After a couple of years using #nixos I find that one machine after the other is running out of disk space....

Just had to switch off #grafana telemetry because it was the largest regular network traffic source in my IDS setup that uses grafana for a dash. What the hell?

The requirement for an #impressum with name and address of the operator in DE for sites that might not be considered to fall under the exemption of being for personal or family use only, seems to me to be a bit ... how can I put it ... well you know ... What do you do in view of this? Anyone actually have a solution? #reticulum #nomadnet #i2p #eepsite #mesh #yggdrasil #tor

I have listed the general public accessible ones. I have them on a different physical network (2nd internet connection) to my home family work internet line. I think there should be a FOSS mesh based monitoring CETI like tooling that harvests bad actors and reports hacks attempted to give early warning of exploits and reliable firewalls. The homelab self-hosting project has a critical weak point that security is left to those (e.g. me) on the ground who know least.

5 internet-facing devices, all declarative NixOS:
D1 (VPS): #OpenSSH, #Reticulum, #i2pd
D2: #Caddy+#Authelia, #Reticulum (rate-limited), #singbox
D3: #Reticulum, #Yggdrasil
D4: #Radicle seed + web explorer via D2's Caddy
D5: #nginx behind a #WireGuard relay + SSH-tarpit honeypot
All else (#Nextcloud, #Forgejo, #Jellyfin, #ELK, #Mumble) is overlay/LAN-only; no host exposes SSH globally.

Sure. But for me the need to detect exploits is majorly important as the services I am implementing are all FOSS in flux stuff. So I need to have a honey pot to test the waters and see what kit I am running has holes. A real headache. But interesting learning process.

2026-09-08 08:18:47 GMT

Lots of folks post that offering a web service like a web page or #Forgejo git repo results in failure due to the online attacks on the service. At the same time we are told, if not welcome at #codeberg or elsewhere, to go and host stuff ourselves as it is so easy. It isn't. One ends up in a harder scenario than if good online services were used instead. I know no-one cares about my problems but the #IDS & #firewall maintenance needed to keep internet services up is a horror. How do you do it?

Is there a playbook-like resource for getting apps newly packaged in the #nixpkgs store & helping maintainers do updates & field issues? Am making so many homebrew #NixOS overlays from #github / #nixpkgs directly using LLM fixes that this removes the need to share fixes upstream & nixpkgs loses the benefit of feedback. #LLM use risks weakening the centralised #repo culture that advances #FOSS because the vitriol against novices using LLMs to raise issues has seeded a vicious circle of avoidance.

2026-09-02 14:52:52 GMT

- reply

I am not sure that "The supply chain risk ... that mess" is fair under the circumstances. It is fair to the armies of maintainers remaining? I am not sure those few who alas stood down did all the supply chain checking. So the true change, as a result, seems unproven and seems highly unfair to allege what you do.

LOL indeed. I am performing a complete reinstall of my #nixos daily driver machine and the process failed, amongst other reasons, due to the one #radicle git pull for the build throwing a nix error as the serving seed with that URL was down. I deliberately used only one such git pull to test "in future" and here I am. I would dearly love to see a radicle git pull command in my #flake that pulls resiliently from ANY radicle seed that is up and has my repo when my seed is offline.

2026-08-22 13:34:06 GMT

Well I use flakes and codeberg but also pull code off radicle from within the flake no probs, just like one would from git e.g. https://codeberg.org/adingbatponder/reticulum_nixos_flake/src/branch/main/features/reticulum/packages/rns-map.nix

(though that specific link is down for summer... not sure how it pans out in that case... whether it fails quietly)

Tried backing up my 100Gb ssd home directory in linux onto a HP usb thumb drive #hpx206c usb a/c and about 400 files were allegedly corrupted in the rsynch copy as evidenced by same write data etc. but different check sum. Is this normal for #ssd #flashdrive #thumbdrive #dataintegrity ?

