Absolutely. The only uses that I see of public notes are:
1. either as a reference to give to someone who is having trouble refreshing his wallet (and doesn't yet see the transaction you sent to him), or
2. as a temporary measure until the initial block download is completed on your node.

That was true a few decades ago.
Now the governments are headed for bankruptcy and are all technically bankrupt already. So whether you go bankrupt for 10 trillions or for 100 trillions, or 100 quadrillions, at this point, "what difference does it make".
I do not see any way that this can be turned around.
Which is why I bitcoin, and teach bitcoin.

I've have had those exact thoughts/questions.
Until recent events, I never owned Monero. But I was always, always, careful to tell people that Monero was the only altcoin which I did not consider to be a shitcoin. I always felt that the Monero community has the heart in the right place because they are willing to defend privacy, even at the cost of hard forks.
As for spamchain BTC, I'm only divesting and unfortunately cannot see it as a store of value anymore. I do not know why anybody would buy it at this point. I'm trying to divest as fast as I can. Since about a month ago, I do not *personally* know a single person who is selling fiat to buy spamchain. I do know of people buying bitcoin on blake2b and monero and I do know people desperately trying to sell spamchain.
I believe we may be able to have a transparent ledger with decentralized mining. We might even be able to get away with having a blinded ledger with centralized mining, if it ever came to that. But what we cannot get away with is a transparent ledger with centralized mining, which is what spamchain has become.
To answer your question more specifically about Monero versus bitcoin on blake2b, these are my opinions and my current understanding :
- Monero doesn't have the flexibility of script that Bitcoin has to facilitate second layers like lightning. We've known since the Satoshi days that you cannot scale a blockchain to the whole world. You need second layers for scale.
- Personally, this is the image that I have : Monero is the pragmatic, jaded crypto anarchist who sees all the shit in the world and says "See, I told you so." I respect that guy. The Bitcoin (xbt) guy is the guy who wants to make the world a better place, maybe naively, and who has hope for a better future for humanity. It may be a bias on my part, but I feel like there are more Christians in the XBT community and more atheists/agnostics in the Monero community. I'm personally agnostic (meaning that I "just don't know") but the vast, vast, majority of my friends are very religious. I understand both viewpoints, and I feel like maybe both are even necessary.
- I have a family. The Bitcoin supply is trivially auditable so I can sleep better and worry less about my family's financial future. Auditing the total supply of Monero requires further cryptographic assumptions. We've seen, many times, how badly implemented cryptography can lead to inflation bugs (zcash, liquid, etc). Luckily the Monero community seems to have extremely talented and conservative developers. But an inflation bug can literally mean the end of the coin. That is not a risk I'm willing to take with my whole net worth. With a part of my net worth? Yes. With my whole net worth? No. Furthermore, since the ledger is blinded, a catastrophic inflation bug would be that much harder to roll back.
- There is also the question of tail emission. The supply of Bitcoin is capped. The supply of Monero is not. It is true that the extra supply of Monero will diminish in relative importance over the years. But it is not capped. There are pros and cons to this approach. I'm not convinced that it's a bad approach, but it's a different approach and it's not my preference.
Overall, I would say that Bitcoin is the hope for the future of humanity and that Monero is the life raft for the scenario where that Bitcoin hope turns out to be misplaced.
There's also a part of me that sees Monero as a private second layer for Bitcoin.
In conclusion, I'm glad that both exist.

I read this post and I mostly see : price, politics, ETFs.
That's not what happened recently. None of that matters.
Mt. Gox didn't faze me. None of the later forks fazed me. The 2020 March crash didn't faze me. The 2022+ bear market didn't faze me.
What matters is this : Version 30 of Core, then BIP-110 and how it was received and treated on sha256 coin.
The quiet room you're reading is because the heart is gone on the sha256 chain.
But there's hope and excitement on the blake2b chain.

