I finally got around to creating an #AlmaLinux VM on macOS, using #UTM.
Alma uses slightly more memory than Debian, though memory comparisons may not particularly useful. Still plenty low enough for a running webserver with dynamic content. Like Debian, it boots quickly, maybe 2-3 seconds. Debian is a solid 2 seconds. Neither is using LVM. #Linux #arm64

Knowing the price hikes were incoming, I ordered an 15" M5 MacBook Air back in early May. It has been exceptional - speed, silent and always cool to the touch. Running a Debian VM and screen set at 60% brightness, battery usage was 4% per hour.
It really makes me irritated that Intel has exhibited "1970s General Motors" level of stagnation and laziness over the past decade. Where are ridiculously fast fanless x86 laptops on which one can install Linux?

@nprofile…gf5a Thank you for taking the time to look into this. Yes, it's a VM on my Fedora laptop that runs intermittently. It probably was offline for a month back in the late autumn. I un/re-registered it back then to enable updates again. Since then, I've tried to power the VM on every week or so, but ran into this issue again.
I'll leave it running for a few days. If that doesn't fix it I'll re-toggle the registration.
In the long run, I may transfer the VM to my 24/7 Fedora Server at home.

I can see why home lab folks turn to distributions like Alma or Rocky to fill an EL use case. I have a Red Hat Developer account and this is the third or fourth time in the past few months that I've had to mess with subscription management to start receiving package updates again on RHEL 10.
On another note, don't look past Fedora Server. I'm running it at home and as development VM on my laptop for a month. It's been awesome so far. #Linux #Fedora #EL10

A convenient short-hand for determining the origin of an airmass (at least in middle part of the US) is the dewpoint trace. As airmasses move across the continent, temperature is easily modified, while the dewpoint is comparatively more conserved. That dewpoint (white line) dip is a tracer for a polar air arriving in #Memphis this weekend. #Meteorology

Second time was a charm. On my first attempt, I apparently performed the 'pkg bootstrap -f' after the second reboot instead of before. A such I had no functional libutil.so.9 on my system.
Past that hurdle, I had a long list of packages to install. And reinstall. And reinstall. Turns out, my pkg preferences had been reset back to quarterly from latest (which I had configured in 14.x). Once I reset it back to latest, all was good.
Hopefully pkgbase improves future upgrade experiences. #FreeBSD

This bit me too after upgrading to #FreeBSD 15. Missing libutil.so.9 even after running 'pkg bootstrap -f' as recommended during the upgrade. The implications of missing libutil.so.9 : the inability to use the pkg or sudo commands. Becoming root doesn't help.
I deleted the borked FreeBSD 15.0 VM and will restore from backup and try again when I have time.

Why did I wait so long to learn how to parse JSON? Once I got the hang of the 'jq' utility (there by default in every Linux and FreeBSD instance I checked), it made parsing METAR data so much easier. Vast swaths of shell code (mostly awk and sed) to deal with HTML formatting removal or general METAR elements parsing removed.

Got the dreaded TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) warning on the way home. Pulled over to a safe spot, checked all four tires, all measuring between 33 and 34 PSI. Then I checked each one again with the same results.
Now to find out which sensor is presumably bad. Honda's TMPS doesn't tell you which one triggered the warning.

@nprofile…r70y I'll try again tomorrow to create an account on ELRepo's bug reporting system and see there's any feedback. I have RHEL 10 and CS 10 VMs on which I can test.

@nprofile…r70y I haven't tested it yet on RHEL or CentOS Stream yet.

@nprofile…r70y That's what I thought. This config worked (resulting in latest kernel-ml booting) on AlamLinux 9 and I did the same for 10, but with no luck. It booted the the oldest of the two kernel-ml that I had installed.

Solved. Per Red Hat documentation: "With GRUB_ENABLE_BLSCFG=true in /etc/default/grub, GRUB2 uses blscfg files and entries in /boot/loader instead of menuentry entries in grub.cfg. It's the standard configuration since RHEL 8."
I changed the GRUB_ENABLE_BLSFG=false and now #AlamLinux 10 boots the latest ELRepo mainline kernel. Something else to add to my notes. #Linux

I may have found an #ELRepo bug or some inconsistency in the way #EL10 handles newly-installed alternative #Linux kernels.
Specifically, a newly installed mainline kernel does not boot by default. Reinstalling kernel-ml, manually running grub2-mkconfig and rebooting still defaults to booting an old mainline kernel.
This bug report seems similar, but is for EL8. I'm running #AlmaLinux 10. I'd like to add to the bug report, but ELRepo account creation isn't working.

@nprofile…cfw2 Found the answer. By default, Fedora's #virsh connects to qemu:///session instead of qemu:///system

@nprofile…cfw2 Yeah I may try it on new install of Fedora that I have for a desktop. Not a big deal in the end. Thanks for the replies. :)

@nprofile…cfw2 I'm not familiar with nregrp. But I've been a libvirt group member on this laptop since Fedora 33 or thereabouts.
I can launch virt-manager on the desktop and manage VMs just fine. But from the terminal, virsh requires sudo.

At some point in the past 10 years, https://tootloop.com/@major 's excellent tutorial about enabling normal users to manage VMs with virsh stopped working on #Fedora. I'm wondering if the move to modularized libvirt a few years back is the reason. I think #RHEL 10 is using modularized #libvirt now as well.
Not a big deal for my purposes though, as my VM launch script already requires sudo to modify /etc/hosts

Well this is /super/ handy. This a #Debian blog post that explains how to shut down a remote #Linux server w/o being prompted for a sudo password on the remote end. I run several VMs on my laptop which are inaccessible to the outside world. This makes shutting them down via script much easier.
For #EL10 servers, substitute 'sudo' group with 'wheel' in the rules file. I tested it and it works great on #AlmaLinux 10. #TIL

A more frequent kernel update cadence than I'm used to seeing on #RHEL. But it is a x.0 release and one should probably expect things to settle down after a while. #Linux #EL10