2026-08-21 15:00:03 GMT

Am trying to move my daily driver laptop over to #luks #luks2 encryption with a re-installation of nixos. I have persistence set up already and it runs on a flake. So how hard can it be to remove the state data and just re-install #nixos using its flake? Using LLM as the tooling to make bash scripts to do this... and it seems like a mega hoo-ha. Any known easy ways of doing this?

2026-08-21 13:33:15 GMT

You could start by trying #reticulum for communication ... and just opt out of this ?

Thanks. Yes. Thinking now. Nextcloud is good for offering file sharing to family ecosystem. But a simpler backup disk space on same machine is the best solution indeed. Thanks for all the input. I am learning a lot.

2026-08-20 18:44:14 GMT

So I could not just copy my /home/<username> to my #nexcloud server using the browser interface.... just to make a backup .... am I naïve or is there something I have just not understood about nexcloud ? It does not act like an attached drive e.g. usb drive... I need to go back to computer school.

2026-08-19 21:50:40 GMT

- reply

I am re-installing my nixos daily driver machine in encrypted mode as you suggest to make sure any nexcloud data that is synched down is not let on any disk in plain text. This even though there is nothing ultra secret on the nexcloud currently but it seems like otherwise the system is not sufficiently hardened for the few docs that might be sensitive.

2026-08-19 14:33:02 GMT

If you over time #synch many folders on a laptop to a large self-hosted #nextcloud instance containing valuable and/or private family data, what measures could one use to make theft of that laptop not result in all that synched data being exposed on the disk?

2026-08-17 12:25:16 GMT

I am going with ZFS directly and nextcloud over that, and heard that truenas was overly complicated or not in some versions not FOSSY enough but might be wrong.

2026-08-17 09:24:45 GMT

A question to #homelab folks using #Nextcloud : I want to make my self-hosted nextcloud instance which now holds TB of my data e.g. photos, taken from googledrive & co, as my single source of data truth... and be able to synch files and folders from a fleet of about 10 machines BUT was worried that a hack on any one machines of the fleet would expose my whole dataset. I really want one place in nextcloud for all data from all machines... but do not know how to make it secure. Any ideas? Thanks!

The most recent successful route is used. That makes sense. And the direct route is used if the indirect fails. Seems ok to me. I think for time variable connection quality this is acceptable for a simple system, unless I have misunderstood. If it is about sending data over a time period (sending time, retries) longer than the link quality fluctuations then of course that is more complicated than rns can deal with. Look forward to seeing a solution.

One nice thing about #radicle & #reticulum is that I can switch off my servers running a reticulum backbone (reticulum.me is off ; but reticulorum.net is still up on Hetzner) or radicle seed (repoducible.org is off in August as it runs on a laptop with a battery and I'd rather not leave it alone) when going in holiday or doing maintenance & not worry that you are breaking some infrastructure. They are self-healing: the same service or task will be available in/via another corner of the mesh.

Is the #codeberg ban on #LLM code related to a feared or actual liability for #copyright enfringement by code e.g. from LLMs ? Or a legal obligation to not store and share copyrighted material e.g. from LLMs? Or just a moral or democratic stance?

#Codeberg has no ability to nor interest in hosting "as much code as possible", and no-one can force them to. Ok. They also have no interest in keeping users who know their code is a good fit to their principles, but who have to leave because they cannot make codeberg part of their infrastructure if they fear a codeberger moderator or bit "does not like the amount code the repo self-labels as e.g. claude code assisted" and deletes it as threatened.

But AI crawlers are not caused by people storing code of any sort in #codeberg? It seems like a bad argument to make the repo service dubious for legit users of LLM to code who wish to make their stuff visible and shareable and even for vetting?