I remember Francis Pouliot (or the bullbitcoin account) said on twatter that no one would get stuck in liquid. I remember he said he guaranteed it.
Using snaplytics.io, I can't seem to find the tweet anymore. Anybody remember the date?
I guess it wasn't a guarantee guarantee. More like a "well, you know, like, if everything goes well then.. it should probably be fine, like".
I remember reading the tweet and thinking... ooooofff... "*guarantee*, that's a big word to use there big boy."
Narrator : there was no guarantee.
@BULLBITCOIN_
We know many of you are eager to know what will happen to Lightning payments in the BULL wallet, and when you will be able to convert L-BTC to BTC.
The reality is that the Liquid network's situation is completely outside of BULL’s control: we have to wait for the Federation to resume pegouts.
Any service that accepts L-BTC to send out BTC will soon accumulate L-BTC in its inventory, while its BTC inventory is depleted. Under normal circumstances, swap services that accumulate L-BTC use the pegout mechanism to rebalance their inventory. Absent this mechanism, our view is that a swap provider or exchange cannot operate sustainably.
BULL could re-enable inbound Lightning payments, allowing users to start accumulating L-BTC again, which would provide liquidity for those who want to exit L-BTC.
We have decided not to follow this approach for now and will wait for pegouts to resume, because that approach would rely on some users taking the risk of holding L-BTC without compensation or a guarantee that they can exit back to BTC.
For the pegout mechanism to be reactivated in Liquid, two conditions must be met.
First, the software needs to be secure to avoid another exploit that could drain the federation’s remaining ~3,600 BTC. That part is within the control of the federation members and their IT provider, Blockstream. The known vulnerabilities, as far as we know, have been fixed. What is harder is finding any currently unknown vulnerabilities, but this should not prevent the Liquid network from moving forward.
The second and most serious problem is that the total amount of BTC held by the federation must be equal to the total amount of L-BTC in circulation. In other words, the backing of L-BTC by BTC must return to a 1:1 ratio. We are aware of ongoing efforts to 'fill the gap' and at this stage, all we can do is wait for that to happen. Once that is done, BULL will be able to offer a conversion service that allows users to exchange their L-BTC for BTC at a 1:1 exchange rate.
Based on the information we have, our expectation is that Liquid swap and exchange services allowing users to convert their L-BTC to BTC could resume within 30 days. This is an educated guess, not a guarantee.
Looking beyond the current situation, we are also evaluating the best path forward for Lightning payments in the BULL wallet. As part of BULL’s ongoing R&D efforts, our CEO, @francispouliot_ is preparing a presentation examining the tradeoffs of the main alternative payment protocols available to Bitcoin wallets.
The goal is to identify the most robust and sustainable architecture for providing BULL users with the best possible experience going forward.
We would like to thank all our users for their continued patience and understanding. We will share further updates as reliable information becomes available.

I've used lightning for lots of things but my experience has been that to work, it had to be used either from a custodial app (ecash mints) or a wallet that used liquid on the backend. I can't count the number of failed routes I ran into with self-sovereign options (my own node).
Would you mind saying which lightning application you like/recommend for these buys?

I think we have a shot. I like the precedent we're setting : if the miners misbehave, they're out. We get better miners going forward. And I love Roughnecks' idea of putting the mining algo in the name, Bitcoin-Blake2b. It makes it clear to future potential misbehaving miners as well : FAFO.
I like the people that I see on the bip110 side. I think it has a shot. I see many principled people on that side. And all the ones I had come to distrust over the years are all staying on the other chain. I feel excited about that. It feels like a complete purge of all the shit that had been building for years.
But I'm now also very interested in Monero. It just works, privately and without all the lightning tradeoffs.

