I actually don't know about facebook personally, it is possible they've got exclusively external vendors doing all the logistics, security, part swapping, etc on site, that's possible, but that still means there are 500-1500+ people working onsite every day and that's not going to change.
I don't think the AWS picture is correct though, I know many people who have joined from Amazon, and I know their datacenters are quite busy.

not to mention, if you're outsourcing everything you aren't using less people, you're using MORE people, because not only do you still have people constantly diagnosing machines and swapping parts at e.g Dell, you now also have a much larger load on logistics. both locally and externally.

If you have dozens to hundreds of thousands of servers, this easily translates to hundreds to thousands of broken machines a day.
even when you have systems that automatically order a new HDD or stick of RAM when it starts having issues, you still end up dozens of cases that don't make sense.
The majority of my day is literally just figuring out why e.g DIMM13 is still missing, or some softw crash despite the ECC RAM not indicating any issues.

as someone working at a datacenter I can confidently say this is false.
30 people covers maybe a small colocation site, but an actual datacenter has hundreds if not thousands of people working there.
you need electricians, plumbing and mechanical engineers, people diagnosing broken servers, network equipment, building out new equipment, swapping parts, logistics, security, kitchen personnel, cleaning, managers, etc etc. It doesn't run itself.

honestly this is rather worrying and I'd not trust any chinese cheap silver jewelry for now.
it's hard to verify without sending a piece to a lab for verification which costs up to a few hundred and destroys the object, there are no good home testing kits, the ones that exist have a high false negative rate.
it would make sense as an extremely common scam; Cadmium is the same kind of white-silvery as silver, but is a cheap side product of mining, and melts at just 321C vs silver's 961C.

I came across an article that more or less said 'get higher Cat ethernet cables for more speed!'
But the reality is more nuanced.
1) Cat is just a rating for 'capable of xxx mhz'. It doesn't say anything about the material. Copper > CCA.
2) Many 'Gamer Cat7+' cables are not certified; essentially fake.
3) A *good* Cat5e cable is capable of 1gbit at 100(!) meters and maybe 10gbit often up to 30-40 meters.
4) Consider EMI; Don't ziptie your Ethernet to your Power cabling, that'll always suck.

it seems the aurora has subsided already, I haven't seen much of it in the last hour, I do still see a faint shimmer on the horizon but nothing like the clear moving sheen across the sky that I could readily see with my unadjusted eyes and capture with simple photos
It's interesting to see, that must've been really fast moving particles from the solar storm, usually it takes longer for these to arrive, I'm guessing we'll see more intense auroras in the next few hours/days, keep an eye out!

honestly the best countermeasure the EU could take right now without any losses or monetary requirements, is to remove all the USA-mandated anti circumvention laws, and severely reduce the legal power USA companies have here, as @npub1fdr…lvhs suggested.

TIL: In Deep Rock Galactic, if you use the zipline trick to get EVERYONE out of the extraction droppod after it starts leaving, the mission actually half-fails, with everyone striking victory poses in the end screen, while the lights are red (indicating failure), getting a bunch of the loot and XP, but not all of the gold, and the actual mission counting as failed so you'd have to redo it if it's part of some assignment

I really appreciate how well KDE Plasma does as tiling window manager when you get the hang of how it does it.
I feel like almost nobody knows this is even an option, so:
- press SUPER (win key) + T
- you'll see the panes that you can divvy your screen up into. make panels as you please.
- grab a window by pressing super + mouse key (you can press anywhere on the window for this, not just the titlebar)
- hold SHIFT to see the panels you defined before (with super+T)

I had an amaryllis sitting in a bag unused because I wanted to plant it and didn't get to it because of being sick, but that didn't deter the plant from deciding to grow on its side in the hallway, so I put it with its bag on top of a pot in the window sill to let it grow, and it seems to be doing well so far!
outside I noticed one of my pots didn't survive the recent streak of icy weather, guess I'll have to find a new one for the inhabitants somewhere this summer

I would echo this sentiment, for most things it is objectively better than Windows these days.
but as much as I hate to admit it, having e.g the right creative tools available is important too, and if you want truly everyone to switch, it does mean that some people have to sacrifice some comfort, tools, and even hardware
That said, I definitely think it's worth it to still do it, because in the end, if everyone switches we'll get an open ecosystem that'll bring that all back and more

pro tip: a Homelab and Selfhosted infra are two different things.
If you use your #homelab for #selfhosting your personal stuff, one of two things happens:
- you can no longer use your homelab as homelab and for experimentation
- your selfhosted infra is constantly offfline
Selfhosted infra should be seen as a PRODUCTION environment, which homelabs are not.