If repo closing by #codeberg by force happened, it would be a major practical disaster. The uncertainty alone is damaging: users should not have to worry that a subjective “purist” judgment or an unreliable automated tool might destroy their workflow. Codeberg needs to manage this risk with exceptional clarity, due process, warnings, appeals, and safeguards against irreversible deletion. I would hope a freeze phase would be first then dialogue. BTW would gladly pay to be left alone. 2/2

Yes. Like countries and democracies, every organisation has to make the decisions it believes are necessary. I respect that. My point is simply that #Codeberg has become system-critical to my work, including infrastructure built with #LLM assistance for #Nix. I now have to fear that a key part of that infrastructure could be removed without warning. 1/2

2026-07-23 09:00:22 GMT

I agree. Thanks for speaking up. There is much positive feedback about the move to bad LLM code on #codeberg. It risks strengthening liberal big tech by leaving it dominant. I use LLMs to help build tested #nixos #flakes that run my machines, yet I now worry my fleet setup processes using codeberg could be ruined by other's decisions. That is why dependence on large platforms is risky & this move has proven this. I use #radicle & #reticulum #rngit as a backup for Codeberg as it is flaky.

2026-07-19 19:44:59 GMT

Has anyone got a tip for a #nixos version of #tpotce https://github.com/telekom-security/tpotce or similar #tarpit like #honeypot #ids #ips ? How does one easily obtain a suitable #ipv4 & #ipv6 address if one rightly does not want to use one's own?

2026-07-18 19:02:30 GMT

Using #suricata #IDS and #abuseipdb with manual checks using #claudecode to identify IP addresses that are attacking my reverse proxy device. I block in #nftables the IPs that tick all three boxes:
1. suricata reports attack,
2. claude code investigates and confirms attack (and we log the CVE etc.), and
3. IP is already high confidence bad actor.
A bit slow really due to manual checking. How does one extend to #IPv6 ? What measures should one add? #portscanning

#nextcloud question: if you want to have a file repository for joint use with your partner do you share a username / account or use the teams app and each have your own account ? What are the pros and cons? I am being told teams approach has rough edges ....

#commerzbank #Mastercard had a glitch and online payments were refused at least yesterday from about 16:00 yesterday 03-07-2026 to today. Two separate vendors declined my card (#Amazon and #Kickstarter). Commerzbank knew yesterday nothing of it and could see no fault. Today one vendor accepted the card again. #creditcard #declinedcard #declinedpayment
How can a #bank not know that a card has been declined when I ask them about it? There must be records?

Indee that is what they show. But why such an odd cryptic non-obviously related error? I am a bit miffed that this problem has come up. I am not doing anything odd with #codeberg and use it as my main repo and do PRs etc daily... it has broken my project flow without warning as if I were a bot or something. I would rather pay for a service that works for me, than have to beg for attention for my show-stopping problem.

Well the PRs work if I wait. I think they have some sort of limiter where if you exceed a certain number of interactions you have to wait. The same generations pull and merge fine if I just wait.... this looks like an anti bot measure going ferral

2026-07-01 06:04:23 GMT

#codeberg no longer works for me. After two pull requests on their website I get
Network error SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected non-whitespace character after JSON data at line 3 column 1 of the JSON data
and then only after waiting e.g. overnight can I no more PRs .
I use codeberg in preference to gitgub on principle, but now I cannot use codeberg effectively any more.
Anyone know what this problem is?

nixos global update lays waste to loads of my tooling....but at least it happens when cause it to 😂 In this case firefox keeps wanting to install background processes requiring admin authorisation. That is what bothers me : someone else deciding when I have to fix stuff. I want to be to blame and chose when to crash things.

