I just spent about 40 minutes taking a Creative Australia/Creative Workplaces survey on pay and working conditions, workplace safety, bullying etc.
Noticeably lacking from the survey was any substantial section on mental or physical health problems resulting from the economic/political sphere of the creative industries.
Or on the implications and effects of AI on the workplace and work conditions.
We in the creative industries are increasingly outliers in the economic and political landscape here in Australia, which has serious consequences for our cultural and community development into the future.
The malady of political correctness in arts and culture is only going to get worse, too.

I came across a #Passiflora vine completely covering a large bush while out my walk late this evening. There were passionflowers in bud, in full flower and fading away amongst the green leaves of the vine.
As I in came close to take photos, I heard the rustlings of little birds already hidden in the bush in behind the vine for the night. I imagined them shifting nervously from toe toe, wondering if the large animal was going to go away and leave them to sleep.

Remember my little marigold seedlings sprouting up two days ago? Came out to find a hole there instead where a blackbird decided to scrounge around. Soil and seedlings everywhere.
Fortunately I have literally thousands of immediate replacement seeds handy to try again.

Back when I got something similar, which they just called 'migraine' to cover it, I was told to sip black coffee with a squeeze of lemon. I got nausea with my headaches, so this wasn't at all pleasant. but it actually worked.
Fortunately, I don't get migraines now. so I am not subjected to lemon-flavoured coffee anymore!

I accidentally walked out the door today without my mobile phone, then thought bugger it, I’m not going back.
It felt strangely freeing.
Ive also turned off text notifications, so I only check messages once a day now. I’m spending more time staring at the garden and unfolding Spring and less at a screen.

I have a great rice cooker. It’s called the oven 😊.
Rice in a casserole pot or pyrex dish, add water and a drop of oil, cover and cook at 180c for 30minutes. Every rice grain perfectly tender cooked, no sogginess. I cook or reheat other things like veges in the oven while the rice is cooking.
I think ovens are under-utilised in a world where everyone thinks you need a different gadget for every cooking method. The oven also acts as kitchen heater at the same time.

I had rice pudding with quince and orange syrup for dessert tonight. But the pudding is made of half and half (milk and cream) thickened with rice flour and flavoured with with cardamom and cinnamon.
It’s called Muhallabia and it’s one of the quickest, richest, smoothest, most delicious desserts you can make. Eat it with fruit or on its own with a drizzle of honey.

Geezus, it's been a week, hasn’t it?
Overdue tax frantically in, followed by heart-attack-inducing amount of tax estimate to pay, then a bunch of overly demanding students (the ones who think they are doing well missed the point, the ones who think they are doing badly are actually doing really well).
And then down to the dermatologist (who charges like a wounded bull) to find out the topical chemotherapy treatment on my scalp needs to doubled in applications, and have I lots of Panadol handy to cope? I now I have a temperature.
Thank God its Friday and I can light a fire.

I had to 'mow' my lawn/s with a whippersnipper for months when I first moved here.
Not by choice, but because the owner doesn't believe in lawns ('just let it grow wild') and can't see why I can't just use the whipper to keep the worst offenders from growing into trees and turning the backyard into a jungle. Yes, it's noise and extremely time consuming and tiring but I didn't want to get break a leg wading through the jungle and, conversely, the owner didn't want some of the tougher weeds seeding everywhere ('just use the whipper to chop off their heads').
So I stopped watering the lawns at all. And since it hasn't rained in SA for months, its no longer a problem.
Also, the neighbour's rabbit has started coming round to do his own whippersnippering.

Not a very happy day today.
First, I found out I have a skin cancer on my scalp that needs removal, and will leave a bald patch about the size of a 20c piece. The dermatologist suggested I could should consider a hair topper.
Then my brother told me he attended the funeral today of someone from his church, who turned out to be an old, old friend of mine, who I had lost touch with since 2022. She died of cancer on Saturday. She was only 48. I first met her when she was a student of mine back in 1994.
We had sometimes talked about doing an artistic collaboration together. She was a dancer, I am a painter - but it never quite happened.
Now I am sitting here watching a video she sent me three years ago of her dancing to a cellist playing - and wondering what might have been. So sad.