I also want to address the Renewables elephant
I’m a huge believer in solar/wind. It’s exciting how fast they’re growing. My home batteries + panels almost get me off-grid... in the summer. But not winter.
This is where Nuclear makes sense.
While solar suits homes, heavy industry less so, and e.g steel/cement needs massive constant power AND high heat.
Nuclear generates that heat directly, cleanly bridging the gap and handling the heavy lifting so renewables can handle the rest

Some nuance to add:
- Gen 4 reactors massively reduce old nuclear waste volume & life; By recycling spent fuel, we can extract the remaining energy and 'burn' the long-lived elements. This shrinks the waste pile and drops storage time from 100,000 years to ~300
- That said, reprocessing is complex/costly, but it unlocks massive energy reserves we've already mined, reducing the need for new mining
- Unregulated coal ash actually releases radioactive material which nuclear plants do not.

Dear #Linux power users:
I know it feels weird, but I do recommend using desktop apps like Discover to update your desktop system rather than running apt/dnf/etc manually
Why?
- Discover etc actually update your Flatpaks and Snaps too, apt/dnf/etc don't do this, and this actually seems like a widespread issue somehow
- using apt/dnf/etc directly (usually) directly overwrites system files, which can cause e.g KDE and other C++ applications to become unstable. Only do this right before a reboot

but that all said; I understand people have preferences, and if their preferences is less bells and whistles, so be it, that's a valid choice.
I just wish Gnome would 1) not be used as default in many distros and workplaces that implement it (gLinux at Google is a pain in the ass sometimes), and 2) would literally allow for any configuration at all without having to install a billion plugins that then break stuff and they then snobbishly suggest you to just turn off the plugins.

there's actually no menu bar in KDE. There's just panels and widgets. You can make it the way you want
And that's kind of one big reason why I personally like KDE; sure it has bells and whistles, but you can literally turn it into Gnome if you prefer, hell you can even turn it into a smartphone-centered touch DE.
I dislike Gnome because they purposely REMOVE options for no other reason than being opinionated. It would not hurt their goals any tiny bit if they just allowed more toggles 🤷

my problem with gnome is that they have about as much choice as apple when it comes to anything, it sometimes feels like they aspire to be ios or whatever, they even removed desktop icons and refuse to have a toggle for it, you have to install a plugin.
which some people may like, and some people will not. If they allowed people to choose, I'm sure there would be less salty responses, but alas, they like salt it seems.

I really appreciate how repairable the 90s miele 'novo stellae' washing machine I have, the frontside is LITERALLY a door, with hinges and all, you just remove 6 screws and it kinda click/slides open (does need some force)
now to replace the shocks, which are so worn they're not giving any resistance. they're probably still the 30 year old original ones from the 90s

the best thing about hosting your own server, is watching other social media platforms (and also fedi servers) catch on fire and explode over silly avoidable drama, while you don't even have to try to keep whatever you don't like out of your domain.
#Selfhosting is super easy. In fact I'd say the hardest part is to *not* touch it. You should put it somewhere on some device you can also avoid touching. Only do updates (and preferably automate those), then your server is basically indestructible.

I went to get some groceries at the farmer's market, turns out today is "pluck your own fruits day", so I'm in the orchard getting some extremely fresh, super ripe, (stewing and normal) pears and apples :drgn_sparkle:

I honestly don't disagree with your argument, somewhere it feels weird to try to make social media, which is inherently somewhat public, private.
But I also think the brilliant thing here is that it doesn't have to be complicated, neither for the user nor codebase:
- Fedi already uses per user keys, just not for encryption
- you could make the entire thing optional with some checkboxes in your settings somewhere.
If anything I somewhat suspect DDoS/performance is the main issue there 🤔

I think DMs as is are also fine, they could just be improved; they're already just as secure and private as messages on Discord, Telegram (unless you use their e2ee mproto thing which literally nobody does), Slack, Teams, etc etc.
Most things don't have end to end encryption. You are still using HTTPS encryption towards and from the server. The main issue is if you e.g accidentally mention someone you didn't want to mention, because they get pulled into the conversation hah

that's a fair criticism honestly, I hadn't seen anyone saying that so far.
And aside from the performance objections, I think mastodon/fedi is a bit weird in that sense. If you e.g make a followers-only account and only ever post followers-only interactions, you can technically make a little "private circle", social media style group chats, which COULD be secure, if MLS was there. So I do understand the appeal, also beyond DMs, which I also believe don't need a protocol if MLS works well

I see some understandable concerns with the potential implementation of MLS (Messaging Layer Security) in the fediverse, because it would make moderation harder.
The thing is, while it's an understandable concern, if you simply replace the word "moderation" with "law enforcement" you'll understand why Chat Control exists.
And while I totally get where both come from, if you want security and privacy to work, I simply think there ought to be a limit to it. Otherwise you simply cannot have them.

i appreciate that. I understand honestly, I am also super aggravated with the state of things in private messaging land.
and there are a lot of people who also just argue that nobody can do anything about this, which I also disagree with, certainly companies like Discord can do far more than this..
..but i also wish they didn't have to, to begin with. privacy should be a human right, but it doesn't feel like it these days.

