For all the reading they claim to support, they sure can't read the room.

It's been a minute, but the new book report is up!

"Mewling" is indeed a huge red flag. It's a ways down but I also reviewed Bride. Twas bad.

There are a number of single-player games out there specifically about writing letters. I got into the genre with the game Quill https://trollish-delver-games.itch.io/quill-a-letter-writing , but Storybrewers have really taken to the concept with their lineup: Good Society (the Jane Austen TTRPG) has an Epistolary phase where players write letters in character to one another, and the upcoming My Later Father's Correspondence is a solo letter-writing campaign. https://storybrewersroleplaying.com/

I (and a friend) write salty book reviews at my site (not all reports are salty fwiw). For my part, I try to find the humor, or post facto workshop the bad stuff, but I would never just put a living author's work on blast here. One of the reasons I joined Masto is the lower drama and overall shittyness.

Pizoxuat decides to kick it old school and read a romance novel from the bad old days that still managed to horrify her!
https://hagstation.com/hagreads/books/McNaught_Judith__Whitney_My_Love.php
I'm also amused that someone writing a Regency-era novel had the parents of their incorrigible tomboy girl who will certainly cause a scandal if left unchecked decide that "France will straighten her out." ...Had she never read even *one* 19th century British novel?

...it's been a while! I continue my ill-considered re-read of the 90's #Ravenloft novels with the 4th entry: a rambling werewolf story about bards and incest that might have at least closed with some sort of coherent unifying theme had the requirements of the setting not tied the author's hands.
...Or maybe it's just a bad book! You decide!

People are posting other options for jailbreaking your kindle library in my replies, have dig and see if any of those might work?

then I definitely recommend the Boox Note. The battery life for the color version isn't as good, I just have the b+w version (series 3, I believe series 4 is out or soon to be out) which has good battery life, and suits my needs to a T.

I really enjoy my Boox Note 3, but it's not *just* an eReader, it's also my notepad. If you just need an eReader you could probably stick to your Kobo and be fine. (I use the Kobo store because with Calibre it's trivial to move my purchases to the Boox).

I was never really in the amazon eBook ecosystem, but my husband was. A year ago for Christmas I replaced his dying PaperWhite with a Clara BW. He reports it's a superior eReader, and it took me about a half hour to convert his kindle purchases to be readable on the Kobo, using the instructions here:
https://www.cloudwards.net/remove-drm-from-kindle-books/
And with the deASCM plugin, getting my purchased Kobo books onto my 3rd party eReader is pretty easy.

If any of you are in the Amazon ebook ecosystem and have been considering leaving, Amazon has announced that they will be disabling their Transfer to USB functionality next week, so you have 1 week to liberate your library before then! You don't need to rush out and buy a new eReader this week, but you will want to get your purchases migrated to ePUB before you lose that ability altogether. 🧵 for how-to...

I don't do a lot of #kickstarter as a rule, but this wek I will be backing two of them and I just wanted to share, in case anyone else might be interested. Today's backing:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/storybrewers/my-late-fathers-correspondence-an-epistolary-rpg
This is from the people who made Good Society, the Jane Austen RPG and is another #Regency game. Similar to Quill, it is a solo (w/ 2p option) TTRPG letter-writing campaign in which you are a daughter dealing with the loss of her father and the closing of his affairs.

10 years ago, Margaret Atwood wrote _The Heart Goes Last_.
The two main characters are working poor homeless, living in their car. Most people are, in fact. They used to have homes & good ,working-class jobs. They are made an offer for stability... at a price.
There's a definite "no one knows where the money went" foundation. (See Alt Text for quote)
I have a feeling we're about to find out, & we'll KNOW where the money went. Will we stop it? #elon #trump #uspol #capitalism @npub1ny7…uv57

So with much love and respect to the late Sir Terry... the problem I had with Good Omens at the time (not even including more recent developments about one of its authors) is that I have traditionally found that neither one of them were particularly good at writing satisfying endings to stories, and Good Omens suffers the same problem. My advice: Enjoy the journey, don't stake it all on the destination.

It's been a while! With the holidays and various projects I've been lax on posting my reviews.
https://hagstation.com/hagreads/books/Turgenev_Ivan__Fathers_and_Sons.php
This novel is an true favorite of mine. I had the idea to re-read it simply because I read it in college when I was a young liberal, but am now more of a middle-aged radical. How would it hold up?
Bazarov is a polarizing character, hated at the time, beloved now. What do you think of Turgenev's doomed nihilist?

If I felt like the Lincoln Project ads were going to the people who actually needed to see them the most, I would feel better about them. As it is, I am a little unsettled that it seems like the people who are their prime audience are liberals which... feels like a trojan horse.
I have no problem giving disaffected republicans who can't believe that Trump ran off with their party a couch to crash on... but I am *not* going to add them to the lease.

JD Vance's abortion story about his "friend" was so incredibly slimy as to call the truth of any of it into question. He stated that her takeaway is "if I didn't have that abortion, it would have destroyed my life." He doesn't say she regreted it, he says that HE wanted her to have "other options." What other options? Abusive guys will use ANY leverage to keep abusing and a living child is perfect leverage. What the F would he propose to solve for that?!