And most amazingly: #macos cannot manage #firefox NOR #MSword which fail to start after a while. Only with #claudecode could I make my #MacBookProM1 actual let me do word processing! Hilarious state of affairs because IF I HAVE TO use and LLM to make the simplest thing work in #macos then I am finally justified in using the LLM to set up a #linux machine just the way I want it and learn something in the process . Thanks #apple for making my life choices so easy !!! 2/2

Just as in #ubuntu, #firefox in #macos piles up pending updates & eventually just fails to start. This never happens under #nixos
Funnily: I first tried #nixos precisely to see if I could avoid having to kill firefox PIDs in #ubuntu to make my machine behave. 😆. Lovely to see even #macos suffers from 'not being as good as nixos' for controlling the morasse of incessant update processes flooding the OS every day & calming the pop-up storm. Hope firefox does not fix this because great nixOS advert

I think the idea of special firmware to exclude certain events / reactions per #lora #rnode might fix it.... will ponder 🤔 #reticulum #multirnode #antennaarray

Super. I use one fixed linux computer for reticulum over internet to have one ID. The ID is however encoded in my flake so I could use the same one on a different machine if the first one is off. It does lead to chaos if every reticulum messaging app creates its own ID and one is experimenting with different apps. I too have settled on meshchatx . What is relay chat?

I have learnt just now, as the manual says, reticulum over IP loses its privacy. It must use ip2. That has finally cleared up my last "why use reticulum default interface or IP transport nodes / backbones" is that breaks the un-traceable aspect.

Shocked that it has taken me so long, thanks to a heads-up from a friend & #nixos via claude code, to see that I should have set up:
(1) #ECH on my #reverseproxy serving my sites
(2) #DoT on my daily driver.
#DNS url names (web addresses) are *not* encrypted by default even on sensible operating systems!
The incessant leakage to #ISP & intermediaries of site names visited in 99.9% of cases is an egregious privacy issue I never knew of. Using #DoH is the next? All fixes thanks to #CloudFlare

Footnote to above post: The provision of a special forwarding node address as in 6. is only mentioned here because the post wanted to highlight what is needed if immediate guaranteed access is wanted akin to what happens on the normal internet. The provided forwarding node is specially provisioned 24/7 & set up 1 hop away from the repo hosting machine by the repo owner. It acts as its "reticulum ipv4 web access point". In practice the default interface should work eventually but might take time.

2026-06-07 14:23:03 GMT

Seems that, to share and/or use a #reticulum #rngit #git #repository immediately as similarly as possible to using #Codeberg / #GitHub (know of it, find it, read it, obtain it) needs 3 prerequisites:
1) know of the repository somehow e.g. from a #nomadnet #page / #webpage / tip
2) running reticulum
3) means to read nomadnet pages (e.g. #Nomadnet , #MeshchatX )
& 3 pieces of information:
4) repo address
5) repo nomadnet #URL / page address
6) #interface settings that give a sure route to 4.&5.

Then I change a setting and it shows a completely different name again.. this is so crazy. #Protonmail is bust.

2026-06-06 19:26:55 GMT

What? #protonmail is out of the blue showing my actual name in the web GUI next to the #email address that uses a #pseudonym , & shows it with a lock symbol and when hovering over it it says "Stored with zero access encryption". What the hell is going on #proton ? #zeroaccessencryption There was no warning of this. What if I opened the email in a screen share or screen grab ontext where I did not expect that to be shown that way? This is ridiculous, annoying and when & why was this introduced?

Thanks. Yes, it should ALL be upstream derivations but the hate campaign against AI generated PRs is so bad I do not do it & make it all local. The flake uses 'parts' so you can pull in just the part/s you want: very handy so you do not need the whole flake & can test before maybe importing/harvesting the nix code The readme is not up to date, sorry. As you can see from the number of commits, even with Claude Code doing the heavy lifting, it is a very long term project to make my #flake.

Sounds great. At one part after prerequisites 4. you say
At this point, you’ll have a repository seeded by your local node
then later for the garden part step 4:
Your repository will now be seeded.
Just wanted to mention that these passages in isolation are confusing to someone starting new. The meaning and flavours of seeding and seed nodes is probably not ultra clear in the write-up. I have associated the term seeding with seed node, which the local device hosting the repo is not?