People are being way too smug and superior about Signal which
1) is a free third party service that somehow gives you all this without expecting anything in return
2) is 'opensource' but you won't find it on places like fdroid because they don't like it if you compile their client yourself
3) doesn't believe in warrant canaries, despite everyone who did deploy them so far has ended up using them, because law enforcement will *always* find your doorstep if the IP of a suspect connected to you.

as far as I can tell I agree with you on everything you hate about it, I just don't think it's as simple as implementing e2ee. I too wish "Privacy" was a protected term. But it isn't.
Discord sucks, Telegram sucks, frankly all free third party services you don't pay for are sus as fuck. Signal says they don't 'need a warrant canary' either. People should selfhost 🤷

I get you are upset at Discord. You can get angry at them for not having more of a spine in this.
But IMHO people should also be upset at the way this just happens in general, at Telegram, at literally every chat service that doesn't have e2ee, and even some that do, and at every mastodon server that will ever get a police warrant because they're not encrypted either.
it's just a mess that I wish didn't exist. I very much share your frustration there.

Not what I said. I said I hope everyone implements e2ee, but the problem goes beyond that. I also said I don't blame anyone for being upset at Discord, I hope it drives them to give more pushback next time.
But Discord is not unique in this unfortunately. And companies that have tried to stand up against it, and had 'warrant canaries' showed multiple times they too get targeted, and sued into silence.
I feel and share your frustration. I wish it was as simple as just adding encryption.

building an end to end encryption platform isn't as simple as just flicking an enable switch unfortunately. As much as I deeply wish everyone was doing it, places like WhatsApp prove purely 'e2e encryption' doesn't fix the problem either.
Like I don't really blame anyone for being upset at Discord for complying, I hope they'll put up more resistance next time. But simply implementing more encryption does not make you safe, as much as I wish it did; they'll just demand backdoors and such

like, the only truly private platforms, are the ones that enforce privacy through security mechanisms, such as end to end encryption, peer to peer communication, federation, etc. And even that is not enough because e.g WhatsApp technically have that but also steal all your metadata and decrypt some of your messages anyway.

everything that doesn't have marketing that's somewhere between bluffing and outright lying is 'too complex'.
Which, to be fair, makes sense. People don't have time and energy to learn the stupid games being played with people's human rights.

TIL: #KDE Plasma has built-in 'static' tiling window manager.
In addition to of course having the four corner window tiling since forever, Plasma 6 allows you to set manual tiles where applications will snap into (with optional padding).
To bring up the tile edit interface, press Super (windows key) + T
After you set up things to your liking, hold [SHIFT] while dragging a window, it'll show a shadow for the tile it'll snap into.
You can use this even while also keeping the other modes active

Alright let's see. The inverter I got is a different seemingly better model so I'm gonna swap it with my current main one and use that one as backup ..
unfortunately it seems the battery and other connectors are completely different, with this one just using wire clamps, and a smaller M6 nut for the battery terminals.
This means I need to get or make a new battery cable.
Meanwhile the sun has been shining on the panels since 9am already apparently :blobcatgooglyholdingitsheadinitshands:

I ordered 6 more solar panels while they're still cheap right now; whole set including 100€ shipping is still under 500€ total, which will end when Chinese tariffs hit. My current 1.8kw only covers like 70% of my 24h usage, I'm hoping to get to a point where I have a surplus to play with.
Not sure where to put all of it yet tho, my carport can take 2 more but the other 4 might have to go upright against the fence or something, to catch low angle light esp during the winters? But we'll see ig ✨

Watt-hours is just practical when you want to visualize how long an electrical device would run on a certain amount of energy, even if that of course is very different energy than burning fuel/food. The fact it's almost the same as calories makes it easy to draw analogies✨

look, I understand one would be hesitant in today's world to accept something like vaccinations, if you look at it from a distance being injected with complex things seems like a bad idea.
But the numbers are real, it really is much better than getting sick. If you disagree with this notion, the only true way is to do true science yourself and go into it unbiased, expect nothing and do fair in-vitro testing. So far nobody has managed to prove it wrong.
