosting a time-boxed testing project for its experimental implementation of Podman. If you’re comfortable with experimental software and have experience with Docker or Podman, we want you on board. You only need a machine running FreeBSD 13.2 or later (possibly with the latest) with ZFS storage.
More information on:
https://github.com/oci-playground/freebsd-podman-testing
We want this test to be successful. This is IMHO a significant step toward a wider acceptance of FreeBSD as a viable enterprise platform to a broader audience.
I'm glad to have contributed to this project. I need to thank Alice from the @npub1kkf…6dgf and Doug (@npub1gj7…x760) for having worked on this so much.
Also, the base FreeBSD OCI images are kindly provided by your trusted @npub1ufp…mh33 and @npub18v5…lren 🤗

That part of George Street, the one in the photo, still has its charm in its own way. In a way, the leftmost part of the pedestrian walk of the high street (coming from George Street) still has some "life". That part is where shops have mostly survived.
A lot of shops in the area have closed. Witgift is a ghost shopping centre. Even Sainsbury has closed, leaving us residents of that area with only local grocery shopping (Sainsbury's local, tesco, coop, ...) except LIDL on the far end of the high street. I survived lately by home deliveries.
Many new condos have been built (I was in one of them), and many more are under construction.
Unbeatable location for transport: 15 mins to London Bridge or Victoria, and even less from Gatwick.
But I feel that the area is becoming more and more like the Docklands (or similar areas) with lots of residential buildings without anything, IMHO losing the initial charm of a town or borough. And I found it quite depressing.
It is very far away from the experience of my previous places, where (although in Zone 2 of South London) they still retain a high street with many choices.

I am the worst when it comes to domain name registers. Mostly because ... yeah, you all know by now ... I'm lazy.
I've been using EuroDNS (https://www.eurodns.com/) for ages, mostly because it was one of the first EU to offer domains without anything more.
I have to say, my laziness comes with limitations, mostly due to a lack of APIs. I miss the backend support by Let's Encrypt and other ACME DNS verifications, which is extremely useful for systems with limited reachability.
I am tempted to use Hetzner because of the APIs. I believe @npub18v5…lren made some tests, perhaps she can share her experiences.
I also remember that @npub1m7m…2e7k ran some comparisons between EU DNS hosters, maybe he can recall us the link with the comparison table.
P.S. Laziness and slowness will kill me sooner or later 😄

I need to make an amend to my blog post "Easy way to backup up git a repository (in a pipeline)"
https://www.tara.sh/posts/2024/2024-06-17-git_backup/
The script's first version was taken from my customer’s pipeline, and it was working fine there. However, I made the mistake of not testing it as a standalone script in a separate pipeline. I'm sorry about it. It wasn’t exactly working as intended, so I modified it and tested it accordingly.
This script contains fixes/contributions by @npub1qpk…x0xk and @npub18v5…lren

I experimented with the Gemini protocol as an alternative to the bloated web. I liked it, but somehow, I wasn't attracted to it, not even to my own projects.
I'm now thinking, for my own stuff, to use just Markdown over HTTP(S) and a simple browser like this:

Well, that's deserved. In my mind, you and @npub1ef5…gcpc are the pillars of BSD Cafe.
I should have mentioned everyone, but I'm not good at names, and my mind went blank.
FYI, the interview wasn't prepared at all. Nothing was agreed upon in advance except for 5 minutes before speaking about the potential topics, and all was improvised.

There's something I said off the air during my live stream on YouTube.
Dear content creators, I understand YouTube attracts audience. And the same thing apply to publishing books on Amazon (including ebooks).
Especially when it comes to e-books, I'd like to own the e-book and not relying on Amazon to provide me content that can be revoked any time.
And you (authors) are in the hands of these corporations, that can chop your profits or worse at their will.
But can you please think about an alternative way to publish your content?
Like selling the epub/pdf file through BookFunnel or publishing videos on PeerTube.
I'm not saying you shouldn't use YT or KDP, but just have an additional option.

Tomorrow, Wed 19th at 10am PT, I will be interviewed by the @npub1kkf…6dgf as part of the celebrations for the FreeBSD Day.
https://freebsdfoundation.org/freebsd-day/
I'm very excited. But I am also aware that there are people with more experience on FreeBSD. Although 30+ years in the industry and in OpenSource , I just recently joined the BSD family and I am aware of my limits.
I hope that I'll be able to spread the awareness of the values of FreeBSD and bring it to large enterprises as I did with Linux.
I want to thank the bsd.cafe family and a special friend who introduced me to FreeBSD.