Roughneck Chronicles 4: Antifragility Test
Roughnecks @Roughnecks110
“What are you looking so miserable about? There's a whole ocean of oil under our feet.” -Daniel Plainview
The trauma of the block size wars of 2017 is being relived by Bitcoin plebs and core sycophants. Fear, sorrow, and confusion reign, even amongst us Roughnecks, and we’ve seen some shit! But this is the best outcome for Bitcoin. If the miners had followed the plebs, as they did in 2017, and smoothly activated a soft fork, there would still be the narrative hanging over Bitcoin that miners decide protocol rules. This narrative would be used to gaslight Bitcoiners into going along with whatever 5 or 6 mining pools decide in the future. This is an antifragility test that needed to happen. Better that it happens now instead of 15 years from now when the plebs would be less equipped to mount any meaningful resistance. This is a victory for Bitcoin and it sets the precedent for Bitcoin’s survival into the distant future long after our tongues are silenced.
Our garden weeds itself. The shitcoiner/big blocker mining pools. . . gone! The bithereum bros hell bent on turning Bitcoin into another Ethereum clone. . . gone! The NFT idiots and token scammers. . . gone! The suitcoiners who think nodes and self-custody are curse words. . . gone!
What comes next is a proof-of-work change, Bitcoin’s first. There is some hesitation amongst Bitcoiners that a POW change creates an altcoin. We disagree. A POW change is an inevitable part of Bitcoin’s maturity and a necessary tool to keep mining honest and decentralized. Whatever you think of BIP110, you can’t claim mining is decentralized. So how do you do it without creating an altcoin? We have a proposal that sets a positive precedent for POW changes.
The Bitcoin brand must not be surrendered. We can hear your objections already being shouted at the screen, “Bitcoin is captured, we need a clean break from Bitcoin!” or “You’re just gonna replay the bcash drama!”
Both objections are wrong as we will explain. Bitcoin is not a company. It is money. Money cannot rebrand itself every couple of decades. If the Bitcoin name fails or is abandoned, no one will trust its replacement. Money needs to be timeless. Money needs to be trusted to hold your life savings and be passed down to heirs without worry. If the Bitcoin name is held exclusively by bad actors, then fiat will have won. There will never be a Bitcoin standard if Bitcoin is renamed every time there is a POW change.
The next objection is a Block Size War flashback. No one wants to argue over what the real Bitcoin is. Good news, you won’t have to. Here’s our naming convention that can apply in 2026, in 2046, 2066, and whenever the future POW changes happen. The new POW algo gets attached to the coin’s name. We don’t know yet what Bitcoin’s new mining algo will be so we will use the example of a fictional algo SHA357. The coin will be called Bitcoin-SHA357 so there is no confusion with the core chain or Bitcoin-SHA256. This naming convention will be used only around the time of a POW change. Eventually, as the new algo outpaces adoption of the previous algo, the algo suffix gets naturally dropped and people just start referring to it as Bitcoin again. It’s still Bitcoin. It just had an upgrade to its algo, that’s all. This is intuitive as users expect periodic upgrades to software. Bitcoin is not immune from this need for periodic upgrades.
If misbehaving miners are unceremoniously forked off with a new algo, they are less likely to misbehave in the future. Or they’ll misbehave less frequently.
Note that Bitcoin Cash did NOT have a POW change. Some of the same mining pools that are currently mining on the invalid Core chain also mine bcash to this day. They are not Bitcoiners. They are big blockers who have once again forked off to a new chain. They didn’t decide what Bitcoin was in 2017 and aren’t deciding it in 2026 either.
Bitcoin survives this antifragility test.

- lightning through liquid : permissioned and stopped working when boltz stopped.

I hear this "dice are imperfect" thing, and I think to myself, "ok, by how much? and that leaves me how much entropy at the end of the day?". And it's way more than enough.
Now compare that to the catastrophic risks of a bad RNG or bad implementation around it.
Plus, why have just one set of 24 words? Who can't spare a couple of hours to roll a bunch of them? So that when the "imperfect dice" fail you, you're still orders of magnitude better off than with the badly implemented RNG.
If people tell me they can't spare a few hours to roll dice, they better also tell me they never watch netflix or sports.

? So... trust me bro, "dice rolls are imperfect" ?
Rolling good dice is the best option we have. Remember the debian ssh bug? And the random number generator problem in Tails? And now coldcard? For kicks, just ask Kimi K2.6 to list bugs related to RNG that have happened in Tails and in the linux kernel.
A printed bip-39 wordlist. Rolling casino dice, odd number = 1, even number = 0 ; get 256 bits like that. Seems pretty good. Last word calculated on a seedsigner, a jade or an offline live-dvd computer.
There's also the pairing method : rolling twice the same die, discard the result if the two numbers are the same, if the first roll is higher than the second, that's a 1; if the first time is lower than the second time, that's a 0. That seems really good too.

Yes, that's what it takes. But you can calculate the words yourself on paper and use a seedsigner or Jade Plus for the last word (of your 24 word mnemonic). https://github.com/veebch/Bip39-Dice/blob/master/BIP39DiceManualCalculator.pdf
That's why I never got involved in consulting services that were being offered online. The ones I saw basically just advised trusting the devices.
It takes more time (than profitable) to help people do it right. So I volunteer my time and only help my friends.

