Friends, this should go without saying but if YOU follow a musician on social media, and they send you a music video once every 3 months, it is on YOU to know what that video is, and why they sent it to you.
Don't send a reply like that unless you wanna look like a total jackass.
Omigod, YOU FOLLOW ME. I SENT YOU A VIDEO. I AM IN IT. ARE YOU A BOILED EGG?

Siiigh. Digging through old audio resources to find things I've lost (VST's, samples, .wav banks). Coming up short on some things that are likely gone forever from the collection.

Good morning to you, especially if you survived the "holiday" in the US yesterday.
This is one of my older tracks, the visuals were created by a collaborator who was born in '83, but the title is 1980 because by golly, that's my birth year and I still think it was an auspicious year.
The track lends a determined vibe, and mildly danceable beat. Hope you enjoy, and apologies for the PSN branded bumpers. It was the format we had at the time.

Also, fwiw, an artist or creator who wants to promote should not be so disliked for sharing their work. How tha heck else are people gonna know it exists? We should be allowed to be proud of ourselves, and receive accolades (and ::gasp:: even money!) for that accomplishment.

Spent the day doing purposeful experimental recordings on a Marantz PMD-720 - we've lost the original "accident" tape that inspired the project but..
I've got almost a whole side of a 60 min cassette with bizarre captures of audio samples over wrong-speed, sometimes backward music. Some of it includes sampling from my own work.
Anybody interested in a really big .wav file (zipped) of the session?

@nprofile…fn2v headache is right. i'm transcribing MIDI and had the hardest time trying to get the right groupings to match screenshots and normally, that's the easy part.
that's before i have to try to finesse the VSTs to sound good.

2025-03-27 17:17:10 GMT

who was gonna tell me when you've got a problem in #Ableton #AbletonLive with a time signature/bpm conflict.. it is easier to put it in 2/2 than to try to sus it out in other ways?
i thought i had something in 6/4, but the grid never did match up when i was trying to transcribe it.
set Ableton to 2/2 and 1/32 grid and solved.. a lot.

Having less control over the background layers, and more control over the spoken word elements was fun. I wish it were an exact, editable thing.. I get really lost and it is hard to do all the things at once manually.

2025-03-23 03:39:15 GMT

- reply

Coming from a VST-heavy, near totally MIDI learning and creative start point, the lack of visual interface, imprecise lack of zoomable grid, etc.. that stuff scares me to not have in analog..
Today's bizarro fun: chaining cassette recorders for cassette input into recording and finding audio samples from digital sources.

@nprofile…rs2e it is uh.. not my favorite way to make sounds or music for technical reasons, but I like it very much for experimental creativity reasons.

Spent today plastic welding and doing troubleshooting recording on a TASCAM machine we worked on a while ago but came back with a new (previously unexperienced) problem of random auto-stops.
Miserable session until the problem manifested, lol. The recording cassette tape snapped off the internal wheel at one point when I tried to return to zero. Forgot safe mode was on once. A bunch of silly stuff.
I am learning to use analog tech after learning to repair it, plz be patient. Eep!

not long after i graduated they upgraded the system at the college studio to 5.1, pretty sure? i dunno. i never got to use it.
but i did always have a theory that the way i'd been able to mix (on a Playstation 4, ok?) was maybe a bit unique, and possibly the best "bang for the buck" too?

@nprofile…glz4 oh really? that's heckin awesome. my initial headphone/simple 2-speaker monitoring mixes were panned in an interesting way, spatially like in a circle that defined front and back, left and right, but also everything inbetween... so that's good to know it works on 5.1 too. i haven't heard it like that yet!

No idea how I could sit in his home office for that many years of my childhood and him still never think once that I could do anything he was doing right next to me, often with my help.
What's FUNNY to me is when he stopped using my help, he stopped being able to put things he took apart back together properly.
Somehow, he never figured out why that was. 🫠
Astounds me how few people truly know how to SEE and UNDERSTAND other people.

But it has been a really long time since I looked to that community for anything, tbh
I long ago decided my work there had been enough, and I needed to go get a more formal education to make better music
SO I DID
And someone liked what I've done enough to do that writeup
That's kind of the entire point of what I did for so long. I made something I was proud of and was seeking an audience not easy to find.
I don't understand why people can't just move past things like "oh no a notification".

their entire complaint was "she sent me music a few times and i didn't like it" - when there was always a way to say "hey, no thank you", or block me, and there was never a way for me to know they didn't like my music
The sharing mechanism wouldn't let me easily filter out "this person doesn't like this" stuff, it was on them to filter me out but no. They gotta go to Reddit and complain instead of just being polite and talking to me? WEIRD PEOPLE.

2024-03-09 15:31:04 GMT

- reply

there's this fantastic thing where people can be so hateful, but never bother to address the problem before they get so angry as to make hate-posts about you in random places you might never see
and fully, the complaints were not attached to their PSN's so how tf could i have possibly have read that and thought "oh, i should not share my music with them, wow they're so upset let me help them"
call me crazy but if i'm upset with someone, i just tell them before i get so angry?

