The majority of the time the purpose of a review is to provide an insight into the writer’s personal taste; for the reviewer to demonstrate what they like or dislike about a particular record and to help give the reader a better understanding on the reviewer’s opinions of the record and their reasoning for liking or not liking it. Here though, I’m taking a different approach. Instead of a more opinionated writing style I’m going to go down a more, for lack of a better word, analytical path (with my own personal opinions still thrown in here and there), with this review arguably being more of an essay exploring the question “why has Caramelldansen become so popular again recently?”
This might not be an original thought at all, but I think Caramelldansen’s recent resurgence in popularity is a direct result of how fucking terrible the world has been over these last few years. I’ll get into that specifically in a bit, but first, a little about the song itself.
There’s something that makes Caramelldansen distinct from most other songs to have such a high average on RYM, and that’s that it’s fun, and it doesn’t really go much beyond that. The instrumental is pretty simplistic, the structure is just that of your average pop song, and even if you could understand the Swedish lyrics they’re highly surface level without a metaphor or figure of speech in sight. To put it bluntly, Caramelldansen has almost no depth to it whatsoever. And you know what? There’s nothing wrong with that.
Don’t get me wrong, I think music that provides deep, meaningful messages and complexity is really really important, and I’d say the majority of the time that type of music is better than the type stuff like Caramelldansen is. But I think it’s easy to forget that at the end of the day there’s nothing inherently wrong that music that’s just really fun and doesn’t try to be anything deeper than that.
Another thing worth noting is that the song’s initial surge in popularity (to western audiences) in the late 2000s puts it in just the right timeframe to be nostalgic to the late millennial to early zoomer age group. That combined with the upbeat. happy-go-lucky nature of the song makes it basically the perfect young adult escapist song.
We live in one of the worst times to be a young adult in recent memories. Obviously the last couple of years have been terrible for every age demographic, but pandemic and several other factors have created a unique set of problems for young adults which could arguably give them the title of the “second lost generation” years from now. And it’s in times like this when dumb fun music like Caramelldansen is more important than ever.
Will it provide any real long-term solutions? No, of course it won’t, no song can no matter how good or fun it may be. But what it can provide is something of a distraction; a feeling that no matter how awful things may be, there’s still some fun and enjoyment in the world. Obviously if you want actual long-term solutions you have to actively work towards self-improvement, but sometimes all you want is to try and forget about your problems for a little bit. And an upbeat, nostalgic song is a great way of doing that.
Now if only Dragostea din teï could get a big revival in popularity like this has

Today I have an another machine from the horrors of bad tech support. Apparently the said tech support person can't clone a hard disk (lol) and just reinstalled Windows on the new drive. The machine was literally logged in as Administrator and whatever Windows 10 that was put on it feels like it's been tampered with. Sometimes I wonder how good most tech support people are, like I haven't daily driven Windows in 10 years but yet I know Windows more than a lot of the "tech support" people.