That's not what the letter says : "Nothing in the public record supports any of that, and we would oppose anyone who claims it. "
I don't know all that is in the public record. And I won't say now that I'll oppose unknown claims made by others. It's for the person making claims to prove them.
We can focus on this : whether it was 1. malice or 2. simply hubris + extreme arrogance + utter carelessness, either way, he shouldn't be overseeing the budget of a NPO. And he should be transparent.

Why put this part??? :
"We make no allegation of fraud, theft, deliberate backdooring, or prior knowledge of the defect. Nothing in the public record supports any of that, and we would oppose anyone who claims it. "
Your ask in that letter is basically for him to step down, retire and be transparent. Ok, fine. But then why assert these other things that you don't know?
I don't know if there was theft, backdooring or prior knowledge. That's not for me to decide and especially not at this stage. It will all be evaluated in court, no doubt.
But FOR SURE, I would never "OPPOSE" such claims!!! WTF is that???

The 2000 miniseries was not as good on the acting and the visuals, but it tracked the book much better. I prefer the 2000 miniseries.
Nothing beats the book though. The audiobook is also pretty good.

I mostly agree. But there is an agenda to use printed money to buy up the real estate so we can rent from the Parasites and be happy about it.
Also, the money being broken and risky, there is nowhere to park the money (except for bitcoin, pre-v30). So land and real estate become bank accounts.
So it's not only inflation. It seems to me to be : broken money + inflation (related to broken money) + 2030 agenda.

I'd say yes and no. If bitcoin stops being a real store of value, then we have to reconsider things.
The reason for having a transparent blockchain is to avoid inflation bugs which could crop up with a more private, encrypted, blockchain.
However, if one doesn't care about the store of value aspect, then it means that it is mostly just a medium of exchange.
For a simple medium of exchange, the risk of an inflation bug on a private blockchain is much less concerning. Also, a private blockchain might actually make more sense for a medium of exchange.

You're a smart man and a brilliant developer. So far your take on Bip-110 has been that you don't know the consequences, so you won't say either way.
I wasn't hoping that you would know. No one can fully predict the future.
But if you can't, based on your knowledge and intelligence, take a position on what you think would be better ideally, on something as important as the direction of the most important project for humanity at this time, I fail to understand why anybody would care to read your opinions.

If BIP110 wins, I'll be more bullish than ever on bitcoin.
If BIP110 fails, I hope we have a chain split and that this crowd sticks with it. I'd be bullish that chain.
If a chain split makes a hard fork necessary on the bip110 (to change the mining algo or difficulty change), I'm okay with that too.
If BIP110 fails and we also don't get a bip110 coin, bitcoin will be dead to me and I'll DCA out of it over time, hoping that ETFs pump my bags while I check out.
At that point, bitcoin would just be another shitcoin (controlled by about 5 mining pool CEOs and about 10 vaxxed woke childless devs). So shitcoin for shitcoin, I'll look around for the most degenerate option which would be likely to pump in the short term. Any profits would go into buying life chips with it all : land, house, car, 3D printers, CNC routers, books, GPUs, life experiences for the family, etc.

Your point about the immune system turning on itself is well taken.
In this case, I think Bitcoin is at an inflection point. If BIP110 can't go through, it's time for the two crowds to go their respective ways.
Jon Attack said on a interview that about 80 to 85% of the core devs are vaxxed (covid). And I see that there are many childless, woke people in core and among their supporters. This is making me very uncomfortable. The belief systems under which they operate are completely opposed to mine and to the belief system of many that I respect. I'm no longer comfortable having over 100% of my family's financial future in the hands of those devs.
If BIP110 goes through, I'll be super bullish on bitcoin again.
If we get a chain split, I'll be happy to go on my merry way with the BIP110 crowd, with the plebs. And whatever happens, happens.
At this point, I believe the time for technical debates is over. It's been the same arguments for months. The BIP110 crowd won't convince core and core won't convince the BIP110 crowd.
I still do see the value of each camp putting their ideas forward so that we can all reach as many of our respective people as possible. And anyway I believe in freedom of speech.
On a personal basis : the covid-era craziness has pushed my family to make changes that enabled us to meet many new like-minded people.
We've cut just about every link we had with the people we knew who had different basic values. This is what made room for so many new good friends.
It's much less stressful to simply be amongst your people. It's a good life. I hope we can have that in Bitcoin as well.