2024-03-09 15:28:03 GMT

in this day and age, i've no idea if that writeup was by an AI or a real person
but it felt good to read
and then i found something from 5 years ago where people on Reddit were complaining that i shared my music with them and they were so annoyed they posted on Reddit but wouldn't block me or tell me they didn't like my music
all i can think is.. well.. someone liked my music an awful lot, thank you.. and if finding that one person means i have to fight 10's of haters, cool
eat my shorts

Y'all.. I've asked somebody super cool to do a video for one of my tracks. It is out of my budget right now. Would any of you like to throw some $ on it for a vote at which track I pick? Is that a thing? I don't know. LOL
I kind of want to give the artist preference on which track they do.
They're gonna do an abstract visual display, up to a minute.
If I get more $$, it will be a whole track tho....

Hello! Tomorrow is #BandcampFriday and I have two albums for you.
Lately I've described the first as "music to find reasons to live", and the second as "music to find reasons to fight".
It is sort of #ExperimentalMusic, frequently #CinematicMusic, often #DarkAmbient, and almost all inspired by #IndustrialMusic. There were collaborators on a handful of tracks, but it is all #SelfTaught #SelfplProduced.
Pass on the link, and spare time to listen? Thank you!

@npub1gzd…wfsq most of my stories are like that these days.
20 year cycle is coming round it seems. It is showing me what went RIGHT last time, and giving me back things that were lost.
Bittersweetness. With honey on top dressed with powdered sugar for luck.

Decoration plans for the retro phone...
Glow in the dark, bright red, metallic black, and silver faux studs.

I used to have a clear Conair phone with the vaporwave muted neon colors. Mostly turquoise and hot pink, with lemon yellow details. It was so cool. I painted it a little bit with puff paint to make it custom.
It was ultimately destroyed by a boyfriend with anger issues and a very unstable, cruel parent he'd been on a call with. He never replaced the things he broke like that.
Today that phone costs $225 plus shipping.

@npub1jpp…euxz Freevee, Crackle, and Tubi are all pretty good for free streaming apps.
I like Tubi and Freevee best of those options. Freevee had a surprising amount of current, popular content.
I find SO much of the pay streaming platforms is actually very, very limited in what they offer and I'm constantly disappointed by them. The free ones.. while they don't have current TV or the newest releases, they're really good for broad spectrum of what they offer, and HUGE libraries.

@npub1cre…vk7n it is so messed up how uncontrolled farms can be.. there are horses kept in the flimsiest of "pens" in front of a friend's home. They don't have water troughs that I have seen, never have hay. I don't know what they're eating but it is mostly bare ground and really tall weeds (guess the horses don't like those?)
In a single year, they've had 2 horses get out and get hit on the very narrow (blind curve too) road.
Animal services only care about dog fighting when they come look.

It's happening!!
Composed the bones of a track and a friend is recording some of the parts with real instruments, playing over what I did with VSTs.
Going off the rails seems so dangerous, lol.
Sounds like he really likes the track, too. I am glad, I have not heard his music in 20 years, and his was much less synthesizer-driven than mine.
He is kind of a luddite, tbh.

@npub1luu…l26r i hope I like it as well as drop tuning in the box. It will help me practice and work up to performing if I can get away from the computer from the get go.
The idea is to get the cello as low as possible without entering "the fart zone", lol. Deep, dark, textural drones I can get maximum expression and performance quality out of.
Will update!

@npub1hpp…cswm forming a band at 42, with so many of my peers having developed "set in their ways" bad habits or bad worldviews.. seems insurmountable but am trying.

literally the only requirement at this point is "can make music, has longstanding demonstrated respect for me"
fkn hell. i'm just not into trying to teach people to see me clearly anymore.
their sight's gone bad and that's not my problem. they can go work that out on their own. i'm no karmic optometrist.
i think i have a songwriting friend enlisted, let's see if we can get off the ground creatively. some day soon. all sense of urgency died this year and i'm just letting it float now.

i know what i can do musically, and i went to school to be able to carry not just my own weight, but the weight of polishing and publishing the product.
i know how to do more than just make sounds, and really struggled to get any kind of respect from people who positioned themselves as collaborators or helpers.
that's been the biggest struggle - but i'm going about it differently now. i've erased all thoughts of style, aesthetic, and yes.. even prestige or access.

2023-11-08 20:31:51 GMT

realized today a large part of what i've had to do for the past 2 years is try to build a band.
not being able to get it done, build the "dream team" that can get along and get shit done.. that's taken a major toll on my mental health.
revelations that come to light when one realizes "i can't form a band with this" can lead to "i also can't be friends with this".
all i needed was people who could respect me and cooperate. it wasn't that big of an ask, was it?
well.. it was.

@npub19fc…ay3c that same average churchgoing person has no idea how MANY documented variances there are in the species associated under the "homo" genus. to show them, they'd think archeological, anthropological fact some kind of trick of "the devil". wouldn't even try to think about it as anything but something to get them to stray from "the light".

you ever found yourself looking at a molded piece of plastic made for holding poop and absorbent dirt and wondered how somebody could in any good conscience charge $40 for it..
get out of that boutique pet store that put your town's last independent pet store out of business.
ugh. if it is gonna be a chain, it should at least be affordable. gaht dang.
